'Big Mommas' rolls into fourth

If Unknown was rated R I would say I Am Number Four had a good chance at catching it at the box-office, but given both are PG-13 I'd say it's an uphill climb for the DreamWorks pic as Unknown has an early edge.

The Liam Neeson action thriller pulled in an estimated $6.7 million on Friday, which is likely to translate to a $20 million or so three-day weekend. This isn't to say DreamWorks's I Am Number Four will be far behind as the film's $6.2 million Friday will likely earn the film approximately $19 million for the weekend and it has the potential to jump ahead of Unknown, but I'm not counting on it.

Fox's Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son was the weekend's other new wide release and it was working against a downward trend for the franchise and a slew of negative reviews. Big Mommas made only $4.8 million on Friday, which will likely mean an approximate $13 million three-day. The film was bumped to the fourth slot by last weekend's number one, Adam Sandler's Just Go With It, which is looking at a 50% drop and a $15+ million three-day.

The bigger slide went to the Justin Bieber 3D doc, Never Say Never, which dipped 69% from last Friday and will hope for an $11 million weekend after $3.7 million on Friday.

I've included the complete Friday top ten below and will be here Sunday for a complete weekend wrap-up, on that will see The King's Speech become the fifth Best Picture nominee to crack the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office. It seems people really like this year's crop.

  1. Unknown – $6.7 million
  2. I Am Number Four – $6.2 million
  3. Just Go With It – $5.2 million
  4. Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son – $4.8 million
  5. Gnomeo and Juliet – $4.3 million
  6. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never – $3.7 million
  7. The King's Speech – $1.5 million
  8. The Roommate – $1.2 million
  9. The Eagle – $999,000
  10. No Strings Attached – $904,000

"Unknown" at least got across the board average reviews, while "Four" got almost all bad reviews. That makes the difference this weekend for #1.

Brad, with this numbers I believe Gnomeu and Juliet will win the 4-day weekend! In the 3-day weekend, Unknown will probably win by a very small margin.

How many kid's and parents really get off on President's day? It's not like MLK JR. day.

Most kids are off school on President's Day (hell, I'm off school on President's day), kids need something to do (and obviously someone needs to watch those kids). Remember that movies like Bridge to Terabithia, Percy Jackson & The Spiderwick Chronicles all opened on this same weekend & held well (or got a nice holiday bump) due to the holiday. I'm sure the same will help Gnomeo & Juliet.

Who would have thought that the movie would have an honest shot at $100 million domestic? Seriously.

      • President's Day has been a national holiday for much longer (1880s) than MLK Jr. Day. Actually the Federal holiday is called Washington's Birthday, although since it was moved to the 3rd Monday in February, it never occurs on George Washington's actual birthday, Feb. 22nd. Some states designate it President's Day to include Lincoln, whose Feb. 12th birthday is no longer celebrated as a separate holiday. When I was in high school (1980s), we had the whole week off, less any snow days we needed to make up for.

I finally saw a trailer for Unknown when I was at the cinema this evening – it looks fairly over the top. I'm not sure if I mean that in a good way yet.

I think Deadline was predicting there was also a theoretical possibility that Gnomeo and Juliet could actually steal the weekend, if it enjoys the same Saturday bump it did last weekend and the others don't.
