Wanna Know How 'Paranormal Activity' Originally Ended?
It's actually quite cool...
It shouldn't take even a four-year-old to figure this out, but I will say it anyway… This article contains spoilers related to the ending of Paranormal Activity, if you have not yet seen the film and don't want to know anything about the ending then move along and wait until after you've seen it. Otherwise, enjoy.
The news comes from Horror Squad, which has obtained the details regarding the original cut of Paranormal Activity, the indie horror that is currently sweeping the nation and prepping for its first wave of wide release this coming Friday, October 16.
For those that have already seen the movie you will remember the ending follows Micah's trip down the stairs as we hear Katie screaming in what is assumed to be the living room. There are some loud noises, followed by silence and then the steps that begin pounding up the stairs just before Micah's body is abruptly thrust into the camera lens and we see Katie's bloody body standing in the doorway. It's an absolutely fantastic ending that's followed by telling us Micah's body was found shortly thereafter, but Katie was not seen again. However, when the film first began making the rounds in 2007 things were a bit different.
Here's the original ending as detailed by Horror Squad's William Goss:
This time, Micah stays downstairs as Katie returns to the bedroom, covered in blood and now holding a knife. She proceeds to rock on the floor next to the bed for something like two days straight. We hear a friend (the girl who offered that Katie stay at her place, I'm guessing) leave a message on their answering machine, wondering where they are. She later stops by, presumably finds Micah dead downstairs, screams and leaves. The police then show up later, with Katie only awakening from her catatonic state as they come up the stairs, with guns drawn. She's covered in blood, holding a knife and very confused as to what's going on, and so the officers proceed to fire on her. The title card then dedicates the film to the couple's memory.
Based on this description alone I personally enjoy the current ending a little better because I like the idea of Katie being out there still possessed by the ghost — even though this one has a definite creepy factor to it. Perhaps it would have been cool if after Katie threw Micah's body at the camera, she had walked in and sat down in a catatonic/possessed state for two days before going over to inspect Micah's body, as she does now, and disappearing forever. I don't know, just an idea.
Director Oren Peli suggests we may still see this original ending once it hits DVD, and if it does I hope they offer it as an alternative cut of the film and not as a deleted scene. It's always better to see alternate endings in context and not as standalones.
For those that have seen it, what do you think? Do you think this ending would have been better? Goss has a few more differences in the film if you are interested, just click here.
As for my mention of the film's upcoming expansion on October 16, Shock Til You Drop adds more to the story saying Paramount plans to go into another 1000 theaters on October 23, but speculates this weekend's $7.1 million dollar return from 159 theaters may encourage the studio to add that extra thousand theaters on the October 16 instead. I actually hope they hold off a little longer to create a true test of horror on October 23 which is when Lionsgate releases Saw VI. Now wouldn't that be an interesting match-up?
I would say since The Blair Witch Project, Saw was the first small-time/indie horror film to even come close to moving the dial (unless you can think of another I am forgetting), but even still, its $55 million is puny in comparison to Blair Witch's $140m. Paranormal Activity currently sits at $8.2 million… how high do you think it will go? Can it catch up to Blair Witch?

I was honestly deeply affected by this film, and just reading this article, the descriptions of the ending has sent chills down my spine. I can't even imagine watching this alone in my bedroom late at night. All that aside, I prefer the original ending. I like the idea of her still being out there, plus I liked the isolation factor of the entire story. The film felt claustrophobic, and I think the way it ended really gave the feeling that there is no hope. I would like to see this original ending at some point though.
NOTE: Also I felt as though the demon was almost friends with Katie, and would not want her to be killed by police. I feel like it wanted to kill Micah, so it could have her body all to itself.
Just typing that once again gave me chills.
I have those same feelings.
I might be a little scared but I have something like visions of katie standing over my bed staring at me.
That gives me shivers.
