Would You Rather Universal Make a Third Riddick Film or 'Serenity 2'?

A couple sci-fi franchises hang in the balance and I make you the judge

Last night I watched the Blu-ray releases of Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick and got to thinking about that third Riddick film Vin Diesel recently suggested to Gamespot when he said, "Maybe we're too tight-lipped about the next Chronicles of Riddick film, and I think circa the release of [Dark Athena] that's probably when you'll start hearing more about the next Riddick film," the actor said. "It is underway and I almost think it's a coincidence that we haven't heard anything, that there hasn't been a lot of public stuff on the Riddick movie."

The Dark Athena Diesel refers to is the recently released videogame The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, which hit stores this past Tuesday forwarding the story of Richard B. Riddick beyond the 2004 animated Riddick feature Escape from Butcher Bay. Considering this is the second videogame in the character's lifespan since Pitch Black in 2000 there is obviously a fanbase, but they either aren't as vocal as the Serenity fanbase or I just don't travel in the same circles, as it seems strange to me there is so much attention on Riddick and so little on the world of Serenity.

While Pitch Black was a success in 2000 bringing in a worldwide box-office total of $53 million on a $23 million budget, the sequel hardly topped its $105 million budget in worldwide sales hitting $115 million. In the States, The Chronicles of Riddick was a severe flop earning only $57 million.

Of course, Serenity has nothing at all to hang its hat on in terms of box-office success since it cost an estimated $39 million to make and only managed $38.8 million at the worldwide box-office. However, word has hit home video sales were through the roof. I remember when HD DVD first came out Universal even used Serenity as one of the free debut titles as an added incentive, they must have had some reason for doing so. Universal even upped the amount of interactive features once they made the switch to Blu-ray.

However, when it comes to sci-fi franchises Universal, to this point, has backed Riddick and while there is no official third film in the future and there is no telling if Universal will even be the studio to release a third Riddick, it seems the Riddick franchise is rolling with far more steam than Serenity. That is, if Universal doesn't try and do something with "Battlestar Galactica" beyond its presence on the small screen.

Since Serenity's 2005 release talks of a sequel sprout up anytime one of the cast members of the original film is interviewed. I am not sure if movie websites jump to make these stories seem larger than they are because they attract visitors or even how big the attracted audience is, but if you put the scent out there it certainly draws attention.

After watching both Riddick films on Blu-ray it is easy to see Universal has these things primed for a franchise with timelines and extensive Blu-ray features exploring the universe the two films establish, but this isn't to say the Serenity Blu-ray is much different as it contains similar features.

Then there is always the recognition factor. After Fast and Furious stormed to $70.9 million on opening weekend there is no denying audiences are wholly familiar with Vin Diesel and in casting a third Riddick feature they could go for an even bigger name as his foe. With Serenity the biggest name at the head of the snake is Nathan Fillion and the franchise creator Joss Whedon. (Summer Glau has made a minor ripple with her role on the "Terminator" TV series, but not enough to make any real waves.) These names are familiar to fans of the franchise, genre and online followers, but when it comes to the general public I don't think the reach goes much further.

Does any of this mean much at all? To be honest I don't really think so, but I am still curious what most readers would be interested in seeing if given a choice.

Personally I have a very hard time deciding. I really enjoyed Pitch Black and Riddick actually doesn't bother me much at all, but there is no denying it could have been better. I also think a third Riddick film benefits from what was attempted in the second film. Pitch Black was a rather small and intimate film while Chronicles of Riddick expanded the possibilities and story and sort of lost itself along the way. Now, however, the universe is established and writer/director David Twohy would be able to roam inside of it without having to waste much story on getting the audience acquainted.

As for Serenity the establishing has already been done and was pretty much taken care of in the first 5-10 minutes of the film. Speaking as someone that never even saw a single episode of "Firefly," the TV series the film was based on, I was familiar with what was going on in a matter of minutes — credit to writer/director Joss Whedon for that achievement. Also with Serenity I haven't heard from anyone that actually didn't like the movie. Sure, there are those that don't like it as much as others, but Serenity has a whopping 81% rating at RottenTomatoes compared to Riddick's 30% and if home video reports are accurate I would think the Serenity audience has only grown since its disappointing theatrical run.

These are certainly all things to consider, but I wonder, where do you stand? Vote now and if you have any comments on the matter please pass them on in the comment section below.

Serenity seems more open for a sequal. Riddink basically became master of the universe at the end of Chronicles so their options would probably have a prequel at the top of the list.
Serenity also simply appealed more to me than Riddick. I enjoyed both but Serenity is more my thing.
    I like Whedon's imagination.

