READ THIS FIRST: The first round has completed and the second round of voting is now open. To vote for the 53 films that moved on to the second round CLICK HERE.

UPDATE #2: Comments have been closed as polling for the first round has ended and the second round will be opening very shortly.

UPDATE: After looking over the logs I have noticed SEVERAL people have been voting for fewer than five films. Of course the poll allows you to do this, but the rules clearly state you need to vote for FIVE films, which will make for a far more accurate count. As a result I have deleted the logs and votes for those that voted for three films or less. I can understand how you may have accidentally voted for only four films, but no fewer. I will continue to monitor the logs up and through the closing of the poll and before we move into final voting so please stick to the rules.

What this means is if you are part of the group that had your votes deleted you can vote once again, but will need to be sure to vote for five films this time as the rules clearly stipulate. This is obviously a work in progress so please bare with me as the kinks are worked out. If I try this again next year I will most likely wait until mid-February and develop my own voting system as opposed to using a generic polling widget.

I will also be including more than 15 films in the upcoming poll in search of a top ten. Right now I am thinking more like 50 and allow you to vote for ten films out of that 50. Like I said… a work in progress. Thanks for bearing with me and stay tuned.

I have never tried this before so I'm working blind here in hopes this is something you like and can be expanded upon next year. I have listed 175 movies from 2009 below and am asking you to nominate five films as your choice for Best Picture of 2009. Notice, this is not a prediction article. I'm asking for your opinion only. What five films do you consider to be the best of 2009?

How this will work, is I will close this poll on Wednesday night, at which time I will take the top 15* nominated films and post a new poll so we can get down to a final list of the top ten films of 2009 as determined by RopeofSilicon users, which will obviously include your choice of the #1 film of 2009. My plan is to post the final results on Tuesday, January 5, the day after I post my personal award choices in the 2nd Annual RopeofSilicon Awards. So start voting and share this poll with your friends around the Internet so we can get a large group of opinions.

Also, while I included 175 movies, if one is not on the list that you wish to be on the list be sure to comment below, because if you don't there is no chance it will be included in the final voting. If enough people mention the same film in the comments.

Now get to nominating, and remember you are voting on FIVE films. I must admit, I am extremely curious to see how your opinions rank. Will Avatar top your lists? I would bet Pixar's Up will be in the final 15 and the same goes for Inglourious Basterds, District 9, Star Trek, (500) Days of Summer and The Hangover. But how about some of the middle-range buzzy films such as Zombieland, Moon, Where the Wild Things Are. Or perhaps the box-office surprise superstar The Blind Side or limited release awards contenders such as Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, An Education and Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire? Any Meryl Streep fans out there going to rush to support Julie and Julia and/or It's Complicated? Is it possible there are enough Watchmen fans to give it a chance?

I can't wait to find out.

I think 5 feels a little short. After all, the Academy will be nominating 10 films this year and so I think we should have the same opportunity. Anyway my vote has been counted. We ll see what happens.

    Very good idea…
just looking at the voting so far, very surprised to see New Moon in the top 10 on this site!!

    My top 5:
    Avatar
    Moon
    Inglorious Basterds
    District 9
    The Damned United

  8. Brad Brevet (Post Author)

@maja: Well, you have to consider the one thing that will skew the results are fans spamming certain films. That's going to be the main reason certain films will hit certain heights. I'll be sure to track links and see if there is any way to adjust for obvious spamming.

  9. Colton Bragdon

Avatar and The Hurt Locker are in a close battle for 1st!!! Why would any of you include New Moon??? Those books and movies are stupid!

  10. Joe

@Brad Brevet: So, because New Moon is getting votes it's automatically fans spamming? Maybe people genuinely like the movie.

  11. Brad Brevet (Post Author)

@Joe: Not automatically, but it is a trend on the Internet. This happens a lot. Last year it happened with award predictions and Meryl Streep as her fans turned out in droves. It's not saying people didn't like the film, just that there is the possibility of the results being skewed by a particular fanbase.

  12. Chris

Everyone seemed to hate it and it wasn't my favorite of the year (that was Avatar), but I really liked "The Burning Plain".

  13. goavs

    adventureland? Really?

  14. goavs

    top 10(not in order)

  16. Nate

    My Picks:

    An Education
    Inglourious Basterds
    Fantastic Mr. Fox
    Up
    District 9

    I have yet to see:
    Avatar & Hurt Locker

I have seen most of the movies on this list, and those are the only two that I expect could be in my top 5.

  17. Leighton

    An Education
    Where the Wild Things Are
    In the Loop
    The Damned United
    Pirate Radio

    I know, I'm a bit of a minority

  18. Lewis

films not listed that were extraordinary:

    TREELESS MOUNTAIN
    GOODBYE SOLO

  19. jrc ven

    top 5 films 2009
    1. Inglourious Basterds
    2. Avatar
    3. The hurt Locker
    4. Up
    5. Up in the Air

  20. PinstripedJon

    New Moon? What a joke.