I agree with the thing about the demon being friends with Katie because in the movie when Micah is doing the voice feed thingy and there is a growel like the demon was angry with him and then it ends up killing him because of the things that Micah said.
that movie was cool, nothing better than a scary movie. Im a remote viewer and i could sense the bulls*#t though, sorry people. Remote viewing reveals all….
just one question that no one seems to be saying if it is true then who was changing the tapes out cause one tape would not last for a hole day let alone 2 so it all has to be fake with a true story somewhere to base it on but for the most part blowen way out of what truly happened good try tho some of us just aint that stupid and then some will believe anything
It is based on a true story.
My son and I watched it this weekend and we discussed the ending multiple times. The timing of the screens, the silence and the walking up the stairs all really creeped us out. I like the ending as it is, for the same reason given in the article.
From a technical standpoint, I would have had a problem with the original ending. When the camera was on the tripod, the laptop did all the video capture via firewire – which takes up massive amounts of disk space. A laptop would have nowhere near the amount of space available to capture for 2 days straight.
Okay, I know I am being a little picky on that.
As an aside, this movie will stay with you for a while. Last night I was tossing and turning in bed and realized my foot was hanging over the side of the bed. That didn't last long.
this paranormal is just like a story that the couples live together then afterawhile they hear some noise but it's like something scraching on walls so i realize that the paranormal is the bast movie
Fantastic. I too am glad they kept the ending they did, although I wouldn't mind them putting the original on the dvd as an extra – just to see it. This movie was really good in its scare factor – the wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed it.
wait im confussed the originail ending is were she thros him at the camera right or wrong????im sooooo very confussed
i also just noticed this but if you watch the original trailer here…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4dXTG6fIk8, there looks to be a shot from the original ending at 1:07.
i was really happy with how it ended, granted I would've shit my pants if the shot of Micah being thrown at the camera hadn't been in the trailer and completely unexpected. Like if i didnt know it was coming at some point.
I think the current ending is much more effective. Micah being thrown at the camera and then the heavy footsteps and Katie coming in all bloody! Yuck! I think the creep factor intesifies when she's crawiling around with her elbows sticking out and sniffing at his body. So gross and scary, especially the very last second when she….oh, can't even think about it, it gives me goosebumps. So the alternated ending would not have produced such an effect. They were right to end it that way. And I agree with JAB. It would have been much freakier if they hadn't shown Micah being thrown at the camera in the trailer.
The current ending is by far the best. The thought of Katie still out there is much more creepy. Personally, I think Katie is the demon… not just possessed by the demon, but IS the demon. Why else did that girl Dianne go through the exact same things as she did? Because Dianne was the demon, and then Dianne died (remember Dianne lived in the 60's or 70's), and the demon became Katie.
I think the demon was after Micah the whole time and not Katie. It just tricked him into thinking it was after Katie, so as to catch him off guard. Then at the end Katie disappears forever and probably changes form and haunts someone else. Tada.
At least, that's what I think. And I think that's what would make it the scariest.
I have not seen this movie and I have no intentions of watching it. The commercials and previews alone give me the creeps. This movies ranks up there with Ju-On (the original Grudge – Japanese version). Since seeing the commercial I have not been able to sleep without having the scenes replying over and over in my head. I wake up early (3:30 a.m.) to go to the gym and I'm just rushing to get dressed get in my car and go. I know it's a just a movies, but it messes with your psyche.
I truly enjoyed this film.. I was jumping out of my seat and covering my eyes.. It did it for me.. I love scary films.. this one really did for me..It was soooo Creepy; funny thing I had a hard time falling sleep that night.. I kept seeing images in my mind.. Insane.. !
I think the current ending is the better of the two. To have the police come in and shoot her (for holding a knife???) is kind of a cop-out. The only thing I would have changed about the ending it has now is the stupid demon face at the end. We get it, she is possesed, you dont have to throw in cheesy special effects-even if it is for just a moment. The main scare factor in this movie has very little to do with special effects, and I think it should have just left that part out. My husband thinks she should have been holding a knife in the doorway after throwing Micah and have her come close to the camera and slit her own throat. I think it should have shown her standing over Micah and have her walk away–but as she walks away to have her footsteps catch on fire (since it talks about her childhood home catching on fire). Its a demon, it can do these things!
your husband is thinking of the alternate ending. i like your idea though.
the police donnt shoot her
Even with the ending in the trailer, it still creeped me out.
