I'm seeing Clint Eastwood's Hereafter this Saturday here in Toronto so I'm not going to watch this trailer in advance, but I am extremely curious to hear your reactions.
The film was written by Peter Morgan (The Queen) and stars Matt Damon, Cecile De France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Jay Mohr and Bryce Dallas Howard. Based on the synopsis it sounds like some sort of supernatural version of Crash. Apple is hosting the HD version of the trailer and classify the film as a thriller, while Warner Bros. told me to refer to it as a drama.
Watch the trailer and read the synopsis and tell me what kind of vibe you're getting. The film hits theaters on October 22.
Hereafter tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. Matt Damon stars as George, a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cécile de France), a French journalist, has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus (Frankie/George McLaren), a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each on a path in search of the truth, their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe might — or must — exist in the hereafter.

Looks absolutely fantastic. If it doesn't get a BP nomination I will be surprised.
Wow I have to agree. I didn't know what to think from the synopsis, but the trailer has made me a believer
Yeah, that looks pretty powerful. It's exciting to see Cecile de France in such a high-profile role. She was fantastic in High Tension and Mesrine.
It looks like an amazing movie and another classic form Clint Eastwood. I know that I will definitely be checking this movie out when it hits theaters.
Interesting to see Eastwood tackle a story like this. Kind of out of his box but in a good way. It's definitely peaked my interest.
Hmmm, wouldn't say it looks amazing. I'm on the fence on this one. Could go either way.
A lot of different elements to the story. It would be really easy for the director to loose grip and make just a cheesy movie. But it is Clint Eastwood directing, so… If he manage to make this story work, then he is going to be in a whole new level as a director.
Wow!! I've been interested in seeing a trailer for this for a while, but I never expected Eastwood to pull off something like that. This could easily turn into one of my highlights of 2010.
Quite honestly after reading the script I expected something less. This looks very good. Thank God summer's over.
I can't say I feel the same way as the rest of you. It's visually interesting and the acting seems amazing, but I get this feeling that this one's not all that great. I guess we'll just have to see when the reviews from Toronto come out.
It looks amazing! I'm having a hard time thinking of anything to compare it to, though. doesn't really look like a typical Eastwood movie (it appears to have a more complicated plot than some of his other films), but it still looks great. If I had to make a comparison I would say it seems a little like the Sixth Sense meets Babel with a little optimism thrown into the mix.
I was with it until the really bad CG, which took me out of it. I was hoping this would be a smaller film without the need for big effects, but now that I know what it is, I still think it could be good. Matt Damon's character looks interesting.
Where was the "really bad CG"? I'm Just curious, not trying to talk bad about your opinion, I just didn't see any part that had really bad CG. Unless you are talking about the huge wave, which looked fine to me… I never judge effects from the trailer of a film… because sometimes they have not completely finished the effects before the trailer gets cut.
Overall though, I think this film looks really good, I can't wait to see it!
Yeah the huge wave looked terrible to me. There's always a chance it'll look better in the finished film, but personally I'm getting tired of movies relying on CG, in my opinion it's becoming a major crutch that I wish filmmakers wouldn't use so liberally.
I'm still going to see the film, hell I see every Eastwood flick, but I'm exercising cautious optimism from this point on because the trailer didn't completely sell me (and not just because of the CG).
I kind of agree with you, but it seems like the same level of CG in Invictus, it didn't really take away from the story for me so I'm not really put off by it.
If your calling the huge wave bad CG, then I disagree with you. I've seen footage of an actual tsunami and it looks almost exactly like it did in the trailer.
Contrary to those declaring that Hereafter doesn't look/feel like a typical Eastwood movie whatever THAT might be (Bird? Letters from Iwo Jima? Bronco Billy? Gran Torino? The Outlaw Josey Wales? Changeling? Breezy?) I think this both looks & feels very much like an Eastwood movie. There's a tenderness to it that's juxtaposed with Eastwood's look-em-straight-in-the-eye approach to tough material that is both scary & touching & more than a a little exciting.
If there's anything different it's perhaps more to do with what looks like generic horror moments although we already know that the film is far more spiritual in tone than it is supernatural. The Sixth Sense this ain't. Anyway, all by way of saying the trailer impressed the heck out of me! Mr Eastwood, it looks like you just might have done it again. I can't wait to see this.
What I meant by a typical Eastwood film was a simpler plot based mainly around one protagonist. I didn't mean that I thought his films fit into a particular genre, which they clearly don't. This movie appears to have interweaving plots, and some supernatural elements, neither of which have I seen from Eastwood before. That's all I meant. And I don't think this seems much like the sixth sense, either. I said I was having trouble thinking of comparisons.
I'm reserving judgement 'till I see the film, but the script was awfully disappointing. Maybe I read it with the wrong expectations.
But I will say that they made it far more melodramatic than the actual writing was.
It's a real shame that Mr. Eastwood would take on a project centered around a subject matter as shameful as a "psychic."
The last thing the world needs is another reason to believe in such nonsense.
This looks excellent and I'm really looking forward to it. Glad to see Eastwood tackling a new subject matter.
It looks like a Christopher Nolan film. Hopefully the Academy doesn't pass on Eastwood again this year. Gran Torino and Invictus were great films.
Clint Eastwood always comes through with great stories. I'll definetely see this.
It looks very good, very powerful stuff, but I expect nothing less from Eastwood now.
The trailer did not put it on 'must see' territory for me, and I'm somewhat mixed on Eastwood's output as a director, but overall I expect I will go and see it.
Actually I found the wave moment quite impactful – it looked indistinguishable to me from footage from a documentary I saw last year about the 2004 Asian tsunami and equally frightening. I don't know if the film will actually make it that event or just represent the kind of seismic natural catastrophe that some people experience in their lives.
This looks fantastic. can't wait!
Looks good. But when are the trailers for The Fighter and True Grit gonna come out.
Looks interesting. I am looking forward to your review, Brad.
It has my attention.