I wasn't aware there were so many 15 year old girls on this site.

  21. frannie

Why wasn't the "Ugly Truth included"….it was far funnier than The Proposal and The Hangover is strictly a Guy movie …JMO! I voted for Law Abiding Citizen …one of my favorites!

  22. Andy

This was a really hard decision for me partly because I still have many movies I need to watch and partly because we were limited to only 5 movies.

    1. Avatar
    2. Up
    3. Precious
    4. District 9
    5. Star Trek

    6. Where the Wild Things Are
    7. Coraline
    8. The Princess and the Frog
    9. Drag Me to Hell
    10. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Like I said, I still need to see a BUNCH of movies.

  23. Dan

I don't understand all of the enthusiasm for Avatar in the context of this list. The experience of seeing it was amazing, but can we really say that it was Best Picture of the year? It's hard for me to place a movie with that weak of a script in my Top 5. I think the 3-D movies at Disney World are fun too but I'm not ready to call those the best of the year. Technically speaking, the film was outstanding, but movies are made up of so much more than good technology. I'm curious, other than the special effects, what has made everyone so excited about Avatar?

  24. Debra M de Rodriguez

Living outside the States, I still have many excellent movies on your list to see. Nevertheless I enjoyed the following 5 so much these make my list:

    Sherlock Holmes
    Star Trek
    Avatar
    Up
The Soloist (OK, I'm a huge RDJ fan. I guess that's obvious!)

  25. Andy

@Dan: To me Avatar is the Best Picture of the year because of the impact it left one me. I went to the midnight release with average expectations and I was blown away. The story, the acting, the visual/audio effects, the script, and the originality all were above and beyond in my book. I thoroughly enjoy Zoe and Sigourney's performances. Sam could have done a bit better but I believe he was perfect for the part. Plus the movie had a major anti-war and environmental message which are part of my morality/humanity. The movie was very well made and it's nice to know that someone out there can spend $200 million on movie and make it what it's worth. (I.e. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, one of the WORST films I have ever seen.) Mind you that I am only 16 years old and am a major movie critic and I think beyond my years, but truly I believe Avatar was spectacularly epic.

  26. aj

    top 20 are
    20. ninja assassin
    19. the soloist
    18. watchmen
    17. public enemies
    16. 2012
    15. taken
    14. Bruno
    13. Sherlock holmes
    12. Harry potter 6
    11. zombieland
    10. District 9
    9. The hangover
    8. where the wild things are
    7. up
    6. funny people
    5. a single man
    4. inglorious basterds
    3. Avatar
    2. precious
    1. The hurt locker
but this is from what i saw this year

  27. Adriano

It's kinda funny (in a weird way) that one of my five picks has only one vote besides mine. That's "Two Lovers".

  28. loxmang

this is interesting… considering the vote leaves inglourious basterds as the number 1 thus far… watr the chances it'll win best picture? probably 0.. isnt somethin messed up if the public thinks inglourious is the best picture judging by these votes and it probably wont be recognized as the best picture… i just saw it 2 days ago.. its my top movie of the year hands down and i think it should be recognized

  29. Joe

@Brad Brevet: But therein lies the problem. It's a fanbase, voting for a particular film. "Fanbase" being the keyword. They like the film and they vote. How is that skewing the results? If a big group of people were voting for something they hated with the goal of putting it number one, then I would see that as something being skewed. But it's not, it's a group of fans who want their favorite movie to be number one, and there's nothing wrong with that.

  30. Danny

So far my top 5 movies… are actually not all what a voted for… but I was trying to be more democratic… though my top 3 movies i did vote for… here is my top 10 (as of right now… I have not yet seen Avatar (a movie that is challenging my "movie geekness", I'll see it and end probably end up liking it quite a bit, but I'm no where near as excited for it as the internet tells me I'm supposed to be), also I haven't seen 500 days of Summer, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Up, The Hurt Locker or Up in the Air yet… so things might change later

    1. Where the Wild Things Are
    2. Inglorious Basterds
    3. The Road
    4. District 9
    5. The Hangover
    6. I Love You, Man
    7. Adventureland
    8. Paranormal Activity (I'm surprised it made my list too)
    9. Zombieland
    10. The Box

Now mind you these are my personal favorites of the year so far and as stated there are quite a few that i have not gotten a chance to see, some I listed above, the top 3 are cemented in there, 4-7 could change. And i didn't get to see as many smaller or indie flicks this year as I usually do.

  31. Matt

I have only seen about thirty films from this year.