At least up until the part that she threw herself at the camera.
Well, it does show her rocking back and forth in one of the trailers. So i still liked the movie. Creepy, creepy.
One of the ending of her slitting her throat is the one that scares me the most. However, the really scary part is that she smiles before doing it.
Oh my goodness! I'm a huuuuuuge scardy cat when it comes to scary movies (even scenes from Casper scared me!) so when my boyfriend dragged me to the theater with promises to see Zombieland and then switched it up last minute when buying the tickets, I was a little shaken. He knew I was a scaredy cat, sure, but he doesn't know the full extent it reaches to.
During the movie I was totally breaking his hand. I was scared but not extremely…at first. Once that stuff with the baby powder happened, it was all over for me. The demon becoming active in the day time, the board moving like crazy an catching fire (was that before or after the powder? Who cares– that scared me shitless), and the parts where it actually got physical and Katie was being dragged out of bed and fucked with while she was sleeping…this set me off the most.
All in all, I knew that this stuff was pretty convincing– I could see this happening. And I was debating with myself if it was a true story through and through or if Hollywood had gotten its hands on it and recreated some of the more fearsome scenes. But once she came in, sniffed and snuffed Micah's body, then turned to the camera, I knew it wasn't true. what demon would smile at the camera then go apeshit on it?! That sort of ruined the whole effect the movie had had on me.
Ugh….felt a shiver. Ummm….so, I question I probably should have asked before making the above statement, was it based off of true happenings? That's all I'm really curious about…osh, this movie gets my imagination going. I'm kinda not wanting to know the answer to my question anymore…what if she really did run off? Where is she now? Or WHAT for that matter?
@Olivia: Olivia, if you go to Wikipedia and look up the movie, I think the director mentions that something similar but not as intense happened to him, which was his motivation for him to make the movie. It was filmed entirely in his house! There wasn't really a script so the actors had to improvise most of it. The end seen when she looks at the camera was recommended by Steven Spielberg who saw the and didn't want to change anything to it. While Spielberg was watching the movie at night, the two doors to his den locked on their own. He ended up shutting off the movie and watching it during daylight hours.
I have not seen the movie and have no intentions of watching it. The commercials alone freak me out…
I though the ending was fantastic as is. I've never seen the trailer so the body flying into the camera scared the *hell* out of me. I did feel however that the final demon face-morphing thing was slightly cheesy. I thought it would have been creepier if the film just ended with Katie smiling into the camera.
ok, i saw this last night, and it scared the hell out of me.
unfortunatley, i saw the trailer so i knew that micah being thrown at the cam was going to happen at some point. This took a huge chunk out of how scared i was, as i had already had my hands over my face peeping through my fingers by the time it happened.
i agree that the demon face thing at the end was very cheesy, and unnecessary. A perfect ending in my mind wouild have been for micah to be thrown at the camera and then show katie standing in the door as usual, but then instead of attacking the camera after examining his body, she stood up, walked over to the bed, sat down with her back against the bed, and remained there rocking back and forth, as you can see her do in the trailer, for some two days. after the two days, she appears to emerge from her possesed state. at this point, she looks down at her shirt, then over at micahs body. then she starts crying histerically and freaking out, then the lamp on the bedside table flies at her, knocks her over, then she is dragged off into another room in the upstairs part of the house, and we hear her scream briefly, along with some of the demonic snarling heard earlier in the movie, and the screen fades to black.
it sounds long, but i envisioned it as taking about a minute and a half / two minutes at the most. the movie was EXTREMELY scary, and i couldnt sleep after i got home from the theater last night. even more impressive is the movie's budget, im surprised they were able to create such a claustrophobic, eerie atmosphere for only 11,000$.
Also, does anyone know how they got katie dragged out of bed? as in was this a CGI effect or a conventional effect?
I personally, in all seriousness, saw a swastika on the 2nd board of the bed when the camera was on her face. It was towards the middle of the board I suppose. I just came from the movie, and I was stumped. The dates didnt match up. Body discovered on the 11th? And the events were happening through like 10/13-10/20?