  2. Sarah Harries

It's always shocked me how tv and film companies have so little faith in Joss Whedon. Whilst, granted, viewing figures
for his shows have never set the world alight, he is one of the geek worlds cultural icons – doubt there's many a home without a whedon boxset in situ somewhere. Surely the potential for dvd/merch etc on his creations should always have a bearing on how his shows should be treated?
Actually think, as with how the Star Trek franchise kicked off, someone should have the vision to give him the money to do another series of Firefly.. there's a lot more fans out there now…. it would be very interesting to see how that would be received.

  3. Pitch Black was certainly a movie for the ages, but the Riddick franchise has certainly never regained that original film's glory. When Vin's character was a simply a mysterious badass, he was awesome. As we discovered he was the last survivor of a mysterious, spiritual race of superbeings that fought universal evil or somesuch, I wept at the lameness of it all.

I'd only be weeping for joy if Joss were able to bring us back to the world of the Browncoats.

  4. Kathmonkey

I loved Pitch Black, but I loved Serenity 10 times more. The fact that I already had the experience of the Firefly series beforehand certainly helped that, but the simple fact is, there is so much (so much!) more of the Firefly/Serenity story to be told, far more scope in the stories of nine (ok, seven now) individuals than just one beefy meathead, even if he CAN see in the dark. I haven't seen the Chronicles of Riddick, so I can't pass judgement on it, but what I can say is that both Serenity and Firefly got me far more emotionally involved than Pitch Black. I know and like all of the characters and I have a burning desire to know what happens to them next.

How many of you can say the same about Riddick?

  5. This is really even a question?? Serenity 2. Hands down.

Yes, Pitch Black was a good flick, maybe even a great one. Small cast, lots of scares, cool story. But Chronicles was abyssmal. Sloppy storyline, bad pacing, worse acting. Ugh.

Serenity was a brilliant epilogue to an under-promoted series that died way before its time. I wonder though what stories worth telling there are about the verse, and if Whedon is interested in telling them, what with all that doll playing he's doing these days.

  6. I am personally all for a Riddick3 as seen from Chronicles; the grandeur and cinematic-scope of the franchise could possibly offer viewers a visual feast. (Disclaimer: I want to be entertained, and wildly. Introspective movies have their time and place, IMHO).

I've not had the opportunity to watch a single episode of Firefly but I lurve the movie to effin' bits – and would rather Serenity return as a series on television, than a whambam-thankyoumam flick. Season Two, Season Three and on and on.

In short – a one-night thrill from Riddick, a longer relationship / enjoyment of Serenity – would suit me just fine, IMHO :)

  7. Able

serinity please. one for the brown coats!

  8. bryce

i hated the riddick films. I would rather the serenity sequel.

  9. Chris

I don't know where you go from Riddick. The movie made little sense, but unless everything we learned in it is wrong, he basically became the master of the universe. What do you do from that point forward that isn't insanely boring? And since they explained the time between first film and that one in a way that doesn't allow for anything to really happen in the middle, where do you go?

Serenity offers more possibility of what you could do with it. I don't see either getting made, but I don't know what/how you could do anything with Riddick now that would make any sort of sense. Even the video games don't attach to the guidelines of the films.. it would be a total reboot, and if you're going to do that, no Vin Diesel, which means why bother?

  10. Hayder Munjy

    Obviously we'll get both :-D

  11. Anarchangel

    Yeah, I'd like both please.

  12. EL FRANCO

I really want to see a Serenity 2 more than anything.

What really gets to me is this, why is nobody trying the straight to DVD market with Serenity?

Stargate is doing very well with their Stargate DVD movies and there also making a Stargate Atlantis straight to DVD movie as well.

Why can't they do it for Serenity?

I'm guessing it has to do with the license is in the grubby little hands of Fox or something.

  13. brian

The fact that a Vin Diesel film should even be mentioned in the same breath, let alone being put up to a vote against Serenity, or any Whedon project just shows how messed up Hollywood is. The fact that we don't have anything from the Firefly/Serenity verse to watch makes me sad.
Serenity all the way. Hollywood, are you reading this?

  14. Robin

Personally, I'd love to see a sequel to Serenity.

Another film in the Riddick franchise is probably more feasible at this point, though, since they'd only have to secure one actor who only does movies (Diesel) as opposed to nine, three of whom are currently series regulars on TV shows.