    1) Inglourious Basterds
    2) Where the Wild Things Are
    3) (500) Days of Summer
    4) Zombieland
    5) Moon

  32. M Richmond

I want THE UGLY TRUTH to be my fifth pick for the list. It was mucho funnier than most of the other comedies on your list. ("Will you talk dirty to me?")
Love me that sexy adult scatological humor. :)

And I'm in agreement with post #1. Too bad you didn't expand to ten final slots as the Academy has.

New Moon – I'm in my thirties and NOT a mother…. The books are the best. The movie was beautiful and did a great job encompassing a 600 page book.

  52. Kent

Awesome idea – will be interesting to see what everyone votes. My 5 in order:

    1. Inglorious basterds
    2. Avatar
    3. The Lovely Bones
    4. Up
    5. District 9

Worst movie of the year: Where the Wild Things are. Absolute rubbish.

  53. junjun

    1.Avatar
    2.UP
    3.The Hurt Locker
    4.Inglourious Basterds
    5.(500) Days of Summer

  54. Raichu

    The 5 Best:

    Avatar
    Inglourious Basterds
    UP
    Adventureland
    District 9

    The 5 worst:

It starts and ends with "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." There are plenty of other bad films from this past year, but no one is putrid enough to stand alongside "Fallen." That garbage is in a league of it's own.

  55. Sapphyre

    The Ugly Truth

  56. Maybe it's an idea to make a shortlist of around thirty movies and then let us choose – like the Academy – ten films. Five was quite hard indeed, but it seems my top 10 would make it when it comes to thirty tites…

Now I have gone with (Avatar not seen):
    Moon
    Up
    Inglourious Basterds
    The Hurt Locker
and can't remember my fifth choice. Too hard I guess. The Messenger, 500 Days, District 9, Public Enemies, Fantastic Mr Fox, Up in the Air.

  57. The Ugly Truth? really? is this the spamming you were talking about Brad?

  58. pixetti

Nine (I didn't see it but I'm excitet since day one)

    @Brad Brevet:
Hey Brad is there a way you can ensure users only vote once? I mean when I see a movie like Gamer so high on votes, it's hard to take things seriously.

  61. Robert

Top 5 films of the year
    1.Star Trek
2.Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
    3.Public Enemies

Honorable mentions: Land Of The Lost, Bruno, Fame

  62. Vicki

I clicked in 'Other' because I want to nominate 'The Ugly Truth'. I love that movie – it was really funny. Much better than 'The Proposal' although I do love Sandra Bullock.

  63. Roger

    Avatar
    Up
    The Hangover
    Star Trek
    Law Abiding Citizen

  64. Vicki

@cineJAB: 'The Ugly Truth' should have been included in the list. It did well at the Box Office (not just in the US either) and it's a funny movie. Might not have been your cup of tea but I'm sure other movies you disliked were included in the original list.

  65. Corey Bloom

    1.Inglourious Basterds
    2.District 9
    3.Watchmen
    4.(500) Days Of Summer
    5.Public Enemies

  66. Brad Brevet (Post Author)

@adu: People are only voting once and films such as Gamer and Law Abiding Citizen are climbing the list because fans of Gerard Butler have teamed together to spam the voting, which is also why a lot of commenters are asking for The Ugly Truth to be included. This will be taken into consideration when we move forward.

  68. Vicki

@Brad Brevet: A valid question – why wasn't 'The Ugly Truth' included in your list?

  69. adu

    @Brad Brevet:

Oh ok, cant do much about them spammers I suppose.

I'm also surprised at the love for Adventureland… hey, to each his own :)

One last thing, I'm wondering as to why you gave us the option of only picking 5 movies instead of ten? I mean usually it's a top 10 year-end list (even the Academy will be picking 10 so it would've been nice to see which ones that were selected compared to the results on this site). Just curious.

Where is THE UGLY TRUTH????????? Not happy that it was missing from this lis!

  74. A.

    @Brad Brevet:

I am a fan of Gerard Butler, but if you noticed I didn't vote for Gamer. I think it is insulting to question why a person would like a movie. You have a huge list and yet you fail to include a movie that did well in the theatres. I saw the Ugly Truth 4 times in the theatre and bought the Dvd the day it came out because I enjoyed the movie that much. This isn't spamming.

Are you going to question everyone's motives? Or just people who voted for Law Abiding Citizen, Gamer, and the Ugly Truth?

Also I didn't vote for movies I have not seen
personally as others have. Are you going to throw those out too or skew the results?

Suggestion: have a complete movie list and no comments next time….

  75. GregM

    Democracy is fun.

@Patricia Shields and a few others: The Ugly Truth is on the list. It's called "Other" and has a maximum of 28 votes at the time I posted this comment.

  76. I am dissapointed that the "Ugly Truth" is not listed. Gerard Butler was on a list for "Peoples "and had well over 1/2 of the votes for Best Male Actor and Johnny Depp had 11 of the total votes.Don't anyone but me feel there is a problem here? My vote is for 'Ugly Truth" ,"Gamer", "Law Abideing Citizen","Where The Wild Things Are",and"Travelers Wife".

