WB Tries to 'Sucker' You into Six Minutes of… Fun?
Some of them want to be abused
Nothing has been funnier than reading articles defending Sucker Punch, primarily because so many of the people defending it actually don't know what the film is about, or at least don't seem to based on what I'm reading. Kim Voynar's defense over at Movie City News is the only one I've read so far that actually does know what's going on during the video game fantasy sequences, which actually makes me even more confused as to how she can defend it… even "parts of it" for that matter.
Perhaps the worst offense though would be the combination of Scott Bowles's review at USA Today and the following first six minutes of the film. Not only does Bowles not understand the movie, but he's quoted — more or less out of context — in the following video saying, "You've never seen a movie like Sucker Punch." His review (if you can call it that) isn't necessarily a positive one.
Bowles's fourth-to-last-paragraph reads, "The secret to watching Sucker Punch, like most of Snyder's films, is to stop looking for reason. Punch is more interested in explosions than exposition." As much as I disliked Sucker Punch it pains me to see a critic asking for more exposition when he could just spend a little time thinking and get to the bottom of things.
People are combating the negative Sucker Punch reviews saying it's simply meant to be fun. They say this because there are explosions, guns, zombie armies, swords and more explosions. The Bowles side of the fence says it's just a video game movie because of these things and therefore lacks meaning. Problem is, inside of that "fun" and lack of "reason" is what very few have tapped into, the rape and abuse of young girls. The worst thing you can say about Sucker Punch is that it's not about anything, because that's not true.
Sucker Punch is bad because it's a poorly made film, not because it's aimed at the fanboy sect. One defense I read said to hate it for the right reasons, even though that person didn't even know what was going on. The right reason not to like Sucker Punch is not because it's an "homage to geekdom" as Bowles puts it, but because it's simply ineffective filmmaking that uses an assault of noise and CG to cover up its seedy reality.
With that rant over, here are the first six minutes of Sucker Punch as WB hopes you'll go support the film because now that you've seen it's Watchmen-esque musical opening you'll be enticed to see more. So now tell me… do you want to see Sucker Punch now? To be honest, I wouldn't blame you if you did. It does create a conversation, something bad movies can do just as well as good ones.
I'll say this, I will watch Snyder's "director's cut". I want to see if the terrible editing was a result of studio bumbling and I want to watch Babydoll's entrance at the mental hospital to check out a theory of mine regarding two people that were killed point blank during the latter stages of the film. It will be painful to watch again, but I'll do it in the name of research.

People shouldn't have to defend what movies they like. I haven't seen Sucker Punch, but based on what I have seen and my own tastes, I'm probably going to agree with the majority. But if people like it, they like it. It's that simple.
I'm not sure what your point is. No one is asking anyone to defend Sucker Punch.
People are writing defence pieces for the film, as you've pointed out, and I'm just saying they shouldn't have to.
Ahhh, okay, I thought you were insinuating that I felt people needed to defend the film or their reasons for liking it. I totally agree, people shouldn't have to defend it. However, it is more interesting when people give their reasons for not liking or liking something. I'm just frustrated when it comes to Sucker Punch, for some reason, so many of the people coming out in favor of the movie seem to be overlooking and/or misunderstanding the reality of the film.
You are looking too deep into the movie. It was not meant or expected to be a great or "deep" movie. It's just fun.
To each is own Brad but again I loved this movie, my fave flick of the year so far along with Battle: LA. Sucker Punch to me was so much fun, pretty original, visual effects are eye-catching, insane action & hot girls kicking butt. Pretty good acting from up and coming future stars: Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish & Jena Malone.
Though i'm upset Jamie Chung & Vanessa Hudgens weren't given a good script especially Vanessa who her recent film (not Beastly, before that), she gave a surprisingly good performance in a very underrated little-known flick Bandslam. I hate High School Musical, (I hate musicals, period) and i'm glad she's done doing that crap, she has the looks (obviously, she's gorgeous) and talent to become a good actress same with Jamie Chung who's also hot as hell.