Ok, i saw this movie last night and I'm confused. If this is real footage then im supposing Micah really is dead and Katie's where abouts are unknown..? But you can look them up and it shows recent updates on them and interviews that have been within the 3 years that this whole thing actually happend..
@Brooke: -_- The movie was staged… it's been said many times that it is not real.
@Angela: I do have to agree with you on the demonic face at the end, it was a little too much. Personally I think she should have looked at his body, then the camera, maybe swatted the camera to knock it on its side and then walked back down the stairs to never be seen again. Something like that would have made it a little bit more realistic, which the entire film was meant to be such.
@Brooke:
I saw that the dates didn't match up too… I was so confused. I got home and searched forums on google to see if anyone else had noticed, but no one mentioned it so I thought I didn't read it right. But you noticed it!!!
I'm sorry everyone my husband and I went to see it to night 10/24 at the theater, I found it boring and well stupid. I believe in the supernatural. But, this movie had the blair whitch project feel about it. The ending was okay not very scary and the whole movie personally, to my husband and I was a waste of a sturday night and the 20 bucks to watch it. I have to say I fell a sleep three times during the movie because i was so bored. We talk to a few others that were there also and they were let down too. Though my husband said the ending was kind of ok highlight of the movie. Maybe we are just not sensitive to the paranormal movies in a scary way like some.
i think they should go with the original ending , of what really happened
because when i watched it yesterday with my friends, i think the ending was okay ( i can say)
but i knew it wasn't true (knowing stuff could happen like that), but the ending was a bit stupid and not scary at all … the rest of the movie was crazy but the ending .. no ,it was dum …so it would be way better to do the original ending of what really happened, yes some people might find it disturbing and some people wont find it disturbing…but come on… some movies are disturbing like ( rap , shooting insist kid or adults and others) . if you said if its true story , than put the original ending … don't put a fake one, cause the throwing part and her unknown body ..( to me , it really don't make scenes, i don't know about other people ) but it was little confusing … so yeah that was my opinion , i don't know if you guys agree with it , but its whatever …
i totally agree with jessica
they should put the original ending on,
because when i was watching it, i saw the ending , and it said that his body was found and her body was unknown… i was kinda hoping for more
and now that i read the real fact of the ending .. i think they should put it on …
hay!!!! they said it was a true story , so put the real true story of the ending …
i wont find it disturbing … i want to know the truth, nothing but the truth
( i do believe in good spirits and bad spirits and that bad spirits can hurt you )
so yup , agree
@Alize and @jessica: No, it's not a real story whatsoever. It is 100% fiction.
It may be fiction but it was really weel done
@Brad Brevet: so its a fake story
so why do they say its a true story , like that's so stupid ..
@jessica: It's never been referred to as a true story. Director Oren Peli got the idea after hearing some noises in a new house of his. Here's a quote for you:
I think this would have been better, if they would not put a name on whatever it was, cause comparisons start. If it was a mystery like the "Blair witch …" (never know what hits you) would have been more chilling.
The timing of the cameras was not perfect. Everything started at ../../09.
The guy needs 2 min to check the whole house
And on the night when the air blows on the side of the bed, I think theres a position and shirt change, that does not match. Maybe is my TV.
P.S. Cool J.P. Belmondo pic
@Brad Brevet: oooo okay
i get it now … thanks for that , now i know its not a true story ..
because before everyone was sayin its a true story , and i thought it was , so i know now lol
thanks you
Did anyone else see the part when the little girl runs by the stairs on the 1st floor of the house when the guy walked out to check things out but only went to the doorway of the bedroom and turned back for his girlfriend? When he turns back the camera flashes by the stairs pointing at the living room and you see a little girl run by.
Sorry to resurrect the thread, but for those following this, I just discovered that the original ending is available on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRakKcpkxqU
I have a feeling it may not stay on there too long.
So, after seeing it, has anyone changed their mind? The original ending has its moments, but I do like the new one a little better.
Enjoy!
@Tim P.:
He recorded about 10 hours at a time. He kept the 5min of video each night that had something on it and deleted the rest. 10 hours is under 2 days. Also a lap top can have WAY over a 1 tera byte hard drive, 1,000 giga bytes of memory and that is plenty for 2 days. Don't say facts about stuff unless you know.
