Will 'Silent Hill: Revelation 3D' be the First Direct-to-Video 3D Blu-ray Release?

Did we really need more from 'Silent Hill'?

It doesn't yet have a domestic distributor, but it now has a pair of actors and a first official image as Davis Films sent over the above look at Adelaide Clemens as Heather Mason in Silent Hill: Revelation 3D. The film began production today in Toronto under the direction of Michael J. Bassett (Solomon Kane). Kit Harington (HBO's upcoming series "Game of Thrones") is also set to co-star.

The film is a continuation of the Christoph Gans-directed 2006 feature based on the Konami videogame of the same name. The Gans release featured Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Jodelle Ferland. The first film wasn't terrible, but it was by no means good and the ending was awful. The film was made on a reported budget of $50 million and eked out almost $47 million domestically and another $50 million in foreign markets, which is to say it wasn't an absolute bust, but a sequel never seemed like a sure-thing.

As for this follow-up, the 3D tag is curious. I wouldn't expect a 3D film to go direct-to-video, but how can this film do anything less? Look at Drive Angry, 3D isn't the solution to make more money on crap films studios thought it would be. People wise up and aren't as willing to spend more money for a film just because it requires you wear glasses while watching. Without a domestic distributor already lined up this one seems like it's destined to become the first direct-to-video 3D Blu-ray release.

Lionsgate is currently handling international sales, but at this point no one is on board to release it domestically.

That said, here's the plot description:

For years, Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

Releasing it direct-to-dvd would be stupid.
The first was excellent, one of the best horror movies to have come out in a long time besides maybe Drag Me To Hell.

I remember last summer I was in England and they were showing Space Chimps 2 in 3D at certain theaters, even though Space Chimps would later go direct-to-DVD here in the States. So that's not completely unheard of.

But Silent Hill sounds like a bigger production than Space Chimps or a lot of the other lame DVD-only sequels that come out these days. I'd be surprised if it skipped theaters. It's certainly more marketable than Drive Angry, My Soul to Take or Sanctum, plus it has the built in audience from fans of the game. (like myself!)

The first Silent Hill was good, it had a nice style, very different from most horror movies from that time. And it was very faithful to the videogame.

    The ending though, yes, awful!
I hated that climax with the 'big boss fight' at the church. Way too videogamey.

The ending was not bad, it just wasn't typical happy ending bullshit. Silent Hill has always had different endings and very few of them are happy. It was a good film and i am happy to call it a part of my SH collections.
