It's been five years and the wait is almost over

It was my #7 most anticipated film of 2009 and now we have an international teaser trailer for Alejandro Amenbar's (The Others and The Sea Inside) Agora starring Rachel Weisz as the legendary astronomer Hypatia, trapped in the legendary Library of Alexandria, and tells the story of her fight to save the old world’s wisdom from the religious riots sweeping the streets of Alexandria.

This is Amenabar's first theatrical feature since the Oscar-winning The Sea Inside in 2004. And as I said in my most anticipated of 2009 column, "Five years is a long time to wait."

Check out the trailer below, which was found on YouTube.

That looks epic. Is it foreign language?

  2. Is Rachel Weisz about to have a really big year in 2009? She's certainly working with two very interesting directors. She's also in Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bone". Double nominee, anyone?

It's in English. I think the trailer, though, is made for some Spanish-speaking country. i.e., it isn't showing in U.S. theaters. I can't wait for the movie! This will be Amenabar's first epic!

Wow! That's all I'm gonna say. Well, okay, so I'll say a little bit more. This film looks really spectacular; however, since Gladiator in 2000, the sword and sandle epic wasn't exactly produced great films – unless of course one considers Troy, Alexander and Kingdom of Heaven to be great.

Still, I'll remain hopeful for this film to do some nice resurrecting of the genre.

The philosopher and mathematic Hypatia, was also big form of her season with her wild murder from the patriarch of Alexandria Cyrille, became the hero of later antiquity. For this murder, the christianity still has not apologized from the humanity!
The murder of Hypatia is completely confirmed and is not suseptible of no contestation. Hopes also Amenabar it respects completely the historical sources, even if already it has fallen in the first historical inaccuracy, placing her death 25 years before!

Wow! It appears there are a number of historical opinions as to how Hypatia died, by whose's hands and who is to blame. Indeed, the truth is that written by those who win in any period of history and not necessarily – or often – anything else. The film industry is not any different from historians. We should celebrate Amenabar's attempt to bring this subject to the forefront and look forward to seeing the film soon! Does anyone know when it will air on cinemas?