  15. mystikcelt

I agree with Toysrevil. Bring Serenity back as Firefly on TV, because I am too much in love with the characters to only have them for another 2 hours before they're gone once more. Loved the movie, but if I had my way I'd rather see them an hour a week on TV so Joss and cast can work all their magic into weaving all the disparate elements of their wonderful universe together in the episodic format that allows Joss to do what he does best, tell tales. Also, we'd get our musical Joss episode that way ;P

As for Riddick, I loved Chronicles, it opened the universe up for some truyl epic storytelling, and whatever flaws it had, it was a great "setup" for wherever they wanna go next. The franchise is primed for two hour epic stories.

  16. RedsAttic

    Give me "Jane" any day—

  17. RiverReynolds

Another Serenity PLEASE……….. I was never a fan when the show was on TV but after I saw the movie I was HOOKED I actually just bought Firefly on DVD the other day……I would probably go see a Serenity movie at least twice in theaters; not to meantion the fact that I woulh have to buy it ASAP once it was released on DVD. Honestly, I wouldn't even bother seeing another Riddick film.

  18. DarkKnightFAN12

    Third Riddick film. Hands down.

  19. Scott Dickinson

Serenity 2…then get Firefly BACK on TV. That's never been done(don't count Star Trek because they used different crews).
Ensemble casts are tricky in movies,as fans to the dvd/blurays will see in the edited scenes just in this movie alone. Those scenes which were chopped? Well, they'd make the tv screen eventuallly, and the story would be all the better for it.
I've consumed LARGE amounts of Sci-Fi and Sci-fantasy in books, comics, movies and tv over my 42 years. I used to check out old, worn and browning copies of Star Log from my public library because I loved the short stories within(pause here, the pressure-suits used in Serenity when the crew reach Miranda have an eerie resemblence to one of those magazine's ancient covers. An homage?)
I feel Battle Star's success has been 'nice',not going to mention Star Gate as it ruined the original movie's premise years ago,Star Trek has been dead to me since the Next Generation,so to put this as bluntly as I possibly can:NOTHING TOUCHES FIREFLY or SERENITY.'"..in a lot of ways,it's the first GOOD science fiction series..""-Orson Scott Card,Ender Game.
I could go on forever, but my dinner is burning on the grill.

  20. Ray

Serenity please never knew of the show firefly till about 6 months ago probably then recently saw serenity have watched it on blu ray about 6 or 7 times now and most episodes of firefly i have seen at this point i want to buy everything firefly/serenity i can get now, cant believe fox screwed them over one of the best shows ive seen. Also Summer is great on Terminator:TSCC she should have won major awards by now but wont since she is in the sci fi genre.

  21. aweandrew

RIDDICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!! Pitch Black is one of my all time sci-fi films EVER!!! Briliant! I love Chronicles too, and I felt left hanging…I WANT MORE RIDDICK!!!!!!!!!

  22. Catherine

Oh, please, give us Serenity 2!!!!

Riddick has been done, it's time to give the Browncoats another chance in the spotlight!!

We want some intelligence back in movies, not just mindless killing like Reavers.

  23. Jon

Sequel to Serenity all the way. These characters are too great to not see again. The action, sets, pacing, dialogue and acting. . . all are above great. Let's bring Serenity back to the big screen and advance the story. "Blue Sun" was introduced, let's see what they are about. Plus the "Hands of Blue" guys that never got a resolution. And actually bringing down the academy River was kept in, or having people from that place hunting her. Shepherd Book's back-story. . . so many things you could make into a movie! If Serenity is brought back to the screen and advertised right, plus given a bigger named actor playing the villain (I love Chiwetel, but he doesn't have the pull some others do) it would be an easy success.

Don't take the sky away from us. . . Bring the crew back!

  24. mostyharmless

Both, if it was a choice Serenity 2.

  25. JD92

If they could make a decent Riddick film id rather see that probly.

  26. tscc1000

If I have to choose, I clearly vote for Serenity II, as I did in the poll above.
But I wouldn't be sad at all, if it worked out for both of them.

  27. Philippa

'Serenity' has a guaranteed ready made huge, international fan base who would rally even more behinds on seats if there was a second film. The money Universal could make in promotional tie in material, future DVD sales and merchandise would far outstrip anything a Riddick film could bring in. Heck, give Vin a role in Serenity 2 and you're sorted!

  28. Earthenergy

I love them both. Skip Star Wars so that there is much more space for both.
The story of Firefly has come to an end with serenity. The story of Riddick is only introduces to us.The journey of Riddick must still be made.
A lot of questions are still not answerd. I loved the soundtrack. I was there, right next to him in the movie running against the sunrise. Great Scenes, great sounds.
Serenity has the humor I loved it very much. I loved the bunch. I still hope that Mal and Inara will be someday together.
The actors are now involved with other projects it shall be hardtime to bring them together for another one or more seasons

  29. NightShadeMary

Pitch Black was a great movie and should have been left alone; a concept wasted on Hollywood. A third installment isn't going to help an uneven franchise.