@Tim P.: O and a decent disk can easily capture 10-13 hours. easily.
if katie was the real demon then how did she bite herself in the back? :P
She wasn't the demon at first… It followed her and bit her outside of her body. At the end is when it possessed her
@Brooke:
If you watch the very end of the movie theres a disclaimer that states all of the characters were fictious ans any similarities were purely coincidental. It is ony a movie which is why you were able to find interviews with the actors.
This movie was sooooooo far from being scary. It had a decent ending, but, the majority of the movie was spoiled by kids who screamed because they watched the trailer too many times and believed they had to re-enact audience response.
The acting was decent, the story line was good…but like all horror movies, it lacked any elements that created fear. If you're easily scared, this movie is for you.
I think that the original ending was a little anti-climatic. Micah wasn't even thrown at the camera! I mean, for a movie that was soooo scary from the moment the lights dimmed in the theater, just watching her rock back and forth and be killed is a little disappointing. It's just kind of like oh, there's the end, soo not scary but whatever. Perhaps it's just the shock factor like "finally that demon took over her" and maybe you're next.
This movie sucked, not at all scary. The same shit happens (and the majority of the film nothing happens) every night. WAY TO FUCKING BORING! People were actually leaving the theater, not because it was "scary" but because it was such a yawn fest. 0/10
i think the original ending was creepier than the one they showed in theatres. sitting there rocking for two days… *shiver* but the police kind of ruined it by just shooting her. also standing over the bed staring at micah? for three hours! that's insane D: i had a hard time deciding if i should try to sleep or not that night, and if i should keep the light on.
I just came home from seeing this movie. Personally, I liked it. My dad thought it was okay, and similar to the Blair Witch Project, however he found Paranormal Activity to be less scary, more… I don't know, creepy?
I enjoyed the ending in theaters, but agree with others when they say it would have been much scarier had they not revealed so much in the trailer, and had they omitted that silly demon face. Her possession was quite clear to the audience from the moment we saw her clutching the razorblades or whatever the sharp object was. Infact, moments later, she suddenly had changed her mind about leaving the house. As if everything was over, and the entity had gone. Not to mention her wryly smiling at the camera like she'd gotten away with a good lie. Did Micah miss the odd smile she was giving the camera? Was he not looking through it at her? This was clearly the demon speaking! I felt like shouting DON'T STAY, STUPID! IT'S A TRAP!!!
I was disappointed Micah believed her when she said she wanted to stay. He should not have let her stay, and he should have refused when she asked him to stay with her. I know he didn't want to leave her, but obviously the demon was after him. Did he miss the whole cracked picture of himself hanging on the wall? I don't think it was a realistic human reaction to witness all these attempts on their lives, and stay in that house another minute, let alone continue to lie in their bed and try to sleep.
I also can't help but wonder why the paranormal investigator-guy didn't even follow up on them with a call, when he wouldn't go into their house. I get that he knew the demon did not approve of his presence, but the least he could do is call them to give advice on how they should proceed.
Ugh, I make all these comments, however, the loose ends don't really matter that much to me in the long run. It was a scary movie, no matter what anyone says. I get that some say they were bored and fell asleep, but that's only because they detached themselves from the story and did not picture themselves in this situation, or even care for the couple's well being. It was fictional, so why bother with feeling emotions towards their demise? Well don't bother seeing a movie if you don't want to, on some level, emotionally attach yourself to the storyline!
I don't mean to attack anyone by saying this, it's just how I feel when I read people's comments saying a movie sucks or is a dullfest.
Jess
jessica h is right i just saw this movie a year after it came out and yes micah should not have stayed in that house he shouldve gotten out but it wouldnt have mattered for Katie it said the demon will follow her wherever she goes and can you actually find the video of that girl on the internet the excorcist? that was the creepies tpart for me
I am still wondering if this movie is a hoax? I watched it got me scared….but why wasn't it investigated on the tv series paranormal state?
