Sarah heads back to the caves

Neil Marshall's 2006 horror The Descent was phenomenal, one of the better horror films I have seen in a long time and probably a horror film I would place somewhere near the top of my personal horror best of list. However, the idea of a sequel seems a bit odd considering the fate of the girls from the first film, and I am never in favor of eking another story out just because audiences took to the first installment, but Descent 2 is coming and there is nothing you can do about it except to accept the fact, embrace it and hope it delivers.

Today we get our first look at the new film which is obviously working off the American ending and not the much bleaker UK version as Shauna Macdonald returns as Sarah and is forced to show the authorities just why she is covered in her friend's blood after escaping a cave filled with underground mutants. Something I would assume would be hard to convince anyone of.

While the idea of Sarah returning to the cave of hell is a bit silly, since I would rather be tossed in the insane asylum before ever going back there, the explanation works. As for my desire for this film, I hope it can capture the intensity of the original, which if you haven't seen you really must check out. From what I can tell from this international trailer there will be a nice bit of "close to drowning" claustrophobia that will hopefully equal the panicked moment in the first film and it looks like the gore has been ramped up a notch as this is obviously a slightly more unrated trailer than we will get domestically.

For now there is no domestic release date announced, but IMDb lists a June release for Belgium.

Hmmm…looks interesting. It did say she doesnt remember what happened down in the caves, so maybe thats how they get her to go back down.

That little close to drowning bit gave me chills, hopefully the whole movie will be like that, though it looks to be more brightly lit than the first.

Wow im surprised, that accually looks pretty good. While I did enjoy the first one I didnt really think it would be something they could pull off making a sequel for.

I'm impressed! Actually, this seems like a logical direction to take the sequel. I mean, they didn't do the usual thing and just send another random group of people down in the caves (ie, kids on spring break). This actually is doing what any good sequel should do and that's expand on the story. Plus, the fact that Juno is still alive down there makes the whole idea so infinitely more fascinating!

Oh and I'd also like to point out that while the original ending is bleak – it doesn't necessarily mean that Sarah didn't get out. I mean, it's a safe assumption, but it's not 100% certain. This sequel could follow both endings, in my opinion.

totally agree with Brandon's take on the ending.

    Not another one.
Why would they make a sequel to one of the worst movies of all time?
    Someone had to say it.
What is so good about a movie where literally nothing happens for half the movie, then they go down in a cave and find male and female cave monsters that look like Gollum from Lord Of the rings, and then proceed to do nothing again?
The scene with the girl who comes out of the blood is the only good part.
Otherwise, the first Descent movie was horrible.
Doomsday (also directed by Neil Marshall) was far superior.
And no people, Descent was not original.
Watch "The Cave" starring Cole Hauser and Lena Headey. It is much better, smarter, better looking, and starring two good actors. That movie should be getting a sequel, not this one.

^^ … 'Doomsday' was a terrible movie and was by no means 'far superior to Descent'. Maybe you were too scared to look at the screen while watching 'Descent'.

Agreed that the first half of Descent was a dead bore though … i hope they don't repeat that mistake in the sequel.

    @Seiko:
all I gotta say is to each his own. If you think Cave and Doomsday were better (both were awful) so be it :)

@adu: I wasn't actually saying Doomsday was such a wonderful movie. It just has the director relation and I feel it's far better.
Maybe I got a little carried way, but is is very hard for me to hate a film.

Using the American ending? Well that pretty much screws up any hope of this being worth anything. Too bad, I wasn't looking forward to it, but I was at least going to give it a chance until I read that.
