Zoom, Zoom, Boom, Boom… The 'Battleship' Trailer Explodes Online
There's something in the water
The trailer for Battleship played in front of my screening of Cowboys and Aliens last night and I have to tell you, it is one hell of a nonsensical party of noise and reused concepts. You see, there's this screw-up of a Naval officer, and he's in love with the captain's daughter and there's a mysterious thing in the ocean, and zoom, zoom, zoom… which weapons should we fire? "All of them." Ugh.
Comparisons to Battle: Los Angeles and Transformers are bound to be made so have at it. Watch the trailer (via CinemaTeaser) and let me know what you think. Battleship hits theaters on May 18, 2012.
You can also check out the teaser poster and first image released from the film right here.
Peter Berg ("Hancock") produces and directs "Battleship," an epic action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Based on Hasbro's classic naval combat game, "Battleship" stars Taylor Kitsch as Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam, a physical therapist and Hopper's fiancée; Alexander Skarsgård as Hopper's older brother, Commanding Officer Stone of the USS Samson; Rihanna as Lt. Raikes, Hopper's crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone's superior (and Sam's father), Admiral Shane.
Berg directs this epic action-adventure also produced by Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir of Hasbro (the "Transformers" franchise), along with Scott Stuber ("Couples Retreat"), Sarah Aubrey ("The Kingdom") and Duncan Henderson ("Master and Commander").

Somebody shoot me…
Transformers 4 already?
Anyway, it looks entertaining to me so I may give it a chance.
Thanks for the trailer.
And transformers throws the pass, battleship catches it, and the walmart crowd goes wild!
Biggest movie of 2012!
It's lacking… well everything. I don't see why they had to involve aliens in this movie… It makes it too closely related to Transformers/Battle LA just like you said Brad. I'm fairly certain there are other ways to tell a story without using aliens. I will proabably end up seeing this, but I hope its not til its on DVD.
At least it looks like it will have the visuals.
But yeah, we better get the 'cliche' checklist out because this flick is gonna be loaded with them.
I sense a great comedy in the making.
That's just the way I remember playing the game as a kid. You know, if they wanted to capture the nostalgia factor and make me remember the game I played as a kid, all they had to do was have the villain be the main character's younger brother who cheats the entire movie.
At first I was thinking that this is only a teaser that doesn't show us a whole lot so people should at least give it a chance. But yeah, there's no way this is gonna be good.
Dear lord this looks horrible… They're going to flesh out a feature film based on this ridiculous concept? Why Liam? WHY?!?!
I can't imagine what they'll do to Candyland
Everything looks sloppy and messily put together. Aside from the visuals….it looks like a piece of crap. I'll end up seeing it but I'm not looking forward to it.
You nailed it Brad; "Ugh".
And I would like to add an extra "Ugh" for The Change Up trailer that was the 'sponsor message'.
I can see why they ran this in front of "Cowboys & Aliens" because this looks to be the sequel: "Naval Officers $ Aliens". Hopefully the third installment includes ninjas.
But really, there was potential here to make a killer submarine/battleship film here ala U-571 but on a grander scale. Instead it looks like they've made a piece of crap with a title that screams of desperate brand recognition that will guarantee a big summer opening weekend. Hopefully we can look forward to Liam Neeson in another summer 2012 tentpole.
When will your review for Cowboys and aliens be up.
Hahahaha!
Im really shocked by this crap! I'm trying to convince myself that a great director like Berg wouldn't dare take the Mike Bay course in sci-fi film making academy. At least when he did Hancock Smith was a seasoned actor by then, who in the hell told Rihanna she could act?! And for someone who on a consistant basis choose to have as little clothing as possible, for her to play someone in the military is mockery, now i'm one of the fellas but she just bores the hell outta me!
I am with MWHOLLYWOOD85 100% in that Berg could have created one helluva epic using actual military weaponry!
He could have had a battle between another country or even do The Rock thing and have one side of the American military go against a rogue American military fleet! WTH Berg?!
Looks like Michael Bay directed it…which is to say, it looks like utter dog shit. At least with it opening before school lets out it shouldn't be as big as the Transformers shitfests.
As good as 2012 is looking, the summer kickoff films are looking pretty bad. The Avengers, Battleship, Men in Black…not exactly the most exciting lineup. Looks like it won't be until Prometheus on June 8 that we'll get something interesting.
The Avengers is going to make an obscene amount of money if this is the biggest competition in early May.
And at the end of the day, box office results tend to indicate that the wider public rather likes 'bad' movies (or shitfests, in the vernacular) which is why more of them end up getting made, in fact.
It's one of those vicious and apparently unbreakable circles.
The Avengers at least has a built in audience working in it's favour, but MIB 3 is coming ten years after a badly recieved sequel and no-on is really taking the Battleship trailer seriously so far either.
So yeah………box-office wise, The Avengers seems the best bet to be the most successful at this early point.
Wait for the connect 4 movie where the opposite player is an alien with 4 arms!
I don't remember aliens being involved in the board game… maybe I missed out on that edition.
Looks like a Transformers ripoff.
I can't believe no one has said this yet, but: Armageddon meets Transformers.
What the hell??!! Looks like a waste of $250M. Damn, that's a big budget!
At least, Berg could afford a tripod this time around.
