YOU VOTE: Road to Oscar Noms – The Supporting Categories
It's time we heard from you...
Since September 1, 2008 I have been tracking this year's crop of Oscar contenders in "The Contenders" section, and since that time many people have followed along, added their opinions and we have managed to have some great discussions about last year's films and performances. On Wednesday I will be publishing my last list of Oscar nomination predictions before the nominees are announced on Thursday, January 22 and until that time I felt we should take a final look — together — at the acting, directing and picture categories and get your opinion on just who you think will be nominated in each category.
Today we begin with Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress and over the next couple of days we will look at Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Picture, each time allowing you to vote on who you think (not who you want) will be nominated for each category. RopeofSilicon users didn't do too bad predicting the Golden Globe winners getting 10 out of 14 correct, I can only assume you will be just as good at predicting the Oscars.
My first predictions, posted on November 20, looked like this for the Supporting Categories:
| Supporting Actor | Supporting Actress |
|
|
My most recent predictions look like this:
| Supporting Actor | Supporting Actress |
|
|
There hasn't been a whole lot of movement in either category with only three new names added to the two lists in total. Of the names included on the lists above I believe only Eddie Marson (Happy-Go-Lucky) and Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) stand a chance at actually getting an Oscar nomination even though Tom Cruise (Tropic Thunder) and Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess) were nominated for Golden Globes. I think many will agree with me when I say Crusie stands no chance at an Oscar nom and if Fiennes were to be considered for any of his 2008 performances it would be as a supporting actor in In Bruges. Therefore I think we have our list of possible nominees and it is up to us to figure out who the final five will be.
Now… It's your turn…

I chose other for supporting actor because I think Ralph Fiennes will get a nomination for The Reader.
I chose OTHER twice for supporting actor. I agree with Scott in that Ralph Fiennes will be nominated for The Reader instead of The Duchess. Also, call me crazy, but I wouldn't count out James Franco as a strong contender for his work in MILK.
I chose for the last James Franco for Milk. He used quite a subtle energy his performance.
I chose "other" twice for supporting actor, brad pitt and russell crowe
My nominations would be
# Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)
# Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt)
#Josh Brolin (Milk)
#Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess)
#Any one of the child actors in Slumdog millionaire (well the academy always has a child actor in its nominations, maybe this time too since the field is wide open )
In my opinion Beyonce Knowles gave an Oscar worthy performance as Etta James in Cadillac Records. Truly Excellent!
My nominations for Best Supporting actor would be:
# Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)
# Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt)
#Josh Brolin (Milk)
#Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess)
#Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder)
My nominations for Best Supporting Actress would be:
Kate Winslet (The Reader)
Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona)
Beyonce Knowles (Cadillac Records)
Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler)
Viola Davis (Doubt)
Evan Rachel Wood should be nominated for The Wrestler
Debra Winger should be nominated for Rachel Getting Married!!! Sooo good!!!
Debra Winger – Rachel Getting Married. Not much time on screen, but her performance was fierce. She still has "it".
Heath Ledger should and will win best supporting actor. Phillip Seymor Hoffmann was also incredible. I don't know who Dev Patel was supporting, but he was also good.
I can guarantee that if heath ledger hadn't done the joker, Michael Shannon would be winning that Oscar for his spectacular performance in Revolutionary Road. Hands down. And please, get your tropic thunder oscar noms out of here. Lets be realistic for a moment. Robert Downey gave a hilarious performance in that movie, but oscar worthy?! Give me a damn break people!
how could you still perpetrate the fraud that winslet is supporting in "the reader"? how can the other actresses more deserving to be in that slot have any fair chance at all?
Think Dev Patel will make the cut in the supporting actor category.
Dev Patel will get a supporting actor nod.