Another question is why would their parents let this movie go public? Did they receive all the millions they made from this movie?
it was a good movie i actually have seen the original ending. A little scary. Most of the begining was boring. Genral scary bangs etc the endin was good would say all in all only like the last 20 mins or so. STILL DONT THINK ITS TRUE DONT BELIVE IT TILL I SEE IT :)
I really liked the film.I am a real fanatic of horror movie, i have almost seen every one you can think of but this was by far the sacariest movie i have ever seen. i saw it but i saw it with the original ending i never knew it had that other one but i am glad i saw the original one because i would have ben more scared with the other ending
i would like to see if anyone could tell me a website to see the other ending
@ginny: The movie is not based on a true story, it tells you in the commercial it is fictitious and any resemblances to real life are coincedental.
@Tim P.:
… 750gb HDD for 2.5" is biggest available at the moment.
uses about 1gb per 10mins. That's 125 hours, which is 5+ days
sorry, just had to point this out! :-)
that was so f-ing scary me and my sis were screaming so loud that our whole entire block could hear us. Just as they polled her out of her bed me and ree – ree almost had a freaking heart attack. so if this is your first time watching this then please have some one by your side.
Oh my god just saw the film at the cinema with my girlfriend and i aint ashamed to say one bit that i did scream at the end :(
It was bloody terrific and i did keep looking away also.
The bit where she gets dragged out the bedroom and also the bit where he finds the picture in the loft were fantastic.
Made me laugh tho when she said lets stay her now and does a weird smile.
I just knew she had changed into the demon and was going to kill him. I said to my girlfriend shes the demon and is going to go crazy.
If these two dont get awards for there acts its bloody mental.
The actors deserve full credit and im sure this has just started promising carrers for both of them.
Cant stop thinking about it and stuff
Brilliant
I actually just watched this movie today in my highschool psychology class. I'd never heard of it before, hadn't heard any of the hype, and hadn't seen any trailers. I watched the original version with the original ending.
I found the beginning a bit boring, though i get now why they did it. They needed to get you to know the characters and their personalities so you could see the drastic change later on.
As soon as the footsteps in the powder appeared, I knew I was hooked. I started hyperventilating and clinging to my friend just staring at the screen, knowing that whaterer happened next, things were going to only get worse.
I didn't really find the picture in the attic realistic or believable, just.. Kinda odd.
Another factor though was that it was kind of hard to get into the movie with a bunch of classmates around. Right when the demon went to pull katie out of bed, one of my classmates pulled on the back of a girl's chair and she screamed so loudly that everyone laughed, dissapating the fear in the air.
I don't really know where I was going with this, but that was my experience. I think I like this original ending to the way the new one sounds. This one was much scarrier, though it would have been better if, when the coppers turned away, her body rose from her slouch on the floor and she killed them, and then walked out.
okay, i watched paranormal activity and i apsolutly shat my pants no doubt about it, but ive also got a suggestion. the whole way throughout the film they poor guy had his camera turned on and if you noticed when she was "sleep walking" all she ever did was stare at him, but if the camera was off i garentee something else probably would have happened.
i got the feeling asif the demon was trying to lure him away from the camera so he could kill him. As to many other parts of the film that was scary i cant explain.
~jake1992
I've seen both endings to the film, and I think that the original is by far the most scary or freaky version, mainly due to the fact that it is more plausible to the average viewer. The way Micah's body is thrown at the camera makes it seem far less likely than the way Katie's catatonic state continues after Micah's death, and the original ending also provides an explantion on how the video was found.
Okay, I saw this film yesterday evening with a friend. Last time I saw a horror film in the cinema, I couldn't sleep for about 3 nights, but I slept like a log last night. I did find it pretty freaky, though, and for a lot of it I was seriously shaking and had my feet on the back of the chair in front because I didn't want them to touch the ground. I think a lot of it depends on the audience you have; obviously the trailer audience was really psyched up, some people mention how their whole audience found it boring… the audience I was in was very small, only 20-30 in a full sized cinema, and it was largely teenagers out with friends, having a laugh, so when the sheet was blown back from her foot, somebody behind me just whispered 'paedo' and the atmosphere was broken.
