Universal Journey's into 'Dante's Inferno'
Another videogame based feature heads to hell
Variety has word Universal Pictures has brought in Dan Harris to adapt a feature film based on the Electronic Arts videogame "Dante's Inferno" which isn't due in stores until December 2009. The game is an action/horror in which players journey through the depths of hell, but the official game storyline reads like this:
An abducted soul. A lifetime of sins. A journey to the depths of despair. Based on the immensely influential classic poem, Dante’s Inferno takes you on an epic quest of vengeance and redemption through the Nine Circles of Hell. You are Dante, a veteran of the Crusades who must chase his beloved Beatrice and try to free her soul from Lucifer’s grasp. As your pursuit takes you deeper into the pits of Hell, you must battle ever more fierce and hideous monsters — while also facing your own sins, a dark family past, and your unforgivable war crimes.
The trailer for the game is embedded in the upper right of this article and an official site for the game is live with a message board and ordering information.
As for screenwriter Dan Harris he was part of the writing team for both X2: X-Men United and Superman Returns.

Universal is certainly taking a chance on this one.
The question is: if the game or the movie tanks, will it reflect poorly on the other?
"Ballistic: Ecks & Sever" (the one with Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu) was supposed to accompany a game (didn't happen) and a franchise of films (REALLY didn't happen), so this has already backfired once before.
Maybe they're just ticked they didn't get the rights to "Halo"?
@Hugo:
Actually, there's a funny story about the "Ecks vs. Sever" thing…they made two games, both for the Game Boy Advance called "Ecks vs. Sever"-one came out before the movie, one came out after the movie as a tie-in. So the movie had a game based tie-in, but was inself based on a video game…get it?
Um anyway, not important. "Dante's Inferno", even though it really has few similarities with the original source material (Dante as a warrior? Yeah, right), looks really fun. Maybe Universal can pull a "Beowulf" (depending on whether or not you liked that film) and make an oddly entertaining B-Movie inspired by "The Divine Comedy".
