Worst Hollywood Weekend In 7 Years?

Last night I just ignored the box-office results, which I cover on a weekly basis based on early Friday numbers, but today I decided I just couldn't go without saying anything. Steve Mason at Fantasy Moguls is saying this weekend is likely to be the worst weekend in Hollywood in seven years! He says you "have to go back to September 21-23, 2001 to find a 3-day" weekend as slow as this one in which the top 12 movies look to gross an estimated $44.43 million. In 2001 the number was $43.53 million.

Lionsgate's unscreened Bangkok Dangerous looks to just beat out Tropic Thunder with a potential $6.85 million over Thunder's $6.43, which means it could still go either way. The only other new releases were small ones and played no effect on the overall tally.

The Dark Knight looks to hold the third spot followed by The House Bunny and Babylon A.D. to round out the top five.

8. Death Race (Universal) – $2.67 million
9. Mamma Mia (Universal) – $2.67 million
10. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Weinstein) – $1.99 million
