What Am I Missing with this Defendor' Trailer?
I just don't see the humor
A bunch of the movie blogs around the Internet are buzzing about the trailer featured below for Defendor, a canadian superhero feature starring Woody Harrelson, Kat Dennings and Sandra Oh. In the film Harrelson stars as Arthur Poppington, a "regular" man who adopts a superhero persona calling himself "Defendor" on his way to fight crime and take down a drug and weapons dealer he refers to as "Captain Industry."
The film is written and directed by Peter Stebbings and looks to be some kind of screwball comedy that goes all misunderstood dummy in the and, and I use "comedy" lightly since this trailer didn't even give me a chuckle. Defendor's weapons include the likes of marbles and lime juice and apparently that is part of the joke as is his duct-taped on "D" on his uniform.
Plenty of the bloggers are comparing it to Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, which is expected to be ultra-violent, but from what I am hearing along the same lines.
Defendor will be at the Toronto Film Festival so I guess we may hear more about it from there, but give the trailer a watch below. Are you laughing? Interested in seeing this one?

This doesn't seem like a comedy, more like a character study of a deeply disturbed individual with a few laughs thrown in to break up the awkwardness.
reminds me of special
Are you sure this isn't straight to DVD?
not funny, but wouldnt mind renting it :)
I agree with Brian. I don't think this is a comedy. I am certainly interested. Looks very, very dark.
Woody is a real comedy gem, but I'm just sick of superheros. The superhero is more of an American cultural icon which us non-USA folks struggle to comprehend. Our heros are more tangible and organic… usually interpretations of people whom actually exist(ed).
I laughed, chuckled, and chortled. I think it is funny and sad at the same time. That is a rare, very rare, combination that many a comedian has tried to accomplish. It's not surprising that a non-comedian has. What is surprising is that it's Woody Harrelson. Of course I feel compelled to add that my judgement is based solely on this trailer which could be misleading.
Will this find an audience? I'm not optimistic judging from the comments. But I'm interested.
Seems interesting atleast, im guessing it wont be a film for everyone tho.
Kind of makes me think of Blank man
Sandra Oh and Kat Dennings! And Woody Harrellson! But actors alone can't sell a movie to me. If the reviews are off-the-wall amazing, then I may check it out.
Brad,
I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that this movie is supposed to be a comedy. If your analysis is based solely on this trailer then perhaps you are looking at it from the wrong perspective. It's apparent that the studio has tried to emphasize the "funny" bits but the overall tone of this trailer is quite dark. It does remind me of the film "Special" which was sold as a light comedy but turned out to be a quiet character study of a lonely, mentally ill man.
Atleast I have Zombieland to look forward to.
actually IMDB has it listed as a drama.
@jeremy wein: Yeah, definitely reminds me of Special. And if this is supposed to be a comedy it looks like its going to fail.
this looks just like special.
@Colin: Ya right on Colin, this is like the unfunny version of Blankman. Kinda makes me sad seeing good actors get roles like Zombieland and lose foresight and do crap like this movie. Kinda like Michael Sheen when he did Frost/Nixon and then you see him in Underworld???
looks interesting even when the trailer does not show enough the real drama of the lead character besides Woody is a great actor.
