Okay peeps, more news on the Watchmen front. The fellow geeks over at AICN did a brief story on this kick-ass interview with 300 director Zack Snyder. Snyder spills some nice and juicy details. He says he's cast one actor but isn't allowed to say who yet. He also revealed that the script is 150 pages without the Tales of the Black Freighter subplot in the mix (which he reportedly is inserting back into the script). That would basically jack up the screenplay another 20 or so pages making this a possible 3-hour monster. Snyder admits, however, that is he isn't sure Warner Bros. wants a Lord of the Rings-type endeavor. He also states the film will be rated-R and that he "has a part for Gerry" (Gerard Butler).

If Butler comes aboard (he may be the secret guy that is already cast), could this be our Rorschach? I always imagined another actor in the vein of Ed Norton in the role but it wouldn't be the first time Butler had to don a mask (he did the same in Phantom of the Opera). I can see Butler playing the Comedian, though I'm not sure how much of his character will make it into the script.

You can watch the entire interview right here. It's pretty good stuff. I especially like the fact that he takes a swipe at Ghost Rider and X-Men 3. The fact that those two films didn't satisfy him is a good sign for us all.

With 300 hauling in another solid $30 mil in its second week, the prospects of a great Watchmen only increase. I'll always be a little skeptical that this project will actually happen since it's failed to get off the ground so many times, but we'll be "watching" this one very closely here at RopeofSilicon.

Zak Snyder is awesome. He's a visual masterist. I really think he'll become the George Lucas of right now. We'll see.

    >#1 Fan Of Watchmen. =D

  2. I think Snyder is great but something in me still wishes Paul Greengrass was attached. I thought he had the right sensibility for the project. Too bad the Paramount shakeup ruined that. I have faith in Zack, though.

Don't get me wrong. Greengrass is awesome, Flight 93 blew me away. Though, Look at 300. The artistic vision by Zak Snyder is phenominal. Since Watchmen is a Graphic novel.. =)

  4. Oh I'm sure Snyder has the visual look down pat. Watchmen is going to be a visual feast. I just thought when Greengrass was announced for the project…and the way he was speaking about it…it was clear he had the right sensibility for the project. Snyder will make a beautiful looking film, but he isn't as tested. His films are pure entertainment … no real weight behind them (not to criticize him) and even though Watchmen is a superhero graphic novel, it isn't Spiderman, X-Men or Batman (films he would be amazing at). It's bigger, a ton more complicated thematically and emotionally. I just thought Greengrass – or Arofonofsky who was also attached – were can't misses. Having said that, it doesn't mean Snyder isn't going to kick-ass on this thing and the fact that he wants to put the Tales From The Black Freighter subplot back in tells me he is interested in the film's subtext which is a VERY good thing. Let me put it this way, if he gets max potential from this story visually AND thematically … we are talking about Snyder as not the next Lucas…but the next Spielberg! :)
