The first full, official trailer for Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac has released and to no surprise it looks like a Lars von Trier film. While the explicit nature of the film is sure to rouse the most attention, there clearly is a storyline here and it could prove to be fascinating, though talk of a five-and-a-half-hour cut does seem to be pushing the boundaries of what an audience may be able to take given the snippets we see here.

Nymphomaniac tells the story of self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), from birth to the age of 50. On a cold winter's evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman (Stellan SkarsgÄrd), finds Joe beaten up in an alley. He brings her home to his flat where he cares for her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-out and multi faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents.

The film co-stars Stacy Martin (as young Joe), Shia Labeouf, Jamie Bell, Connie Nielsen, Mia Goth, Jens Albinus, Severin von Hoensbroech, Uma Thurman, Peter Gilberg Cotton, Nicolas Bro, Tabea Tarbiat, Janine Romanowski, Jesper Christensen, Tania Carlin, Felicity Gilbert and Shanti Roney.

Nymphomaniac hits theaters in Denmark and Norway on Christmas Day and a January opening in France is currently planned. Magnolia holds the U.S. rights, but has yet to announce an official date.

Watch the trailer below, but be warned, this is very not safe for work and contains considerably explicit images.

Goddamn right i'm watching this, looks fantastic.

I'll admit it looks good, yet I agree with you Brad, a 5 hour cut may be a little much, judging by what's presented here.

  • Eli Sickel

You almost wish Von Trier would split it up into "The Hobbit" sized chunks, but as long as there's an intermission I can totally stand watching this in theaters. Already super excited for all the movies next year.

    • Ian

Yeah I think an intermission would be an imperative for something this long.

Just watched von Trie'r's Antichrist a few days ago. My first film by the director. It was very weird and bizzare. I did like the overall feel of the movie's cinematography but the movie itself is just too out there for me. Still interested in this though, I don't care what type of movie it is but 5 hours is just way too long for any movie.

Check out Dancer in the Dark, Breaking the Waves and Europa.

Thanks for the suggestions, Brad. Will check it out soon.

Don't forget Dogville - his best, IMO.

My favorite is still the hard-to-find The Kingdom (aka Riget) and its sequel, Riget II. Please avoid Stephen King's ruinous remake, Kingdom Hospital. The original was bizarre and creepy, but balanced with a lot of humor. Not as bleak as some of his later work.

It looks like i'm going to have to be the downer here. This looks just plain awful. His last two films, Melancholia and Anti Christ, were pretentious from the start and were only salvaged by some good cinematography and decent performances. I just dont get the love for Lars.

If I want something that is A)foreign B)strange and C)weird, but D)still thought provoking I will stick with Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives or Dogtooth.

  • Hello Kitty

Is that the fox from Anti-Christ? If so, then all I have to say is "earth abides."

  • Lupita Nyong’o

I think Jamie Bell is incredibly hot!!

I like the part when cum drips out her mouth. She was like, "wow thats a lot of cum."

Also like the () in the title. Its like a vagina. And its called Nymphomaniac! GET IT. CUM ONE CUM ALL. CUM DRIP OUT YO MOUTH.

Definitely intriguing. I have a little trouble with Lars Von Trier because he seems to be explicit for little to no reason sometimes. He's still a very interesting filmmaker.
