But I still see 'Inception' as the Oscar front-runner

True Grit

In a night of technical awards we have our second as the Cinema Audio Society awarded True Grit for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing besting fellow nominees The Social Network, Black Swan, Inception and Shutter Island. When comparing to the Oscar nominees, neither Black Swan or Shutter Island were nominated, instead replaced by The King's Speech and Salt.

In other categories, "Temple Grandin", "Boardwalk Empire", "Deadliest Catch: Redemption Day" and 30 Days of Night: Dark Days were also awarded along with Taylor Hackford who was named the 2011 CAS Filmmaker Award Honoree.

As far as those of you looking to make Oscar predictions it's a tough one. I currently have Inception as my prediction to win with True Grit in second. However, since this is a night where True Grit was awarded I'll give you the True Grit Soundworks Collection feature below and make you click here if you want to explore Inception. Or even here if you want to explore the mix for The Social Network, a personal favorite of mine in the sound department.

I've added the win for True Grit to the Oscar Overture. Head over there for a complete snapshot of the awards already handed out leading up to next Sunday's Oscars.

Do you have the stats comparing this and Oscar winners?

I figure both sound categories are between Inception and True Grit…maybe they split, with True Grit winning mixing and Inception winning editing? Obviously I want Inception to win as many Oscars as possible, even if they are technical ones, so I really hope it doesn't end up walking out of there with only a win for visual effects.

Yeah, I have Inception for both right now. It will be interesting to see which direction the Motion Picture Sound Editors go. I should have those results by the end of the day.

Brad, may be this post isnt the right place to ask, but i will try, so whats your bet on best foreign picture, i saw your prediction on incendies, but why? why not in better world or dogtooth? sorry for disturbing you

I will be talking about this a bit later in the week, but I am beginning to sway toward In a Better World, primarily due to the fact Susanne Bier is a known filmmaker, not to mention the film is great. Incendies was a pick of the moment based on buzz, but it hasn't seemed to gain much more since. Dogtooth is just too "out there" for it to win in my estimation.
