Two New Pictures from 'Star Trek Into Darkness'

Kirk chats with Harrison and Spock

Chris Pine and Benedict Cumberbatch in Star Trek Into Darkness

Paramount is using their Star Trek mobile application (find it here) to keep fans busy looking for new content related to the upcoming sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. Today it's turned up two new images featuring Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock and Benedict Cumberbatch as the film's villain, John Harrison (or Khan if you don't believe in mistakes).

Neither of the new images give away any kind of valuable information or even look all that interesting, which makes me wonder why fans would even bother with such things considering all will soon be released online without any sort of Easter Egg hunt, but such is the nature of fandom and the Internet and I guess crushing all over your favorite film franchise is better than a lot of alternatives.

As for Star Trek Into Darkness, it will hit theaters on May 17. Here's the synopsis followed by the second new picture.

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man (Benedict Cumberbatch) weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