Carla Gugino (who nailed the polish accent) & Oscar Isaac (Blue) did good here as well. I always respect your reviews & opinions, Brad and I respectfully disagree with the review you gave to this movie (though giving it an F is pretty harsh but it's your grade, I respect it), I just loved the hell out of this movie, it was FUN-TASTIC.
If that's the best part of the film, as many people are saying, then I'm not particularly interested in seeing the rest. I'm still not exactly sure how she killed her sister there, for that matter.
I'm sure I'll catch it on cable someday, but honestly I found that opening to be somewhat tedious.
I have not seen Sucker Punch at all so this is pretty much based off that start…….
1 – Yep, Snyder really does make cool music videos.
2 – The narration is terribly written.
3 – Did she kill her sister? How? The Bullet clearly went nowehere near her in that edit – Director's Cut clearup perhaps to come?
4 – A slow mo of a button? This isn't Watchmen and the yellow pin………….
5 – I suddenly now really DON'T believe all that cost only $82 million. I think there's some studio fudging there and we're looking at well over $100 million in actuality.
That said, I think I would watch it – but not in theatres. I think it's one that I would wait to catch the DC of. Assuming that both versions appear on it for comparison. If not, then I wouldn't be able to call a true opinion because I'll never have seen the theatrical cut.
Ah well, can't have it all ways.
As someone who loved the opening sequence in Watchmen and then found the rest of the movie to be really average, i really disliked the above video. It's a complete mess and to be honest I have even less desire to ever watch it than after reading Brad's review.
As a man whose lost all faith in "visionary" director Zack Snyder, I really don't want to watch those first 6 minutes. 300 was enjoyable, but my god there's only so much of slo-mo i can take. I've never been so worried about a Superman movie in my life.
Ricochet of the pipe. That's how her sister was killed.
Deeply flawed film, but it might be Snyder's most ambitious, most visually stunning.
I liked Sucker Punch. Much more than I expected. When I entered the cinema, I was thinking I was gonna hate it – and the first six minutes above were the worst part of it, in my opinion. I hated it. The excess of slow motion, the DRAMA, the look in her stepfather's face, the button… God it was awful.
But after that, I started to like the movie. There are so many elements together – samurais, robots, zombies, dragons, nazis – that it all became a fascinating mess. I understand everyone who hated it, but I didn't. If you ask me why I liked it, I'll probably be like the critics Brad mentioned and I won't have a logic explanation. But sometimes you like something for no logic reason, right? You just enjoy it. I enjoyed Sucker Punch; I thought the samurai scene was amazing (Björk!!); the ending surprised me. It is a mess of a movie, it is absurd and ridiculous, but it's also quite unique.
Also, this isn't the best part of the movie, the dream sequences are. They could have picked either of those. Anyways, again i'm one of the few that absolutley LOVED the movie.
You have stopped being different from other reviewers my friend….you're just too full of yourself now….zero objectivity…
I haven't seen Sucker Punch and have no desire to, but Brad, I don't understand why you say that the wrong reason to hate the movie is because it's misogynist. That seems like the right reason to hate it to me. There seem to be a number of good reasons to hate it, as your review suggested.
Good point, I didn't mean it to read that way, I was thinking more about the hate inspired by the fact it's aimed at fanboys as if that was a bad thing and lumped the two together. I will update it.
Although I've heard nothing but bad things about Sucker Punch, I am sorta curious. 1950s mental institutions, labotomies, etc., are really interesting.
The video posted is alright, but with the inclusion of "Sweet Dreams," it was just a let-down. The fan-boys are what's going to eventually ruin it for me.
Haven't seen it, won't watch the clip. I will watch the movie when comes out on blu ray via Netlix. It seems like it could be better than reviews indicate. It seems like it could have depth with the metaphoric reality. But I've got low expectations. I want it to be good, but I'm sure it won't be.
LOL at the different reviews shown at the end that fools people into watching this horrible mess.
