Last night I think we were all a little surprised with the announcement Ben Affleck would star as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Zack Snyder's Batman vs. Superman (aka Man of Steel 2) movie and while we knew the plan was to release the film in 2015, Warner Bros. has now officially announced a July 17, 2015 release for the film.

Henry Cavill will again play Superman (aka Clark Kent) in the sequel alongside fellow returning Man of Steel stars Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne. David S. Goyer will again write the script.

The July release date positions the film two weeks after Independence Day 2, one week after Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and a week ahead of the planned release of The Smurfs 3.

The nearest superhero release currently on the schedule is the May 1 release of The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Given how The Smurfs 2 is currently performing the third film (if it actually ends up made and released) shouldn't be much competition. So that's out of the conversation as a threat to the others I think.

Independence Day 2 (again, if it actually is a goer as I haven't read anything yet about scripts, casting, start dates etc) is a wildcard so long after the first film, and Pirates 5 is on the decline anyway in the US. It does give The Avengers 2 plenty of room to breathe as it's going to be released in the May.

I don't actually think that date is too problematic at this point in time, for those interested in it.

In terms of positioning it's smart. I think Avengers 2 will be massive as it is first out of the gate but keeping a good 11 week gap between Avengers and Man of Steel 2 offsets any short term superhero fatigue. I don't envisage ID2 being massive and I think that the Pirates franchise may finally be on the decline.

If I were Disney I would move PoC5 to maybe 2-3 weeks before Avengers 2 to kind of kick of the summer movie season and to have 2 straight hit films. Or maybe move it to June. That's when the last one came out and it ended up making over a billion dollars.

Thank god they are releasing it two months after Avengers 2. I predict both to be billion dollar movies.

But 2015 is going to be crazy.

Not at all surprising given the dates of the Dark Knight films. Disney will have to move Pirates now though, or that movie will get absolutely eviscerated. Or maybe their ego is so huge they think it will perform well there anyway. Also remember that if Star Wars makes 2015 it's pretty much guaranteed to open May 22.

I still think that Disney will move Star Wars to 2016. They will be pretty crazy/ambitious to open Pirates, Avengers and Star Wars in a three month window.

I think it's very possible one of them moves to 2016; it just depends on how desperate they are to start selling Star Wars toys. They should realize though that part of the reason The Avengers was so big is that there really wasn't a huge amount of competition for the first month-plus of its release. The next movie that actually inspired much conversation was Prometheus which was five weeks later and rated R. Opening Star Wars three weeks after The Avengers pretty much guaranteed it won't make another $600 million / $1.5 billion. But every Star Wars movie has opened in May and I can't see then breaking that tradition. They options for Pirates are more varied; they could shift it to early June (or even later May) if Star Wars isn't there, or maybe to the end of July after Batman/Superman has opened huge and dropped 70%. Honestly though I think their ego is so big that they'll go ahead with things as is and put Star Wars on May 22. But maybe that's a good thing for actual cinema; I'm all for these overblown commercials grossing less than their (outlandish) expectations.

Devin Faraci posted a story last week that Disney is seriously considering moving Episode VII to December 2015. Remember at D23, they remained steadfast and said it was coming in 2015. They just didn't specify when.

I thought I saw a quote where they said summer 2015 but I could be mistaken.

I am very curious how this will stack up at the box office compared to Avengers and Star Wars. I sense the anticipation is high. If this is good and word of mouth gets out, I could see this winning the year.

ID2 is a curious one, 18 years after the first one and sandwiched between some monster films it'll be interesting to see how it does. It's also surprising that Smith isn't in it despite his track record of appearing in sequels.

They say they're reinventing the character. I bet they're gonna opt for a Tony Stark like character...and it will utterly fail.

Shockingly it's on the day of my birthday so I might see it on midnight!!!!! I am pretty excited for the film

I am already getting superhero news fatigue

My god, what a summer 2015 is going to be! An Avengers, Superman, Batman and Star Wars movie in the same summer? My head is about to explode. I haven't been this excited since 2003 when I got a Lord of the Rings film and two Matrix films all in the same year.

    Thems the facts

Dates dates dates. Isn't the world already screwed up enough and the US close to another Civil War that to see a movie about two revered superhero characters at opposites with each other seem a little overkill? Henry Cavil was a great Superman; it just seems that whomever revives the franchise immediately wants to kill it with stupid ideas, and Batman vs. Superman is the stupidest one yet (altho Transformers 4 looks awful, just pathetic). Oh well, Karma I guess. So long Superman. What a cynical world we live in. Why don't the studios get together and make "America: the Worst, Most Cynical Demise of a Once Great Light of Freedom" so we can all get over this cynical dark trend in movies. I bet the world-wide grosses would be astronomical. Superman was always a light in the world for this once-great once-Free country. He represented our better selves - not the out-for-revenge killer who managed to destroy half of Metropolis for almost a half hour of the ending of the last film. Will there be an option to delete all that death and destruction in the movie once it comes out on DVD? The movie should have been rated R for that. You are supposed to suspend disbelief when you are watching a movie, right? SO there must have been hundreds or thousands of people killed in that last 30 minutes or so.
Disturbing. Distressing. NOT for children (or adults) who still Believe.
