Yesterday I opened up the user voting asking for your predictions as to who would earn Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress and today we continue as I now ask for your votes for Best Actor and Best Actress in this post and your opinion on Best Director in this post. Tomorrow will open up the voting booths for frenzied voting on Best Picture.

First, before you vote I thought I would run down the predictions I have been making, which started back on November 20 and I was surprised to see things haven't changed all that much outside of a couple of names. My first predictions, posted on November 20, looked like this for the Lead Actor and Actress Categories:

ActorActress
  1. Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)
  2. Sean Penn (Milk)
  3. Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon)
  4. Richard Jenkins (The Visitor)
  5. Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino)
  1. Meryl Streep (Doubt)
  2. Kristin Scott Thomas (I've Loved You So Long)
  3. Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married)
  4. Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road)
  5. Angelina Jolie (Changeling)

My most recent predictions look like this:

Supporting ActorSupporting Actress
  1. Sean Penn (Milk)
  2. Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)
  3. Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino)
  4. Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon)
  5. Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)
  1. Meryl Streep (Doubt)
  2. Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married)
  3. Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road)
  4. Kristin Scott Thomas (I've Loved You So Long)
  5. Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky)

For those that have been following along you know I have had a hard time with the Actor list in terms of where do Leonardo DiCaprio (Revolutionary Road) and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) fall? Both have been in my top five at some point over the last couple of months and once my final predictions are released on Wednesday they both may find their way back in.

When it comes to the Actress category things don't get any easier as names such as Angelina Jolie (Changeling) and Melissa Leo (Frozen River) continue to hover around those final spots as Streep, Hathaway and Winslet seem to be the locks.

Now remember, this voting isn't about who will win or even who you want to win or even be nominated. This is about who you THINK will be nominated. Sorry, what you want has no weight here. So, with my opinion out of the way, it's your turn… Have at it…

I think you are forgetting Kate Winslet in "THE READER".

  2. Brad Brevet (Post Author)

@Hashim Ali: Not forgetting, Weinstein is pushing her for Supporting and you will find her in that voting right here.

Sure, Academy members could still vote her into Lead Actress, but my bet is that not enough of them will to make much of a difference.

  3. alluhrey

suppose kate winslet gets enough and EQUAL votes for her to be nominated under lead actress for both "revolutionary road" and "the reader", which one shall be officially declared for nomination? i know that double nominations are prohibited, but what if?

shall they convert the votes for lead into votes for supporting? i am very concerned because this category fraud can actually lead to that possibility…

  4. Dan Tralder

    My "other" is Andrew Garfield

  5. John Debono

I known this won't happen but how great would it be a Christian Bale finally got an oscar nomination for TDK? Say what you will about the voice (Which I actually thought was better then him using his normal voice as Batman) but his with the exception of Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn, Bale was as great if not better then most of the performances on the list. Plus I think its safe to say he was unfairly used as a scapegoat for people who were looking for something to complain about. Oh well at least we have Public Enemies next year to get him a nomination.

@John Debono: I liked the scary voice! If Batman spoke like Bruce Wayne voice everyone would have moaned about it in the same way as they do about "investigative reporter" Lois Lane not guessing who Clark Kent really is!

And Bale was ace, but then Gary Oldman's never got a nom either – you have to be good in an "Oscar movie", rather than simply good, unfortunately…

Am I the ONLY one who thinks Heath Ledger's performance warrants a Best "Actor" nomination instead of merely a "Supporting" one? I mean, I'm so happy that Mickey Rourke is finally getting love and respect from the Academy – it's been a rough couple of decades; however, Ledger's performance was simply the best of 2008.

For me, the performances which moved me the most in 2008 are as follows:

    1. Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight
    2. Mickey Rourke – The Wrestler
    3. Clint Eastwood – Gran Torino
    4. Leonardo DiCaprio – Revolutionary Road
    5. Sean Penn – Milk

  9. Meryl, Kate, Anne, Kristen and Sally

Mickey, Sean, Clint, Frank and Brad

@Hashim Ali: Kate winslet in the reader didnt get forgotten, thats supporting not lead. I hope she wins for that and Meryl gets it for lead! <3!

  11. Scott

Colin Farrell for In Bruges would be like God coming down from on high and kissing me on the forehead. I really hope he gets this nomination, however unlikely.

  12. Kamila

    Meryl best actress ever !!

  13. Andrew

hope Meryl wins Leading and Kate supporting. They both deserve it.

  14. Dan Tralder

Meryl Streep best actress ever? Maybe.

But this time, she def doesn't deserve a win, only a nomination. I though Anne, Kate (in rev road) and Kristin Scott Thomas were all better than Streep this year.

  15. alluhrey

    @Dan Tralder:

i thought kate winslet in revolutionary road was boring…she's done that same performance in "little children". i felt she reduced her character into a selfish, self-absorbed woman and i didn't recognize april wheeler from the book the way winslet played her. it lacked intelligence.

meryl streep on the other hand showed the contradictions of sister aloysius excellently —acts stern but has capacity for tenderness, rigid but curious, shows certainty but is in fact waracked by doubts…it was a riveting character performance and she was fascinating in every turn.

  16. Hashim Ali

    @alluhrey:
I'll have to disagree about Kate though. I thought her Rev. road performance was different and better than her's in lil children…I do hope that she wins AND gets nominated for The Reader….she was fantastic in that!

    @alluhrey:
and I hope that doesn't happen. I'll be more happier if she gets a nod for both performances…one in supporting role and the other in lead…and am hoping that she'll at last win a much deserving oscar….

sorry if I sound too madly obssesed with Kate Winslet but I really really want her to win…she deserves it…

  17. Marta

Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)- best actor
Meryl Streep (Doubt) – best actress
Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt)-best supporting actor
Amy Adams (Doubt)- best supporting actress

  18. Maria

meryl is soooo awesome and totally deserves to win an oscar! she has been nominated so many times and has been turned down way too many. she deserves wins! i hope meryl wins for best actress and kate wins for best supporting actress!