I agree with a lot of people, that the ending could have done without the whole daemonic look thing. My friend and I talked a lot about it, and we think it would be better to just end it with the footsteps coming upstairs, then a few seconds silence, the door slams and the screen blacks out. Afterwards, they could just have the line about discovering Micah's body, and leave Katie hanging. (After all, it's 15 in England. People should be old enough to work out the implication.)
Lastly, it would have been good if they'd offered some kind of explanation for the daemon. But that's less important. Generally, it was just a brilliant horror film.
just watched the movie last night at my home and when the movie got to day 18 and the door slammed shut my dvd player spit the movie out and turned off so we thought it was the end of the movie so my husband put it back in again went to day 18 and it happened again , so then we put the movie in again and skipped to the next scene and then rewinded and it worked so that was pretty creepy for us
Personally I thought the first 30 minutes of the film was very slow. But, then the idea of her still being out there just makes me look behind myself to check. On another note I thought the "Ghost" may have been one of her ex boyfriends although the movie didn't specify. I wish they had made only one ending tho because now i have to watch the origonal ending =-( .
Did anyone notice that in the theatrical ending whenever she gets out of the bed at the end one of her feet is like distorted and in a weird position?
I think it was the little details like that that gave the movie a creepy feeling.
Like in the background you would see doors open before something happened.
Just little things like that gave me chills.
Over all I really enjoyed this film, I actually bought it on DVD today.
@JM: There's no way that the demon WAS Katie. Demons are beings that have never walked the earth. They're minions of Satan. Meaning it couldn't actually be Diane or Katie.
@Alex Duran: Why would it be her ex-boyfriend? That doesn't make sense.
@chewbaca69: i have the dvd and i know its not on dvd but i know ppl and it ends like how horror squard say it did the cinema version sounds
even better
i do believe in those things because growing up as a kid i remember my old house use to be haunted. i use to hear footstep, things droping, toilet flushing. it never hurt me an my family so we didnt even try to get it out but we did look into it an was told it was a dutch lady. so i do believe things like that can actually happen.
@Nicci: the dates didnt match up because the ghost/demon didnt haunt them every night. they cut it so it can be short an only show us when things were happening an when the were freaking out.
Okay, I watched the dvd last night before I went to bed. Not smart, huh? lol Anyway, I really like the alternate ending where Micah is never seen and she walks in the room covered in blood. Then she walks up to the camera and slits her throat. That was the last thing I was expecting. Can I just say I had to go get my husband from downstairs for me to be able to go to sleep? lol
I have a question that's been nagging at me since the first time I watched this movie. Would Katie had even been born when Diane was killed?
My take on it is that Diane was reincarnated as Katie. When the demon spells out the word "diane" on the ouja board this is the demons way of saying "you can run from me but eventually i will find you.
I think that's why the demon wanted Micah to find the picture of Katie when she was a little kid. This is the Demons way of saying GOTCHA!!
I just watched this movie by myself in a strange house the other night, and even though I didn't particularly like the ending, it did really get under my skin. I had a hell of a time falling asleep.
As people above mentioned, I too noticed the dates were off. Blazer, I think they were talking about the fact that Micah's body was discovered on the 11th, but the date of the final recording showing him getting killed was the 20th (I believe). I'd have to go back and watch it again to be sure, but I'm positive they said it was the 11th of that month.
Also, someone else mentioned something that caught my eye. Katie got raped? Whereabouts in the movie was that scene?
Lol, nevermind, the comment about the dates. Just watched it again. The last scene takes place on the 8th, so it turns out the dates are all good after all. I think people were just mixing up the "Day 20" title with the date which was right below it.
I saw the original ending and it sucked so hard. I wanted to see the revised ending cause this on is terrible.
@ginny: I notice you said 'their parents'…..this confused me. A) It's fictional and B) they are a couple and in their twenties at least, their parents have no control over what they film!!
