Uh, Guillermo, Aragorn Wasn't In 'The Hobbit'

Non-story makes me nervous...

With every other movie site under the sun picking up on the latest Variety story in which Michael Fleming reports that Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) have all been contacted with regard to appearing in Guillermo del Toro's The Hobbit it made me a little nervous. The three are referred to as "three actors whose 'Lord of the Rings' characters also appear in the 'Hobbit'."

There, of course, is a problem with this statement considering Aragorn does not appear in "The Hobbit," which is why I am slowly beginning to think that while this film may end up being a visual marvel the attempts to alter the storyline and create a sequel out of… Well, out of what? May be a bad idea.

Del Toro is quoted saying, "We will all be involved in the script in some fashion but the exact definition is about a week away. I am all for keeping the actors who originated the parts, as much as availability and their willingness will allow."

Okay, that's cool and it makes sense. So Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Serkis as Gollum and boom, you're done.

Bilbo is, of course, younger and Ian Holm won't work this time around, no worries. Oh, and I am sure Hugo Weaving wouldn't mind reprising Elrond (he is in "Hobbit" right?), but beyond that don't go creating roles were there are none, and forget this silly sequel business.

I want Del Toro to make his one Hobbit movie and then get back to making Del Toro style movies such as Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone. Don't you?

I'm sure Aragorn will just be in the second movie, not in The Hobbit. And I'm not sure, but I don't think Elrond is in The Hobbit.

I'm not big on this whole second movie deal, but I can't wait for The Hobbit movie.

Absolutely, there is no mention of Aragorn in The Hobbit (read it for the 4th time just last week!). However I had a feeling they were gonna do something like this. I'm still gonna be optimistic and say they can put Aragorn's character to good use, how? I'm not sure. Though I think the hint is that he'll have a big part to play in the second film.

Just to correct you, Elrond is in fact in The Hobbit, though his part is quite minimal, and could be taken out.

In an early draft, Strider was a hobbit.

    But now he's not.

It would horribly alter the story line if Aragorn were to show up, even in a cameo, looking 10 years older (sorry Viggo!) than at the end of the Trilogy. If you look at the glossary in the back of the third book it shows Aragorn to be about nine or ten years old. He's still called Estel and is 12 years from leaving Rivendell. However, it would be cool if he showed up as a dark-haired child with un-pointed ears in the scene were they arrive in Rivendell.
