Weekend Box-Office: 'Think Like a Man' Dominates with $33 Million Opening Weekend

Weekend box-office results for April 20-22, 2012 with Think Like a Man coming in at #1

It's always nice when the better film wins the weekend even if it means Laremy's streak of picking the #1 movie seven weeks straight has to come to an end. Think Like a Man was a monster this weekend, putting an end not only to Laremy's streak, but also The Hunger Games's streak... let's break it down.

Think Like a Man

$33 million from 2,015 theaters (1,140 fewer than The Lucky One) for a $16,377 per theater average on a reported $12 million budget. Now that is impressive. What else can I say?

Well, I guess I can say one thing... What is wrong with the critics that gave this a "rotten" rating at RottenTomatoes? Seriously, 50%? That is criminal. No, this isn't any kind of masterpiece, but it's undoubtedly fun so what gives?

As for reader predictions (because Laremy was wildly off), we have to give a standing ovation to Rob as he nailed this one with a $33 million prediction. It takes some fortitude to go that high. Kudos Rob and to those of you that put Think Like a Man at #1. Nice work.

RottenTomatoes Score: 50%
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 and his prediction of $14.4 million was $18.6m off for a percentage error of 56.36%.

2. The Lucky One

Then again, I guess I can take solace in the fact Think Like a Man is rated 29% higher than The Lucky One. If this had a higher critical rating I'm not sure there would be any saving the industry.

Laremy at least had the number right, he just sand-bagged on Think Like a Man and congrats go out to Athar for his nearly spot on prediction of $22.7 million.

Weekend: $22.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 21%
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 with $23 million, which is $0.2m off for a 0.88% error.

3. The Hunger Games

Over $550 million worldwide and it looks like Catching Fire finally has a director. Here's to hoping the sequel doesn't fall off track and can hopefully exceed the quality of the first film, though the early production woes won't have me holding my breath.

Weekend: $14.5 million (-31% drop) / Cume: $356.9 million / RottenTomatoes: 85%
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $15.6 million, which is $1.1m off for a 7.59% error.

4. Chimpanzee

People clearly are more interested in chimps than they are lions as Chimpanzee scores $4 million more than African Cats did a year ago.

Weekend: $10.2 million / RottenTomatoes: 77%
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $6.3 million, which is $3.9m off for a 38.24% error.

5. The Three Stooges

Made on a $30 million budget this one clearly has a lot of work to do. Green lighting this still baffles me.

Weekend: $9.2 million (-45.9% drop) / Cume: $29.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 45%
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $7.7 million, which is $1.5m off for a 16.3% error.

6. The Cabin in the Woods

A 47.6% drop after a weak opening isn't exactly what the doctor ordered. Made on an approximate budget of $25 million, this one will certainly have a life on DVD and Blu-ray.

Weekend: $7.7 million (-47.6% drop) / Cume: $26.9 million / RottenTomatoes: 91%
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $6.4 million, which is $1.3m off for a 16.88% error.

7. American Reunion

I almost forgot this movie was even made.

Weekend: $5.2 million (-50% drop) / Cume: $48.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 43%
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $5.7 million, which is $0.5m off for a 9.62% error.

8. Titanic

Titanic has now passed the $650 million mark. Break out the bubbly for the second highest grossing domestic release of all-time.

Weekend: $5 million (-58% drop) / Cume: $52.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 88%
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $8.9 million, which is $3.9m off for a 78% error.

9. 21 Jump Street

There are a lot of successes within this top ten and this is definitely one of them. A nearly four times multiplier comparing budget to worldwide take ($161.5 million) is what every film aspires to, but virtually none can achieve (because so many movies are terrible).

Weekend: $4.6 million (-29.2% drop) / Cume: $127 million / RottenTomatoes: 85%
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $4.3 million, which is $0.3m off for a 6.52% error.

10. Mirror Mirror

That $85 million budget is just crazy to me.

Weekend: $4.1 million (-39.7% drop) / Cume: $55.2 million / RottenTomatoes: 49%
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $4.6 million, which is $0.5m off for a 12.2% error.

Elsewhere, Kevin Macdonald's Marley documentary pulled in $260,000 from 42 theaters while the Weinstein's attempt to drum up controversy for Bully continues to fall flat as it made an estimated $505,000 this weekend from 263 theaters.

Next weekend sees a slew of new releases hitting theaters including The Five-Year Engagement, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Raven and Safe along with limited releases Bernie and Sound of My Voice. You picking any early favorites?

Very good overperformance for 'Think Like A Man' and that universal A cinemascore should help it hold well for the next couple weeks and maybe even stay at Number 1 next weekend.

My early thought would be the $20 million range for 'Five Year Engagement' so if it had a light decline 'Man' could repeat.

I'm surprised that Cabin actually declined less than 50% since last week the cinemascore was not good. I expected a heavier drop.

Crazy impressive numbers for Think Like a Man, and really for Chimpanzee too. Next weekend looks like garbage time except for The Five Year Engagement, which looks like it could be fun. It should be able to pull in around $20 million or so, so I guess it depends on how much Think Like a Man drops as to which one will win the weekend.

Just got back from seeing Cabin tonight. Great film. Sad to see it isn't clicking as nicely with audiences. Especially sad considering it will lead to less films like that being released. Ah wells.

There was absolutely nothing playing so I went to see "Think Like a Man" as well. Not that the movie itself wasn't enjoyable but I think that contributed to it weekend take.
