UPDATED: Watch Two Trailers for 'Young Adult' Starring Charlize Theron
The last of the Oscar contenders is unveiled

UPDATE: I've added a second, "alternate" trailer for Young Adult courtesy of Slashfilm.
As far as I can tell this was the awards season film we had yet to see a trailer for as Paramount has debuted the first trailer for Jason Reitman's Young Adult, his latest collaboration with Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody starring Charlize Theron as Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt) who hasn't quite gotten over high school, either.
Check out the trailer directly below and leave your thoughts in the comments. I don't have this one ranked very high in my Best Picture predictions and I don't even have Theron in my top five Best Actress predictions. Should that change based on what you see here?
Young Adult hits theaters on December 9. You can watch the trailer in high definition right here.

I am sure the movie will be good but I wasn't too impressed with the trailer.
Hmm…Theron channels the bitch a la Cameron Diaz in bad teacher…but I like her much more than Diaz….and with Reitman directing, this cud have wit , humor & the necessary bite such a story must have….Diablo Cody is kinda hit or miss for me though ….
Hard to know what to make of the trailer…I am quite intrigued though.
In my books reitman has yet to make a misstep and this doesnt look like it either.. love Charlize Theron and Adore Patrick wilson this looks like it could actually be quite good!
I'm predicting Elizabeth Reaser – best supporting actress! if it hits with the Academy – she's the likable character trying to keep her man ( is she pregnant in the movie too? they say 'baby on the way' but they already have one so..? the scene where Elizabeth spills on Charlize looks like it will be a good ole' catfight.
I was looking forward to this, but I'm actually left a little cold by the trailer.
I liked Juno and Up in The Air from Reitman but could never get into Thank You For Smoking.
My early feel is that this won't be troubling the Oscars much but then Reitman's last couple of features scored pretty well on the nominations front so this could be a case of underwhelming trailer masking a solid film.
Or not.
Am I the only one who immediately thought that Charlize Theron's character is essentially Sweet Dee from Always Sunny? I mean, this is EXACTLY something she would do (and I think has sort of done) on Always Sunny.
Big Charlize, Reitman and Cody fan so am looking forward to it, but gee Charlize's character seems incredibly unlikeable from the trailer, so it will be interesting to see how that goes over with the audience.
This looks dark and funny and full of layers…. I'm betting this trailer only touches the surface. Charlize looks absolutely insane and Patton Oswalt is one I can't wait for. He's on my list for best supporting actor…. I'm feeling this one big time. Reitman is a genius and his Oscar track record is damn impressive. and this one doesn't feel like Juno which is a good thing — glad to see Cody and Reitman exploring new, darker territory. Count me in.
It's not an alternate trailer. They're exactly the same.
Looking forward to this. HUGE fan of Reitman's work. Not to mention Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswald are two incredibly underrated actors.
I must say that I REALLY dig the dark, dry, unapologetic vibe I get from the humor in this trailer. It DEFFIANTELY looks like new, darker material for both Reitman and Cody. I didn't find myself liking Theron's character immidiately, but that's what I loved about "Up In The Air". I didn't think I'd end up liking George Clooney's Character, but I did. That's why I love Reitman's movies. As for a BP nomination, this doesn't exactally scream "Oscar". I DO think that Patton Oswalt and Elizibeth Reaser will snag nominations
Based on that trailer, I can tell it's a film.
This looks to me to be a step backwards for Reitman. It feels juvenile, depressing, sad and soulless. I am not the best judge though as I have always had a hard time with his films look. He doesn't light his actors well, there is no remarkable photography and doesn't allow enough breath between beats. Highly overrated because of his pedigree. Did you see the reaction on his face when he didn't win Director for UITA? Like a spoiled child.
Is he trying to gender switch Clooney's Up in the Air performance with this one? Not interested. Not because I have a problem with a female in that kind of role, but what made Clooney's character likable was his scene partner Farmiga. I see no evidence of that archetype here.
From the looks of this trailer, seems like a one dimensional character without a heart. How bout some smart well rounded rolls for women? Sadly this was created by a woman.
I love that prior to the release of this trailer, that based on previous accolades, Reitman and Theron would be nominated in their respective categories. After seeing this trailer and reading these and many other posts, I believe the collective will recognize that this is not an Oscar film.
Good luck though. I am sure there is an audience to be found in the Bad Teacher/Bridesmaids world…
