Wow, I have to say, the music, the imagery and just the overall editing of this first trailer for My Week with Marilyn has won me over already. I try not to watch too many trailers but I didn't want to just regurgitate the same commentary again saying Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh are vying for Oscars with their respective portrayals of Marilyn Monroe and Sir Laurence Olivier so I decided to watch and … again … WOW! I loved it.

Based on a true story, My Week with Marilyn depicts one week in the life of Marilyn Monroe, which she spends with 23 year-old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), an assistant to Olivier who is directing Monroe's latest film, The Prince and the Showgirl. The film focuses on the time Clark spent with Monroe when her new husband, the playwright Arthur Miller, leaves England and Colin is able to introduce Marilyn to some of the pleasures of British life. The film co-stars Dougray Scott as Arthur Miller, Julia Ormond as Vivien Leigh (Olivier's wife), Judi Dench as Dame Sybil Thorndike, and Dominic Cooper, Toby Jones, Emma Watson and Derek Jacobi.

Watching the trailer I can't say I get a particular feel for Williams' performance or Branagh's for that matter, the latter of which is sort of pushed to the side in this particular trailer, left only to snarl on screen a few times.

Instead, the music and the story are what's being sold here, which is to say if you thought the trailers for War Horse and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close were selling Oscar contenders (I wouldn't know, I didn't watch either of those), I'd say this trailer is selling a movie through and through.

My favorite pieces of the trailer are Ben Smithard's photography and that final line… "Shall I be her?" Perfect.

My Week with Marilyn will play the New York Film Festival this Sunday, October 9, the Mill Valley Film Festival two days later and the Chicago International Film Festival a day after that before finally hitting theaters on November 4. Give the trailer a watch and browse a selection of images I've collected below and tell me what you think. Obviously… I'm sold.

I agree with you Brad, this looks seriously impressive. Gorgeous imagery and music, but it also seems to have a compelling story, which I didn't get from the War Horse or Extremely Loud trailers. With the story and the Weinsteins behind it, this should hopefully be able to expand out relatively wide.

  2. Michelle Williams reminds me of Carey Mulligan a bit in this one.

  3. Brady

Brad, we were thinking the same thing about that last line. I heard it and I just immediately had thoughts bouncing around in my head. It actually reminded me a lot of Lady GaGa and the persona she wears in the public's eye, and how much pressure that is for someone.

  4. Daniel

Looks amazing, Michelle Williams shoots to the top of my list of Lead Actress.

  5. Oscar.. oscar.. oscar!!!!

Now this is the movie that I like.. so much glitter, yet so much sorrow! Reminds me a lot to All That Jazz!

Nice piece Mr Brevet (as always). Williams has to be a front runner.

  7. Lisa

With you all. Totally sold. This trailer has only increased my interest.

  8. Was not as taken with it as it seems the rest of the commenters were, still find it hard to perceive Williams as Monroe but I guess I'm just tired of "Oscar this!" and "Oscar that!" being shouted at every prestige picture that gets a trailer at the moment.

Wow, Branagh has decided to play Laurence Olivier as Ken Branagh. I would have at least thought he would have done something to his voice.

This looks poor. How is this even a story, again? A guy gets involved with Marilyn Monroe, and then realises that he can't, and then… she goes back home?

I agree with you completely, Brad. This looks INCREADIBLE. Michelle Williams is a shoe-in for an Oscar.

  11. Allie

Love it. Michelle, once again, does not disappoint.

  12. Looks very good indeed.

I've seen a few Marilyn Monroe biopics (mostly tv) and all of them use this 'Marilyn Monroe vs Norma Jeane' drama the last line implies. I hope this movie does this creatively, because it's been done to death already.

Marilyn Monroe is a very complicated character to portray, I guess, and Michelle Williams seems incredibly confortable in it.

Looks really good and I have a feeling because it involves a Hollywood icon and London, the Academy well eat it up. Nothing gets the Academy more hard than something British.

  14. cobb salad

    This looks fantastic.

  15. MWHollywood85

    what a tragic figure.

  16. Winchester

This looks of real interest, so I shall keep it on my radar when it's released.

Williams should likely end up in Oscar contention. The combination of playing a real Hollywood Legend, the Weinstein's power and the period angle all combine to make it likely look quite appealing to the process.

  17. MARION57

the oscar race in the best actress category´s gonna be between her and Meryl Streep.

This is hardly a "True Story", dig a little deeper and its hard to find ONE person other than the guy in question who can back up this story. Also didn't like the scene where he sees here sans make-up and she says something about her horrible face, and she looks fine. PLENTY of people saw MM looking entirely UN-glamorous and I hope they will portray this MM as well.

For a good read on MM check out Sarah Churchwell's "The Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe".