I would choose a new Serenity/Firefly movie but I agree with Mistkcelt, please oh please bring it back to TV. The characters created by Joss seem to personify the voices in my head so well; watching it was like therapy!

If I can only have a sequel film I will take it. Since this is pipe dreaming anyway, I would want the story wound back so that some of the crew "departures" in the Serenity movie could be reversed.

  30. Scott Dickinson

@Earthenergy: I'll beg to differ from your view that Serenity's story ended. I'm assuming you are refering to several cast members' demise ending any continuity. To that I say,"Umm..Sci-Fi here!" Am I suggesting a resurrection scene straight out of Search for Spock? No. I think that was artfully done and the science behind it was satisfying, but not necessarily something you want to copy.I just think there are always possibilities when you deal in this genre. I mean, you do have a psychic on,the movie (Serenity) showed technology that allowed seemingly dead people to speak(Mr. Universe's Love-Bot) so there are things in place that 'could' bring characters back and even if that arena isn't explored the key, central figure to this franchise(I can dream it's a franchise)is still alive:Mal.

  31. Aj

Im for serenity 2 and no for
    riddick 3

  32. Chritsina

    Oh come ON!

    Serenity for the win!

  33. bege

Absolutely agree that it would be better to bring back Firefly as a TV series, but, and maybe I'm a pessimist, but I just don't think that either a movie or more TV episodes is ever going to happen. The fan base has been talking about this for years now, and it has been frustration every step of the way.

It just doesn't seem to be in the cards, alas. I would love to be wrong, but I'm tired of all the speculation with no real hope of anything actually happening …

  34. Chris

Serenity 2 because there is so much more to tell and I would be thrilled to see what this exceptional cast would do next. One of the extraordinary elements of Firefly/Serenity was how quickly they all gelled together. Normally this seems to take a whole season but they all clicked instantly.

With Christina Hendricks in Mad Man, Summer Glau in Terminator and Adam Baldwin in Chuck we know they were a multi talented cast who could easily cover drama, action or comedy. Greatness was there for the taking but it was never allowed to fully blossom.

  35. Cat

You're forgetting Nathan in Castle, Chris ;)

While I love Serenity more than life itself and was devastated by the fact that Firefly was cut short so early in its wonderfully rich life, I have to agree with the above statements that it would be much better to bring Firefly back as a series–or even a miniseries–to tell the rest of the story rather than making Serenity into another movie. Serenity said all it had to say, and a sequel would just take away from the masterpiece Joss Whedon created. It wasn't left open enough for a part 2.

Riddick on the other hand..I've heard rumors that the original part 3 was scrapped because it was too big a budget–don't know how true that is–and the part three they're thinking of doing now is 'smaller scale.' I honestly hope they don't do that unless the original idea was crap and the newer one better fits the series.

  36. George W

    To Universal

The Sci-Fi community enjoys one great thing about the creation of any Sci-Fi or Fantasy Epic; and that is Diversity.

I enjoy Vin Diesel work but it is to the point of oversaturation with no viable merchandise option linked to any of his films.

Additionally Vin plays "Vin" in every movie. But with Serenity you must look at merchandise, fan base, convention base, and a higher level of community interaction.
This leads to a larger international market with a reception of better results (profits) over time.

Fox made a huge mistake by letting Firefly go and sticking with reality shows, which led to no-one watching them a second time around or buying a product based off of it.

Serenity 2, under the guidance and direction of Whedon is the best place for Universal to place its funds for maximum returns in all areas.

The Verse equals Universal Profit – Get It…..

  37. V

    Serenity NOW!

  38. Raf Cruz

Serenity 2 please….the first Serenity was never properly promoted. Imagine having a movie released and not even having your stars appear on late night talk shows to promote. For crying out loud Universal could have had Nathan, Gina, Summer etc. appear on the Today show – but NOoooooo!

The DVD sales should prove to the suits once and for all that Serenity has only gained more converts to it's cause than ever before. A sequel will be met with millions of adoring fans around the world and you don't need $100 Million to make it.
But, like others, I'd rather have the TV series back. Go Browncoats.

