COMMENTS

Plus Criterion releases Mathieu Kassovitz's 'La haine'

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: May 8, 2012

Before we get started here, I thought some of you may be interested in the fact you can buy the four film Coen Brothers' Blu-ray set from Fox for $24.99 right now, which includes Blood Simple, Fargo, Miller's Crossing and Raising Arizona. If you're interested, just click here to pick it up.

There's also an interesting ten-film John Wayne DVD collection featured in the "Even More" section of today's post.

Underworld: Awakening
Underworld: Awakening on DVD Blu-ray today
I like this film and they sent me the Blu-ray, but I haven't yet had a chance to watch it. All the Underworld films starring Kate Beckinsale I find quite fun. It's big, loud and dumb fun as far as I'm concerned and I don't really know if I make a special exception for this franchise over others, but based on how this one ends I do hope they go forward with one more, but as Underworld: Rise of the Lycans proved, Beckinsale's Seline must be involved.

La Haine (Criterion Collection)
I have not seen this 1995 film from director Mathieu Kassovitz and starring Vincent Cassel, Hubert Kounde and Said Taghmaoui, but the synopsis from Criterion makes me want to. Have a look...

Mathieu Kassovitz took the film world by storm with La haine, a gritty, unsettling, and visually explosive look at the racial and cultural volatility in modern-day France, specifically the low-income banlieue districts on Paris's outskirts. Aimlessly passing their days in the concrete environs of their dead-end suburbia, Vinz (Vincent Cassel), Hubert (Hubert Kounde), and Said (Said Taghmaoui) -- a Jew, an African, and an Arab -- give human faces to France's immigrant populations, their bristling resentment at their marginalization slowly simmering until it reaches a climactic boiling point. A work of tough beauty, La haine is a landmark of contemporary French cinema and a gripping reflection of its country's ongoing identity crisis.

The Vow
The Vow on DVD Blu-ray today
I haven't seen this and most likely never will unless I'm forced to watch it under protest, but you better believe the person that forces me to watch this had better count on watching something with subtitles that same night.

La Haine is pretty good. Although overall it is a serious subject matter, I was surprised by how much humor is actually in the movie. It's well worth checking out.

  2. Driver says:

Awakening was the best in the series, I´ll watch it again soon.
Its funny how the vow its on blu ray in the US, but it recently hit theaters in my country. Studios need to work in this stuff if they dont want piracy. But who cares, we are kind of a little market for movies anyway.
