I have been pruning my 2015 Oscar predictions lately and I almost removed Stephen Daldry's Trash from my Best Picture predictions... good thing I didn't as the first trailer for the film has been released suggesting we're likely to hear it announced as part of one of the upcoming fall film festivals if not several. Given this version comes from Universal Brazil (where the film actually opens in October) it doesn't exactly give us an idea of where it might show up though as part of tomorrow's announcement of the first wave of Toronto Film Festival features would be a good guess.

The film, which stars Rooney Mara, follows three boys in a third world country who scrape a living by picking through trash. One day they find a leather bag, the contents of which plunge them into a terrifying adventure, pitting their wits against corruption and authority to right a wrong. Martin Sheen and Wagner Moura co-star.

Daldry is a director whose films are almost reserved a spot on the Best Picture list just as he is a consistent fixture among the Best Director nominees. Universal has yet to set a domestic release date for the film, but should it have a good festival showing then expect that to change rather quickly.

Check out the trailer below.

Moura is one of Brazil's best actors. I'm excited to see him in another movie.

  • JN Films

Daldry's last two were very disappointing, but this seems different, which is kinda good.

  • PJ Edwards

That was not at all what i was expecting. Whoa.

  • m1

This looks really good. Hopefully the actual movie will not live up to its title.

    • Kingsley_Zissou

Same. We can fight it out later.

  • yrabadi

Well I didn't understand much, but this looks epic.

  • Ron Oneal Fresh

Seems like Mara and Sheen are supporting characters in this mostly foreign language film. Interesting.

  • Heath Cowart

Reminds me a lot of City of God but in a really good way. Can't wait to see it!

  • Jordan B.

I'm in the bag for anything with Roons.

  • andyluvsfilms

    Looks ok, nothing fancy.

  • AdamsLostApple

This film doesn't really remind me of any of Daldry's films which is not a bad thing. I love The Hours, and The Reader less so, but I'm hopeful this is a good change of pace.

  • Alex Feinstein

well i guess you can take rooney mara off the list for best actress

  • Sandy

" City of God" is the master piece of this kind of film. In the best lists of the better films of all time, that Fernando Meirelles films is in. If you havenĀ“t seen it yet, you should...Amazing!
