Woody Allen and Alfred Hitchcock in HD and Criterion Unleashes 'Godzilla' This Week on DVD and Blu-ray

Plus release dates for 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and 'The Muppets'

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: January 24, 2012

Woody Allen Blu-ray
Annie Hall and Manhattan
Woody Allen Blu-ray Manhattan Annie Hall
Are you more excited about Hitchcock coming to Blu-ray or a pair of classic Woody Allen features being released in high definition? For me the Woody films have a slight edge only because I love both Manhattan and Annie Hall and only love one of the Hitchcock films so it's just a matter of percentage points. While I haven't yet been able to sample any of the five releases between the two yet and can't give you first hand knowledge as to their quality, DVD Beaver's Gary Tooze calls the Manhattan release "absolutely gorgeous" which makes me want it right now.

I am expecting review copies of the two Woody films as well as the following Hitchcock Blus in the next few days so I'll be able to give them all a review and let you know which ones I think are worth your dollar soon enough.

Alfred Hitchcock Blu-rays
Notorious / Rebecca / Spellbound
Alfred Hitchcock Blu-rays Notorious Spellbound Rebecca
I have actually never seen Spellbound, but Rebecca is close to being my favorite Hitchcock film and may actually be my favorite and Notorious is solid as well, though I have only watched it once. Each is priced at Amazon at $16.99, which is a bit pricey in my opinion, especially considering they are coming out on the same day as the two Woody Allen films above from the exact same company. Why Fox felt it was necessary to release five classics all on the same day I will never know, but apparently they felt folks would jump at the chance to spend $85 in one day. Not me, especially considering the quality of the next title...

Godzilla (Criterion Collection)
Godzilla (Criterion Collection) on DVD Blu-ray today
I already reviewed Criterion's excellent presentation of the Japanese monster classic Godzilla, which you can read right here. The film looks excellent and the release is feature-rich. I highly recommend it and if you can manage to hold off and wait until the above titles go on sale, this is the release I would suggest for this week.

Paranormal Activity 3 (Unrated Director's Cut)
Paranormal Activity 3 (Unrated Director's Cut) on DVD Blu-ray today
I like this movie and I am a fan of the franchise, but I'm not really sure they are worth owning. I mean, how often will you watch them and do you really need to have the Paranormal Activity films at the ready? I did, however, see something interesting on the Playstation Network (never bought from there so have no idea how reliable it is) where they were offering all three films presented in chronological order. Not sure if that means they were editing together into one big feature entirely in chronological order or what, but that sounded interesting at the very least. Though, they were charging $25 which makes me say, "No thanks."

Wings
Wings on DVD Blu-ray today
It's only appropriate Paramount would release the first ever Best Picture winner for the first time on DVD and Blu-ray the same day as the 2012 Oscar nominations. I haven't yet watched the full movie, but it looks great considering its age and it's nice to know such a classic film can now be viewed at the ready.

I first watched Wings back in February 2011 as it was the final Best Picture winner I had never seen. As I said then, this isn't necessarily a film that will blow you away, but the film's influence on those that came after it was clearly evident. You can read more about my thoughts on the movie itself right here.

The Moment of Truth (Criterion Collection)
The Moment of Truth (Criterion Collection) on DVD Blu-ray today
I only managed to watch about 15 minutes of this last night before I simply had to get some sleep so I'd be ready for this morning's Oscar nomination announcement. That said, in those 15 minutes I did manage to see a bull trample a few people as well as that same bull stabbed through the top of the head, bled out and then dragged through the dirt. I have been warned this was a tough movie to watch and the scene I just described was real, not a fake animal, and I have no idea what to expect next.

Additionally, on the back of the box art Criterion says "it's perhaps the greatest bullfighting movie ever made." I have to wonder, how many bullfighting movies are there?

A favorite of many from 2011, but will you be picking it up? I predicted it would get a screenplay nomination this morning, but no such luck.

Some people liked this, it only made me increasingly mad as I watched. You can read my full review right here if you need further explanation.

The Whistleblower
The Whistleblower on DVD Blu-ray today
A solid performance from Rachel Weisz that could have been an Oscar contender had it been picked up by a larger studio, but the film itself doesn't match the performance.

Out of curiosity, how large is your DVD/blu ray collection, Brad?

When is Vertigo getting a pristine remastered hi-faluting Blu-ray release? - THAT's the Hitch film I'm most interested in.

I assume Rope probably won't get BR treatment.