  39. Pieter Dekker

Hmm, tough choice. I'm a big fan of Summer Glau, for the actress she is, but im also a big fan of the Richard B. Riddick personage. Personally I would say that there shouldn't be a Serenity 2, since i can't imagen a followup of Serenity, with Wash (Alan Tudyk) and Shepherd Book (Ron Glass) dead. Serenity was a great movie on its own, its story ended as it should have, and no followups in that part of the story should be made without Wash + Shepherd. Instead, it should be great if someone picks up Firefly as a show again…. Im sure the cast would be enthusiastic to do it… =)

As for Riddick, I hope Vin Diesel can get the movies done, I definitely would like to see the dark tones of a new Riddick movie. But well, we'll see what happens… I just hope we'll get to see Summer Glau back as River Tam =)

  40. Ginger Snap

I would like to see both movies made, but if only one could be made it would have to be Serenity. It has the best writing and story line.

  41. rbk

    Serenity 2. No debate, really.

  42. Dano

I enjoyed the Riddick films. Pitch Black was awesome, COR not so much, but neither of them compare to the Serenity/Firefly 'verse. I would literally cry a tear of joy if Serenity 2 were announced.

  43. Nic

Please more Firefly! I love Serenity and have watched it an embarrassment of times but I second the statement regarding the ongoing relationship as opposed to the one night stand.
Pitch Black was great, but Chronicles was a let down (I enjoyed it but it could've been so much better!). Why go out on a limb for another one when the last one was so lame? Sure as heck would have to have some tricky PR to win back all those people whose hopes were dashed last time.
Firefly/Serenity popularity has been growing sneakily though.

I DARE YOU UNIVERSAL: GROW A SPINE AND TAKE A CHANCE!!!!!…it's not like you don't make bazillions of dollars every year anyhow!

(Oh, but we have to carry on between Firefly and Serenity because it just wouldn't be the same without Wash or Shepherd Book!)

  44. Kevin

Serenity, easily the best show no one heard of. There's way more to explore in the 'verse. Plus Vin Diesel is the single worst actor ever.

  45. Blisterpeanuts

I want both, please. But Vin and Twohy need a great script writer to avoid the awkwardness of Chronicles. Chronicles was great in many ways but certain parts, especially to do with Vin's clumsy delivery of lines, was cringeworthy. I haven't watched Serenity yet, am about 2/3 through the episodes which I discovered 2 weeks ago and love. I will order the DVD of Serenity and the TV series to show my support. I already have COR director's cut and Pitch Black.

  46. Michael

I would really like to see joss make a sequel to Serenity. That show was one of the many few that really touched all phases of everyday life while adding humor; which you didn't really expect haha. I was hoping that after the sales for Serenity and firefly went through the roof Joss would see that as a sign and reprise all of the roles and bring the show back; but alas he hasn't. If Serenity 2 was made you would be surprised at the number of people that would line up to see it for two reasons 1. because of the reputation Joss has made for himself and 2. because the characters are relatable. With the production of Serenity 2 Joss could probably get firefly up and running again maybe even continuing from the same place he left off, and if so hopefully fox/universal wont mess with his storyline and allow HIM to be the judge on what episodes should air when!

  47. Jayne Jr

Serenity 2 hands down. One of the few shows with such a commitment to character depth and development. The show and the movie are far beyond awesome!.

  48. Leonard Matsumoto

I think the firefly series failed in large part due to not enough people being aware of it. The appeal is almost universal and it is in part why we dote on cowboys and wanderers of the fringe and truckers etc. It is the story of loners on an endless journey and will be why we will eventually go to the stars and other universes. Firefly appeals to me because if I could I would journey out the same way. Since people have existed there have been those who would not fit into molds but search for freedom. Universal studios seeks to feed the pap to those who never would seek new worlds of exploration and freedom. Many of us wonder at the mindless drivel of many shows and perhaps there is a wide divide between those who blindly follow and those who seek their own paths. Firefly to me is my elusive dream.

  49. Matthew

I would absolutely love a Serenity sequel! I thought that the first film was amazing, its one of my most loved movies of all time.
Although i didnt know anything about Firefly until after i looked into the film. Maybe it was not brought to Australian audiences?
Anyway, it would be great if they made a sequel
    :)

  50. Ray

The Riddick movies were okay but nothing to write home about – Serenity on the other hand has got to be the most badass show that ever was – why it was taken off tv is a mystery , but if they ever decide to make a sequel I'll be the first one in line for tickets :]

  51. Lugger

Firefly is one of the top-selling DVD box sets of all time. Serenity also did quite well on DVD. There is money to be made, while also bringing together one of the best ensemble casts and talent in a generation.
Riddick is just another action movie. Yawn.

