What are You Watching This Weekend?

I'm looking to soend some time with Zatoichi

zatoichiAfter yesterday's announcement that Criterion would be bringing the 25-film Zatoichi series to Blu-ray this November I decided I would finally check a couple of them out as they had been sitting in my Hulu Plus queue for quite some time. I ended up watching the first two from 1962 -- The Tale of Zatoichi and The Tale of Zatoichi Continues. To no real surprise, I enjoyed them both and even posted on Twitter that The Wolverine would have been far better had it simply learned a little from The Tale of Zatoichi and just remade it.

I mention this because I'm hoping over the weekend I can watch a couple more. None of them are very long, running right around 90 minutes if not shorter and Hulu's current presentations are quite nice. If you're interested and don't yet have a Hulu account you can click here for a free two week trial.

Otherwise, I'll probably also watch Short Term 12, which I have a screener for and have heard very good things. How about you?

I definitely plan to watch The Grandmaster and CZ12 Chinese Zodiac (Jackie Chan movie). On top of that I am hoping to watch Europa Report and Harvey starring James Stewart.

I've already seen Once, Stand by Me, Eastern Promises, Walk the Line, and Babel, all of which I enjoyed. Memento, Frost/Nixon, Rosemary's Baby, and The Game are all checked out from the library and I'm getting Side Effects from Netflix tomorrow. I'm not going to watch too much but there are clearly plenty of options.

I've been on vacation and just got back this afternoon so I haven't watched anything so far this week, but I'm hoping to fix that soon as I'm seeing "Blue Jasmine" later tonight. I also plan on checking out "Mud" and "Sinign' in the Rain" this weekend, and I might watch "Admission" as well. It doesn't look very good, but I love Tina Fey and am willing to give the movie a chance.

    Have a good weekend everyone!

Admission actually really surprised me when I watched it a couple of weeks ago. I didn't think it looked very good either, but I actually found it to be fairly decent.

Awesome! I'll be watching it tomorrow or Sunday night and am hoping for the best.

    Mr. Woodcock
    The Dukes Of Hazzard (2005)
    The Host (2013)

This weekend I'll probably rewatch Bruce Almighty and Inception, but I'm not sure what else I'll watch at home. On Sunday night I'll be going to a drive-in to see We're The Millers and The Conjuring. That's it for this weekend!

Between today / tomorrow, I'm going to try to check out two of the following:

    - The Butler
    - The Spectacular Now
    - Blue Jasmine
    - The To-Do List

Saw Only God Forgives last night - and well, didn't enjoy it at all.

From Netflix I will try to finish X2 (haven't seen it since theatres and trying to refresh on the franchise before watching Wolverine), and also have Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (never seen) and Safe Haven (you know why I have this).

The Zatoichi series are great I have seen a few myself. I really enjoyed the crossover film they did when Zatoichi meets Yojimbo it's great seeing two legend being in the same film, or the Blind Swordman meets the One Armed Swordman. I don't know if you have ever checked out the Lone Wolf and Cub series but they are also very entertaining as well.

I've been way too busy over the last month or so catching up TV shows that I've kind of neglected films. I did catch Pain & Gain yesterday which I thought was such a terribly made movie that it was quite fun. Hoping to catch 2Guns tomorrow and hopefully The Act of Killing.

Brad, you should see the movie Manic with Joseph-Gordon Levitt, I thought Short Term 12 kind of remade it in a much lighter way. I've been wanting to see Le Samurai, Sweet Smell of Success, Post Tenebras Lux, and finish watching The Departed.

I just got back from The Butler. I had a few problems, but I enjoyed it overall and highly recommend it. I also saw We're the Millers, which I thought was a pretty decent comedy. This weekend, I think I'm finally gonna bite the bullet and watch Safe Haven.

Blue Jasmine finally opened here! /

... And Fruitvale Station. Of course that there would be no interesting movies for half the summer, then two open the same day. :|

What a unique weekend. First, I rewatched Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ (my wife had never seen it). Still a great film; however, I realized it wasn't the A+ film I remember. Quite the artistic achievement, in spite of the gore-overload, I give it a B+

Caught three films in theaters this weekend:

Kick-Ass 2 - I loved the original, unfortunately, the sequel (while still being quite an enjoyably loopy action/comedy/comic book film) never manages to recapture the spark of the original. C+

The Big Wedding - Just awful. Robert DeNiro's character can sum up the movie for me in a line of dialogue from the film: "Bless me father for this is bullshit." D-

To The Wonder - I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I've finally seen a Terrence Malick film that wasn't a masterwork of cinema. I loved the dreamlike quality of the proceedings, the waifish performance of Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem's priest who's lost his faith and the beautiful cinematography; however, overall, nothing was able to bring all of the parts into a cohesive whole. I left the film shifting between feelings of admiration and confusion. Still, I'm still pondering the film. B-
