VIDEO: Paul Giamatti Wants to Play Rhino in 'Spider-Man 2'

This is rather interesting. The Hollywood Reporter has a report that Paul Giamatti is in negotiations to play the Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and strangely enough, in a video posted back in March of 2011 (watch below), Giamatti was telling Conan O'Brien this was exactly the character he wanted to play.

As for the character, his actual name is Aleksei Sytsevich and he was a thug in the Russian mafia who underwent a series of chemical and radiation treatments to transform him after several months into the superhumanly strong agent for a collective of professional spies. The subsequent armor permanently bonded to his form, and was modeled after the hide of a rhinoceros.

The one thing I'm trying to figure out here is whether this will be a set up for a third Spider-Man film or if Sony and director Marc Webb are already making the same mistake that was made with Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, which was to wedge as many villains in as possible. Jamie Foxx is already set to play the main villain, Electro, and there are rumors Dane DeHaan, who plays Harry Osborn, may actually be seen as the Green Goblin in the new movie.

In addition to the Giamatti news, Felicity Jones is in talks for an undisclosed role.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2014 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley, Dane DeHaan and Martin Sheen. Check out the video of Giamatti on Conan directly below.

Paul Giamatti as The Rhino sounds like a good idea to me. But I thought Jamie Foxx was going to play Mysterio. Are they both going to be in the movie now or something?

    • Andrew

Jamie is supposed to play Electro.

This is quite possibly the worst casting news I have ever heard. Wow, this is bad.

    • Susan

Why do you find it so bad? I quite like it personally, for I find the character and actor both worthwhile. Rhino in the comics is often sullen; less the insane or genius villain often done in the superhero universe. Giamatti seems a good fit for that.

Are you telling me that when you hear "Russian mobster turned giant BUFF rhino-man hybrid" you think of Giamatti?

        • John Debono

I love Giamatti and am happy for him if this is a childhood dream, but he is so horribly wrong for the role. Unless they turn the Rhino into a frustrated 40 something intellect with a passion for wine and literature, I do not see it working.

It won't be long before Jeremy Irons & Daniel Day-Lewis start making superhero movies.

    • Orhan94

Well, Jeremy Irons is no stranger to hamming it up in awful genre-movies ("Dungeons and Dragons", "Eragon") so "Amazing Spider-Man 3" could be the logical next step for him... but what should he play Dock Ock? Mysterio? Vulture?
And you know a Nolan-esque dark and introspective reboot of any franchise could, and probably should star DDL - Spider-Man, Daredevil, Catwoman...

    • Jarrod

Yeah, because NO Oscar-nominated or winning actor has ever appeared in a superhero film. You know, I think Giamatti might be the first ...

  • Adu

The abundance of animal names for characters never ceases to amaze me.

  • KEN

I guess that they will try to assemble sinister six in the third The Amazing Spider-Man movie. So, introducing more than two new villains in the second installment would be inevitable.

  • JAB

Giamatti is definitely a fine actor. I'm not real familiar with Rhino, but it sounds intriguing.

This is exciting! At the end of the last film I had some predictions about where I thought they might be going with it. And now, after reading this, it definitely seems their taking the direction I thought (and hoped) they would. If this turns out to fall within the lines of what I'm predicting, and as long as its brought to to the screen with a lot of thought & ingenuity, then we're looking at the best Spider-Man film made this far and possibly one of the best superhero films as well. Also, love the way the cast is shaping up so far. Definitely keeping my eye on this one.