  52. Lugger

Also, some background on the demise of Firefly. It actually did get reasonable numbers. The problem is that Fox pre-sold the ads based on a young male audience. But the actual audience that watched the show was older, and more of a 50/50 gender split. So they had to compensate all those advertisers for the young male under-delivery, while not getting any money for the larger older audience.

  53. wanderforth

There have been times when I have questioned Joss Whedon, and yet he has always come through for me. I loved Pitch Black for many strange reasons but The Chronicals let me down more than the deaths of beloved characters ever could.

Joss Whedon can have my box office dollars any day.

  54. asharri

Please please please bring back Serenity/Firefly in any form!!!

  55. Andrew

Serenity/Firefly was amazing, and is highly reviewed so almost everywhere. Fox ruins almost everything they get their hands on and if they would have done any advertisement for the show it would maybe still be on today, but then we wouldn't have serenity. The story is very much open to a sequel or prequel. For those of you who have been reading Whedon's Those Left Behind comic books based on the between TV show and Movie time you understand the prequel idea. I also believe that with serenity dvd/blue-ray sales browncoats fans have only grown larger along with the actors that star in the movies all seeming to still have a job in acting on one show or another. They may not all be huge names and the like, but their acting in the show/movie was superb and just buy getting their names out their more, more people will recognized them in a Serenity 2 trailer. As for Riddick I thought pitch black was a good movie(not even close to serenity good though), but The Chronicles was terrible. I thought the games where awesome though and personally would enjoy them making more Riddick games than ever trying to fix a franchise that's really just ok.

  56. mleko

As a sf fan i'd rather see both, but if i need to choose, its Serenity 2 ofcourse, no doubt about it.

  57. flowerchan

I'm sorry, this is actually a question?
There could never be any competition between some wham-bam, in-your-face action leh suh and Firefly/Serenity.
And there is little closure in our Serenifly 'verse. Shephard Book's backstory (still possible even thoughhe's dead :'(), the Blue Sun corporation, and our romantic tension between Mal and Inara. There is so much room for continuation with Zoe having to deal with Wash's death and everything else that wasn't wrapped up with Serenity. The tons of smaller storylines in the larger one is what draws us to the Serenifly 'verse.
I'd personally like to find out more about YoSaffBridge.

  58. Bond84

I'd say serenity 2. I liked pitch black, but i really dont think theres alot else in the Ridick films just more repetitive action. Come on Universal finish what Fox couldn't I dare you.

  59. shelly

I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to get another Serenity movie, but even if Universal greenlit one, it's been so long I doubt it's feasible. Besides most of the cast being tied up with other projects, Joss is probably too busy with Dollhouse now. *sad*

  60. Kcat

Nathan Fillion breathed such life into Captain Malcolm Reynolds that his character affects viewers to this day, and he will live forever. Those of us who support Nathan with our every breath have done so because Nathan made us believe. He is that gifted as an actor. I would be deeply grateful to see Firefly brought back and Serenity 2 given life. Please right the wrong done to these amazing projects and to Nathan and all those who were part of it, including Joss Whedon.

    Thank you,

    Kcat

  61. Nasiamarie88

Though everyone else has said it pretty well, in case the point was not made, Serenity 2 would definately make a bigger impact than any Riddick. Don't get me wrong, I liked it…but Firefly/Serenity can't be topped. Everything about that show was just awesome, and you would make a lot of people happy to make an addition.

    Browncoats Forever!!!
    -Mel

Also…when do we find out the verdict?

  63. Tracy

Serenity 2, hands down! If you want good Karma to come your way, you'll make this movie…

  64. Tom

Trilogy, O trilogy, I want my trilogy,

Don't stop at one, Don't stop at two,

    Gorramit, gimme three!

Trilogy, O trilogy, that's what I want to see,

Someday I'll own a boxed set

    Of that Big Damn Trilogy!

  65. CharlieX

Serenity2 would give me something else to watch on a weekly basis while pretending to do work. It would a most asspishus day for the Browncoats and all peoples of the verse!

  66. Robert Slezak

I've been watching Firefly's for about 3 months now, I watch them over and over and get more involved with the characters and the whole Firefly community! I think without a doubt that either a new TV Series (preferably), or a Serenity 2 Movie would be a fantastic thing indeed, quite Shiny actually.

Oh yes, find a way to bring back all the characters from the original series; it can be, and has been done many times before. Just think of the Doctor on Stargate Atlantis that was killed off, the fans when nuts and then we had a cloned doctor…

  67. DAvid

Serenity for sure, it was a great TV series and a fantastic movie, i say bring back both….

