'Zatoichi', 'Red 2', Breaking Bad: Final Season and Black Friday Deals On DVD and Blu-ray This Week

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: November 26, 2013

Remember, it's Black Friday deals week at Amazon right now and I have a full rundown of deals galore right here and while you're looking for deals, Barnes & Noble is still having their 50% off Criterion titles through the end of the month. Take a look at that sale right here, but before you head out check out this week's new titles directly below. There may be a few that catch your eye.

Breaking Bad: Final Season & Complete Series
Breaking Bad: Final Season & Complete Series
With the final season of "Breaking Bad" finally on DVD and Blu-ray perhaps now Netflix will have those final eight episodes available for streaming and I can finish the series. I must say, however, if I was as die hard a fan of this series as some people seem to be, the complete collection is an impressive little curio, at least as far as DVD and Blu-ray sets are concerned. My only worry would be the barrel packaging is most likely plastic and cheaply made, at which point is it really worth it? At least it doesn't appear it would take up too much space, which is always a bonus.

Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman (Criterion Collection)
Speaking of impressive, now this is an objet d'art as Criterion delivers what I perceive to be one of the ultimate must haves of the year when it comes to DVD and Blu-ray releases and at this exact moment, clicking the button below is not the way to go. Until the end of the month, this set is only $112.49 at Barnes & Noble, which is $87 cheaper than Amazon right now and we are talking about a 25-film set. Question is, will you pull the trigger?

If you'd like a taste of what you're in for, many of the films included are available on Criterion's Hulu Plus page, just click here for a free trial.

The Canyons
The Canyons on DVD Blu-ray today
I haven't seen this and I really have no desire to outside of a minor curiosity. There are far too many classic films I haven't seen for me to waste time on this one.

The Grandmaster
The Grandmaster on DVD Blu-ray today
I've had a screener of The Grandmaster for some time, but have still not yet checked it out, though I hope to over the holidays. Obviously, being a Kar Wai Wong film, it looks visually amazing, but how does the narrative hold up? I haven't heard a lot of great buzz, but I still need to give it a chance.

Getaway on DVD Blu-ray today
I gave this one a chance and my "D-" review lets you in on how that turned out.

Red 2
Red 2 on DVD Blu-ray today
Red 2 was far more entertaining than it deserved to be (read my review here). This doesn't mean you should buy it, but I think it's definitely worth a rental.

Buy Red 2

I have a copy of this, but I'm just not sure I can muster up enough interest to actually watch it.

I bought that Breaking Bad barrel. It's awesome. The special features could keep me busy for weeks.

I watched the first two Zatoichi films on Hulu and really liked what I saw. Definitely plan to pick it up one day. Probably not right now even though it's 50% at B&N.Going to save up for it for a later time.

I'll probably check out Red 2 and Jobs. That's about it, though.

Sure the Breaking Bad barrel set looks cool and all, but for the number of episodes in the show and the low amount of special features with the set, the original price of $300 is just wayyyy too much. Even with $100 off on Amazon right, it's very expensive for the mount of content you get. I know most of the cost is coming for the design of the box-set itself but come on, it's not THAT expensive to make it. I really like the show and want to own the complete series but it's way out of my price range right now.

Granted I just received the set last night, and I haven't bought many other boxsets for point of comparison, but how many special features were you expecting? It seems to me like it has a ton.

Ok looking into it seems like it does have quite a bit of features but there is still no reason to have it priced at 300. I would say about 229 would be more reasonable.

Jobs: Is quite awful, watchable, but awful. D+
Red 2: I was interested after your review Brad, but... C-/C
The Grandmaster: Visually beautiful, but a narrative mess. C+

Getaway and The Canyons look like crap, so I guess it isn't a great week for movies at home.

Now , that Breaking Bad barrel, I would kill to have that.

If you like Dexter at all you should check out the box set for it. It's his blood slide case from the show. I thought it was pretty awesome myself

I'll rent Red 2 and Jobs and maybe Getaway eventually but that all I'm interested in.

I'm way too excited about the Criterion release of Fantastic Mr. Fox.

I'm going to try to watch some Zatoichi films before the sale ends, and then decide if the box set is worth buying or not.
