What's the Current Temperature on Kat Dennings?
Hot, cold, indifferent?
The upcoming feature Daydream Nation which stars Kat Dennings, Josh Lucas and Reece Thompson, centers on a girl (Dennings) who's moved with her recently widowed father to a small town where she gets involved in a love triangle with her teacher (Lucas) and another student (Thompson). I already have a problem with the idea of the now 25-year-old Dennings playing a high school student, but that aside my ears perked up when Jeff Wells wrote of Dennings asking, "So Kat Dennings is a dryer, more deadpan, slightly more opaque version of Emma Stone?"
Wells goes on to mention Dennings has a supporting role in the upcoming Thor, which is a role the trailers make me think she is going to get slaughtered for if because she seems to only be there to supply one-liners, which could get annoying if her character adds nothing else. I hope that's not the case.
I've never thought to compare Dennings to anyone really. I don't see the Emma Stone comparison at all, but instead see Dennings as a unique actress that typically brings a certain level of intelligent wit to her characters. Had Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist been any better I think she may have already taken off, but I also imagine she'll be an actress that's around for a long, long time and perhaps secure a longevity the likes of say, Allison Janney? A comparison I think works.
Have a look at the Daydream Nation trailer below. It's a film that's been sitting on the shelf for about a year now, but Anchor Bay is opening it on a limited basis on May 6 and DVD and Blu-ray on May 17. You can get more at the official site.

Incredibly annoying voice. That's all I have to say about her.
I don't really see the Emma Stone comparison either, but I think she's primed to take it to the next level if she were offered something with some meat on it. Nick and Nora's was nice for what it was, but it was never going to be more than a harmless flick that aimed to gather a cult following.
She's a good actor, although sometimes she's not that fun to watch
She's not like Emma Stone at all, but she's one of those supposed "it girls" that indie kids & movie buffs latched on to, since she's young & talented & witty & has a fairly unnatural beauty to her, which is why she probably got the comparison.
Whatever, I like Kat Dennings, but I haven't seen her in anything worthwhile in a long time. I doubt that Thor will propel her to new heights;same goes for Daydream Nation (which doesn't look bad by any means). Like you said, Nick & Norah would've been the film that made her a star if it did well (it would've been her 'Easy A", so to speak), but not a huge deal. I'll keep looking forward to whatever she does.
I really want to see this now. I like her voice because – there's no other way of putting it – she sounds like a person. She has this realistic air about her that I love.
I don't think that she's like Emma Stone except for the fact that they play characters in the same specific genre. Also, the line in the trailer about trying out being someone different was reminiscent of "Easy A."
Another bridge between the two is "House Bunny," the film in which I saw both of them act for the first time :)
She is pretty unremarkable imo. Maybe that will change someday but she's been around for quite some time.
maybe a B list Kristen Stewart?
But…that would be saying that Kristen Stewart is A-List?
Madness!
you wouldn't say Stewart is A-list? She's the head of a billion dollar, world-wide franchise. Say what you want about her acting, but she can go anywhere and peoeple know her name. PLus she has a resume the longer than most actress her age or older.
She's Amanda Seyfried but a little more conscientious. Or maybe the lack of ubiquity makes me forget her bad choices.
And that face that we (including me) have to compare her to other actresses is a bad sign already.
I think the first time I ever saw her was in The 40 Year Old Virgin.
I think I'm still waiting for that wow performance, a performance that makes everyone stand up and look. From what I've seen she's a dependable actress who fits in the background of films but is rarely ever centre stage. She's good but she doesn't have that pull with moviegoers (I think) that would catapult someone into the limelight but with Thor she'll definitely get more exposure.
I like Kat Dennings. She's really quite different compared to a lot of the boring, generic, young actresses out there at the moment. I think she's definitely one to watch.
Great young actress. Though I enjoyed the hell out of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist I'd have to say her standout roll would be from Charlie Bartlett. If more people saw that flick she'd get more recognition. She was overshadowed by alot of people in Nick and Norah but in Charlie Bartlett she was only overshadowed by Robert Downey Jr. I'd definitely like to see more from her.
I liked her in "Nick & Norah." I LOVED her in "40-Year-Old-Virgin." She's quite the capable actress, but she isn't in much.