  68. Jeff

    @raistlinsghost:
    Serenity 2 definatly
it has got 91% of the vote !!
    Awesome series

  69. Frederick

I was pretty surprised when i saw that the majority actually would like to see an Serenity sequel infront of another Chronicles flick.
But i guess those who, (me included) know that the mindnumbing awsomeness of the Riddick universe will prevail in the long run, thus not needing even to participate in voting, can relax and marvel over the lack of taste out there. I´ll admit that Chronicles of Riddick suffers from,….no f**k it, it´s awsome, period. One of my favorit sci-fi movies. The games are pretty freakin good too.

    Go Vin go! hahaha

  70. Kcat

Serenity 2 would rule the Universe. The majority is right. Serenity is awesome and magnificent, and Serenity 2 would be wondrous to behold, just like its star, Nathan Fillion.

Go Nathan, Go Nathan, Go Nathan! We are on your side!

    Kcat

  71. Frederick

    @Kcat: Nathan who?

  72. Kcat

    @Frederick:

Nathan Fillion! He's the brilliant star of the first Serenity movie and the Firefly TV series. He is also the star of Castle on ABC. Thanks for asking!

  73. Robert S.

Hopefully, Universal is monitoring this article and the feedback!

Bringing back Serenity would be such an achievement that the fan base would go nuts and dance in the streets. I go to charity screenings and the popularity of the show just keeps growing; I'd love to see a Serenity 2 movie with the original cast intact.

I've watched everything Star Trek including the original series thru every iteration, and nothing compares to Firefly and Serenity in my loyalty and interest. I continue to watch them over and over and never get tired of that unique ensemble of characters…

  74. Q

Honestly when I first heard of a western in space i was like, "No I dont want to see it." I love Scifi. But i didnt want to see this. My neighbors really wanted to show me the movie because the believe i would like it. They were wrong. I loved it. I was in shock after I left their house. I was upset that I didnt know about this movie. I wanted more. I went back and saw the series with my wife in 72 hours (at our house of course). She never stays up late for bloody tv. Yet here we are watching the entire series into the late hours of the morning and looking forward to the next night. I was still in shock because I was late to know about serenity and firefly. I wish I could have been part of the bunch that where there when they heard "we have a movie!" I want to see the revival opening day so I can say, "I was there."

I would really like to have the people who decide to take Firefly and manipulate it the way they did and "DUMP it" to be publically pelted with roten tomatoes for 7 minutes.

    I like Riddick. I like Vin D.

I would like to see both.

At gun point which one. Serenity 2 with a follow up of 3.

Then a series. Better yet, give us the series 1st to feed the starving fans.

    From Wikipedia –
On March 12, 2009, the series was the winner of the first annual Hulu awards in the category "Shows We'd Bring Back".

    But what do fans know.

  75. Serenity 2, obviously. I don't really care for Riddick, I actually found The Chronicles of Riddick incredibly mediocre. :/ Another Star Trek directed by J.J.Abrams would be nice too.

  76. Kim

DEFINATELY Serenity 2…seems like after the movie, instead of being forgotten, it's even more popular =)

  77. POFW

Mediocre is certenly the word we were looking for whenwe wanted to describe Serenity.
Please Universal!!! publicly announce you will never EVER do a sequel of this pile of firefly dodo.

    Sincerely!
    People of the free world.

  78. Dust Devil

Give me Serenity 2 , please

  79. Jomarl

I would prefer the TV series again. Can't see why SciFi (SyFy) wouldn't see the potential here…. not for a movie though, they cut too many corners on effects.

  80. Taylor

Gorramit, give us a Big Damn Sequel! :D

  81. Prash Nayar

OMG, Is this even a question? Serenity/ Firefly definitely!!! I'll watch them in whatever form I can get them. If it takes donating money on a monthly basis, I'm up for it. If they need slave labor at the sets, I'm up for it! Gorramit, there's so many things unexplored!

Bring them back before it's too late!!

  82. Techtrekker

    SERENITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GIVE US A BIG DAMN SEQUEL, GORRAMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    nuff said

  83. Corenna B.

While I love both Riddick and Battlestar Galactica…I am a BROWNCOAT all the way! My vote is for Serenity 2. Though if I'm to be totally honest, I would love to simply see the series on air once again. With the sudden resurgence of sci-fi/fantasy shows out there, and even with movies like Star Trek hitting it big at the box office, now seems like a good time to give it a go on a series like this.

Sadly, there are too many networks putting their cash behind more reality tv, and more medical dramas. And it seems the general population cannot get enough of them. So where does that leave the rest of us? Fighting the good fight, I suppose.