  77. DustyD

Five is tough. Here are mine in no particular order…

    – Moon
    – Up
    – Coraline
    – Inglourious Basterds
    – Zombieland (movie was decent enough alone but the opening credits were the best i've seen for a zombie flick. period.)

  78. Tedums_Precious

Whoops. I definitely didn't read all of the comments. Other people suggested The Ugly Truth before I did. Too many sycophants mess up the results for a poll like this…

  79. Cory

I felt there was a lot of good movies this year, but very few great films, so after Inglourious Basterds, Avatar, and A Serious Man it was hard to choose. The last two spots could have been filled by a few films but I went with Fantastic Mr. Fox because of how pleasantly suprised I was with it. I'm not a huge Wes Anderson or animated film fan, but the film was very original and well made. My last choice was Big Fan just because it has stuck with me months after I've seen it. I'm glad to see atleast 3 other people also enjoyed it.

  80. zyzygy

    I guess nobody saw Pandorum.

How can it be spamming when can only vote ONCE for your fav five? Did you not say to share this poll with your friends?

"So start voting and share this poll with your friends around the Internet so we can get a large group of opinions".

    -Sherlock Holmes
    -It's Complicated
    -The Lovely Bones

  90. Robert

    Adventureland is defintely being spammed

  91. The Jackal

Given the fact that the Academy has decided to have 10 Nominees, I will comment accordingly. Also, it must be noted that as of this posting I've yet to see An Education, It's Complicated, or Broken Embraces.

The Nominees for Best Picture (2009) are:

    Avatar
    (500) Days Of Summer
    The Hangover
    Inglorious Basterds
    Invictus
    Precious
    Star Trek
    Up
    Up In The Air
    Watchmen

While many of you are, no doubt in shock that I didn't include The Hurt Locker in my list. I caught a showing of this film way back in August and wasn't very impressed. Also, while the films I listed are the films which moved me the most this year, I do not believe the Academy will nominate Star Trek or Watchmen. However, this is my "dream" list.

  92. Sherezade Patel

as if State of Play is not getting more votes, it was one of the best thrillers i've seen in a long time!

also it was SO hard to not pick ten, brad, you meanie :P

  93. Bradley Badder

    Top 5 Movies of 2009

    1. The Blind Side (Loved Bullock already, but this was a Shocker!)
    2. AVATAR (Blue People, made me Laugh)
    3. Up in the Air (Enjoyed this)
    4. A Single Man (Good Story)
    5. Crazy Heart (Jeff Bridges, Oscar Worthy as well as Bullock)

    Worst 3 Movies of 2009
1.Alvin and the Chipmunks 2(Cheesy and Kiddy, make it's money though)
2.Harry Potter 6 (Enjoyed but Let Down, Rushed whilst Shooting)
3.Jennifer's Body (Let me Down, Not so Bad, Just Big Dissapointment)

    The Good Ones

    The Propoal
    (500) Days of Summer
    Law abiding Citizen
    Zombieland
    The Ugly Truth
    Julie & Julia
    UP!

  94. EstherUK

I'm UK based not all of the films count as 2009 for me…so of the ones that are out

    My Top 5 are

    1. The Hurt Locker
    2. Moon
    3. The White Ribbon
    4. Fish Tank (my other – not sure if it had a US release)
    5. A Prophet

Fantastic Mr Fox just got edged out.

  95. Holly

Since you asked, my Top 5 (in no particular order)

The Hangover (this is my favorite movie of 2009)
    Extract
    Law Abiding Citizen
    Star Trek
Other: The Ugly Truth (I obviously like comedies and I loved the raunch factor in this one)

  96. Alex

Alright, seriously, who were the 132 people who voted for Gamer?!

  97. I've missed a lot of potential nominees (looking to correct that), so my rankings aren't quite complete…

    In order:
    1. Up in the Air
    2. Inglourious Basterds
    3. In the Loop
    4. Avatar
    5. The Blind Side

I'm shocked that In the Loop was beaten by X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is so far my third least favorite film of the year, and 2012, which I have literally no desire to see.

  98. John

    1. Star Trek
    2. The Hangover
    3. Inglourious Basterds
    4. Up
    5. District 9
    6. Orphan
    7. The Hurt Locker
    8. Precious
    9. Moon
    10. 500 Days of Summer

  99. John

I'm happy to see that the spammer only supports Gerard Butler's kick-ass guy movies and not his stale-ass romantic comedy.

  100. Elena

    My Top 5 :

    1. Law Abiding Citizen
    2. Gamer
    3. Other: The Ugly Truth (I am a Gerard Butler fan in case anyone fail to notice it)
    4. Star Trek
    5. The Blind Side
