First Official Pictures from Steve McQueen's 'Twelve Years a Slave'

Arriving in December

Fox Searchlight is finally lifting the lid and bringing us some official first look pictures from Steve McQueen's Twelve Years a Slave.

The film is based on the 1853 autobiography of Solomon Northrup with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the lead role, telling of Northrup's tragic kidnapping in Washington DC in 1841 where, despite being born a free man, he was forced into slavery at a Louisiana cotton plantation until his rescue 12 years later.

Ejiofor is joined by an impressive cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Brad Pitt, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson Alfre Woodard, Michael Kenneth Williams, Quvenzhané Wallis and Lupita Nyong'o (pictured in the second to last photo), whom I've been told is quite great in the film.

Many, myself included, thought the film would show up at the Cannes Film Festival considering it has already been screened for test audiences and been rated by the MPAA, but with a December 27 release date set, we may be lucky to see it in Toronto, Telluride or Venice.

Check out the new photos (via USA Today) directly below.

Can't wait for this one. Steve McQueen is a force to be reckoned with.

McQueen is a great visionary, but I find the stories he tells a little lackluster. Shame was a beautiful mess for me. Either way I'm still looking forward to this.

This is gonna get a lot of recognition at the Oscars I bet

Powerful stark imagery, some comforting, others debilitated. The agonized and convulsed face of Ejiofor on the first frame is gut-wrenching. Fassbender appears as a consolidating figure of support, while Cumberbatch's figure looms menacingly. Expect some Oscar nominations for this feature, acting categories, directorial and perhaps picture. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this.

I read somewhere from someone who's seen the film. His description was "It's as brutal as Django Unchained but without all the laughs"

I can't wait for this. I'm glad Ejiofor is gettin the attention he deserves, he's such an underrated actor. I like Steve McQueen, he's someone to look out for. Such a great cast involved too.

Really excited to see this one and looking forward to the trailer later in the week. The cast is excellent- I'm happy to see Sarah Paulson in a big film like this. She's great in "American Horror Story" and I loved her in "Martha Marcy May Marlene."