Joss Whedon made me believe in the power of creativity and imagination on television again, it seems such a shame to see Firefly/Serenity fade from the screen when it was, in my opinion, his greatest achievement.

You can't take the sky from us!

  84. missyj

Whedon is brilliant and its sad to see all of his other films, shows that are gone. Serenity was a great movie,as well as all of his other shows he made. Vin I'm sorry but your way over casted for movies. Really do both if they have too, but another Serenity would be great, what are they waiting for………Get charmed back, Angel, and Firefly……He is the best out there for scifi. I vote Serenity 2.

  85. Carl Galyen

Did not really care for the Riddick films. Love Serenity though, would much rather see a Serenity sequel.

    GIVE US A SEQUEL!!!!!

  86. Mal

I would defo want a Serenity 2. And it would have to be a sequel showing the war of independance against the allience and maybe expanding a little on the history of the crew?

    Bring us Serenity 2!

  87. Robert Lamph

Serenity, and Firefly > a must for us scifi buffs!!!! When we lost Firefly we lost a great story that should still be told. Combined that with a 2nd Serenity…..there is a heaven.

  88. ozymandias888

Fox blew it. They had another Star Trek franchise.

Whedon's 'verse is better than Star Trek, also better than the original Star Wars trilogy (as for what came later, haven't even bothered to watch SW II or the Clone Wars).

  89. kykmorph

Going to have to go against the obvious majority here. Although I'll admit that the quality of Firefly and Serenity is pretty much second to none, it simply did not beg a sequel. The ending of it seems to be where Whedon wanted to leave it, and it did provide with a sense of closure.

If you made a sequel would you just have a downsized cast? Or would you try to replace Book and Wash somehow? Either way would feel like a letdown to me.

Riddick on the other hand, has a much more complex and interesting story than most people give it credit for (Sidenote: If you haven't seen the directors cut of Chronicles, you have no place in this conversation, since you don't know what you're choosing between. Go watch it a few times, then come back and comment). The ending of Chronicles is obviously a cliffhanger, and provides no real sense of closure and leaves plenty of room to expand upon.

There is more depth to the Riddick character and story than most people notice (or have the IQ/attention span to be able to notice), and more I'd like to learn about it.

That being said, Firefly and Riddick are both awesome, and if either sequel came out, I'd be there opening day, and own the DVD the day it came out.

  90. Torbjörn Hedin

I was exposed to the awesomeness that is Firefly/Serenity as late as last month when a friend lent me the dvd. I live in Sweden, so this was the first time I even heard of it – and I loved it all. More Firefly as a series if possible, a Serenity sequel at least!

Oh, and I did enjoy Pitch Black, so another movie in that style would not be sneezed upon.

  91. warbirdguy

Give us fans more Firefly and/or Serenity 2. I'm actually shocked that the box office take was so small. Was it limited to a amaller number of theaters than normal? All I can say is that when I saw Serenity in the theater it simply blew me away. More Firefly and/or Serenity please!

  92. knightviper

first make Serenity 2 and then bring it back to tv that way you could explane in the movie how your bringing back the full crew or at least give it a fresh new start from were you ended it and mybe add some new crew members! either way just bring it back please!!! pitch black was good but not great like Serenity!!!

  93. Roberto

I am still in disbelief that this series or its sequel movie hasn't been picked my someone somewhere? It's simply the best Sci-Fi out there. I watch it over and over and I only wish there were more episodes…

Weadon is probably content with its cult like status and doesn't want to tarnish its popularity with a lackluster sequel.

    Oh well…

  94. THOMAS SCHWENKLER

Are you Friggin kidding? There should be no doubt in any SciFi lovers' heart that both franchise's should have sequels made. Serenity was a great compilation of the series, but needs to have MORE, MORE, MORE… whereas the Riddick story needs to be told as well. There should be NO comparison between the two and treated as two entirely different products. I aqm tired of studio execs. telling me what I "want" to watch… just let the directors/writers put it out there and see where it goes from there.

  95. THOMAS SCHWENKLER

BTW, who the hell are these critics anyway??? Who cares about "box office." When it comes down to it, the movie goer is the one paying, not the critic. Marketing, and how aggressively it's done is how money is made, so if a critic says it's garbage, then the masses will not go based purely on some schmucks word… wake up people and stop being sheep. These people aren't any different than you. We all have an opinion, why are you listening to theirs?

  96. Daniel

    Serenity 2 ofc!!!

  97. alex

give us serenity 2…please…now….its almost stupid the money spent on bad movies or TV shows that should be going towards firefly/serenity etc…disgrace to sci fi is what it is…firefly is the best…so much left untold