Ok, so i just wantched this movie and form what I have been told, alot of the stuff that happened in the movie was real, except the ending, that her being pulled outta bed and being bitten was real, just not her killing him, nor disappearing. I read the above statements, but still its hard for me to tell, I was also informed that Steven Speilberg, (not sure if its spelled right) looked over the movie scene by scene n everything n didnt find anything showing it was a fake. Can someone explain, cuz ive had moments with stuff like that happening to me!!
Just saw a copy with the original ending last night. I figured that when the friend came over, and started screaming, she had been attacked by the demon (not ghost). Just a moment before the screaming starts downstairs, Katie stops rocking back and forth, as though the demon had left her temporarily… then when it quiets down, she starts rocking back and forth again. That and it doesn't sound like the friend left. The scream seemed too stationary, and there were no panicked footsteps on the hardwood flooring below.
Well the seriously thought that this movie was REAL :S but it Does seem like a real movie :@ so confused. . but now i know that it is a fake movie they did a really good job at mking it seem real they get props for that it scared the living crap outta me. i hate it when katie Screamed i jumped! but good movie. .
I'd like to know…. What are the names at the end ? for like an hour there are thousands of names just going down the screen…. what is it ?
omg!i just watched this for now the 6th time and i found out that this is not a real story lol.
i know right my name is taylor to nice to meet you lol.
im 11 and i saw it in theaters it didnt scare me xcept 4 da end. alot of these things happened to me @ ma old house that caught on fire… i thought i saw some thing @ da end of my bed. my sister and i shared a bunkbed, she saw it 2… thought it was a shadow… hmmmmm….
just freaky
i shit my pants
ive got the version with the original ending on my ps3, the one where they shoot her, if thats the original, and her freind comes and finds micahs body downstairs but doesnt find katie cus shes upstairs, its a good ending, i was hoping for the one where he gets thrown, cus that would of been cooler :D
i have seen many movies and this was lame some guys just want to do movie it´s same me and my friend say let´s do horror movie. this movie suck
hi erm the secound ending is slighty different to how you described it. 1 we believe when katies friend came in she actually got draggd and put into a cuboard as if you listen theres lots of strugggleing that u can hear. 2 the police did not shoot her they radio in on there walkie talkie and say no shots fired, they then look around the house to try and find where the shoots came from.
yes it is
wooow im so scared!!
sana masundan pa ng nkakatakot ^^
well i have the movie and i liked the eding and i still do not know if it is real footage but the ending on the extended vershion is katie screams micha gets up he screams and then u here the footsteeps and she walks up to the camera and cuts her head of! witch i thought was strage because how can she come back in the 2nd 1 and from the altertive ending i doubt the footage is real and the ending u talked about with the police is weird also was that another ending????? so many endings i cant wait to c the 2nd 1 i loved the movie even tho im only 12 :) im still very confused about what ending is real if the movie IS real footage
I fully realize that I am late for this discussion. That part doesn't bother me. What does though, is the fact that people actually thought this was real? I suppose some of the people talking here could be children and have never watched horror movies so I wont hate too hard.
BUT COME ON!!! It was not THAT scary. The ending they chose for the movie was predictable and most of us probably saw it coming before the guy even flew into the room. It was disappointing to see them trying to end it with a cheap OBVIOUS scare when they could have made it a bleak depressing ending like discussed above. By the end I wanted the demon to win because the characters were annoying and unlikeable(Even more so in the sequel). Hell in number 2, I wanted the demon to kill the father from the very beginning! The coolest part of the movie was how they implement the rumbling bass in the background when the demon was around. I loved that part.
This film did get to me. it's so simple, but scared me in the same way as Blair Witch, even though I knew from the start, that they were not true (the actors are still around today); the suspense is awful LOL.
In Paranormal, the bit that I think bothered me the most, halfway thru, middle of the night, they were sleeping, and the hall light just clicks on.. silence for about 5 seconds, and then just clicks off again .. you know the demon was up to something, but you don't know what .. that unknown, is just chilling.
oh, and there is no friggen way, that bedroom door would be open all night. that camera would be recording out in the hall, behind the locked bedroom door. Yes, it know it wouldn't keep the demon out, but the psychological factor of just having that yawning dark portal there at night .. no sir. not for me. :D
you guys all know the film isnt based on a true story right?
