Which Five Animated Films Do You Think Will be Nominated for an Oscar?
Yup, I said five...
Word has come down from In Contention, and Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol will be submitted into the Best Animated Film race, which means the category will have enough films to qualify (anywhere from 16 to 17) for five nominations as opposed to the traditional three. Of course, as per the rules this doesn't mean the Academy has to nominate five films:
All submissions sent to the Academy will be screened by the Animated Feature Film Award Screening Committee(s). After the screenings, the committee(s) will vote by secret ballot to nominate from 3 to 5 motion pictures for this award. In any year in which 8 to 15 animated features are released in Los Angeles County, a maximum of 3 motion pictures may be nominated. In any year in which 16 or more animated features are submitted and accepted in the category, a maximum of 5 motion pictures may be nominated.
Can you imagine the Academy not nominating five films, something that hasn't happened since 2003 when Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away took home the award? As a result, we must consider which five films will get those top five slots? Here's a quick prediction by yours truly in alphabetical order:
- 9
- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
- Coraline
- Ponyo
- Up
RUNNERS UP:
- A Christmas Carol
- The Fantastic Mr. Fox
- Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
- Monsters vs. Aliens
- The Princess and the Frog
One thing I found interesting was Entertainment Weekly's Dave Karger asking his readers, "Are animated films so much tougher to make that they should have such a greater shot at scoring an Oscar nod?" I guess he forgot that both Norbit and Click are both Oscar nominees thanks to the "Best Makeup" category. Therefore my answer to Karger is HELL YES! And it's not about animated films being tougher to make as much as it is about whether they are deserving or not.
Of the films listed above I have seen six of them so far and all six are deserving of Oscar nods before Click… Sorry, I have not and never will see Norbit so if you have seen that one you can add your thoughts on that one below.
I have also updated the Animated Section of "The Contenders", to check that out click here.

I Know It's A Long Shot But I Believe
9
Astro Boy
Battle For Terra
Coraline
Up
Shall Take The Nominations
Up
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Ponyo
Princess and the Frog
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
Next in line: Coraline, 9
It'll only let you vote for one…
My picks:
Up
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Ponyo
Coraline
The Princess and the Frog
Apologies, there was an error in the poll and it has been corrected. I have deleted the logs and you can vote again selecting five titles now.
My prediction:
Up
Coraline
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
A Christmas Carol
Runner Up: Ponyo, Princess and the Frog, 9.
It's hard to choose, especially since a few of these films could either be amazing or crappy, which would definitely influence who or what will be nomiated for an Animated Film Oscar. If you asked me two months ago, I would've definitely put "9" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox" on my list. After being extremely disappointed with "9" & by watching the almost-cool-but-not-quite trailers for "Fox"…I'm not too sure.
These are my picks though.
Up
Ponyo
Coraline
The Princess and the Frog
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
In order of nomination chances (in my opinion):
Up- Pixar is always a contender, and the fact that this is being hailed as one of the studio's greatest makes its chances of not being nominated 1 in 1,000
Ponyo- I personally thought this was a very safe effort by Miyazaki, but critics (including you, Brad) raved about this one. If there really are going to be 5 slots, its hard to imagine Ponyo not getting nominated
Coraline- It was a haunting and original movie, and voters will definitely be able to see that. It should bag a nomination without a problem
The Princess & The Frog- After so much computer animation in the past couple of years, a hand-drawn Disney effort will seem like a breath of fresh air. The trailer doesn't look very good, but voters may warm up to this just because it reminds them of the animation back in the old days
Fantastic Mr. Fox- It's going to be a tough call between this one, 9, and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, but I think this one will pull through in the end if the reviews are good enough. Again, it's something different, and that will catch the voter's eye from the get-go
I'm sorry, but there is no way Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs deserves an Oscar nod. I mean, it was fun and animated well, but the plot was banal and weird and definitely a step down from the book. I'd love to see Up, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The Princess and the Frog get nominated.

Fantastic Mr. Fox just looks bad to me.
Hmm..could something weird happen like a a scenario wherein UP manages a Best Picture nomination wherein it should have a good shot at, and be excluded in the animated feature film category? The Wall-E snub from last year and the typical Oscar politics of rewarding those for their "body of work" as well as UP being a great film to boot, leads me to believe it will land a nomination in the now expanded 10 Best Picture slots.
The 5 animated film nominees will be:
1.UP (to go along with a BP nom)
2.Ponyo
3.Coraline
4.Princess and the Frog
5.A Christmas Carol
@junjun: So many people think Up is going to be nominated for Best Picture. It's an amazing animated movie, but amazing live action is much harder to come by. It won't be on it.
Norbit is an absolute masterpiece that deserved all the critical acclaim it got — I hope my sarcasm is obvious.
I think UP will indeed sneak in there among the 10 best picture nominees. The Wall-E snub last year helps it to some degree as well as the "we owe them" factor for Pixar to finally be recognized for the big prize. Of course, they could just snub UP again and wait for Toy Story 3 next year.
Anyway, the 5 animated nominees I think will be..
UP
Ponyo
Princess and the Frog
Coraline
9
If "Surf's Up" can be nominated for Best Animation, then so can "Cloudy…"
The animation nominees will be
UP ( A no brainer, and definitely deserves a spot at the BP big table)
Coraline
Ponyo
Princess and the Frog
A Christmas Carol
Disney could very well have 4 of the 5 slots to themselves
Because I think Up is deserving of an nomination in the "big" best picture race I switched it out for The Fantastic Mr. Fox, but other than that I feel like Brad's list is right on.
apparently my prediction is the same as the majority – but, sure it's great that these films are recognized, do we really care what "the academy" thinks of them? If you love the movie does it really need some sticker added to the dvd case?
