So apparently Johnny Depp is retiring soon, but not before he stars in Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Alice in Wonderland 2 and Wally Pfister's Transcendence, the latter of which is the topic of conversation here as ScreenCrush has gotten their hands on the first official synopsis for the film:

Will Caster (Johnny Depp), forefather of A.I., has his consciousness uploaded onto the Internet.

Once there, is it really Will who is interacting with humanity in order to make things better, or a darker sinister clone bent on the termination of the world as we know it?

This is a little more specific in ways and not so much in others as the description we had before, which said Depp's character was murdered by anti-technology terrorists, but his wife (Rebecca Hall) uploads his brain into the supercomputer he created, allowing him the ability to communicate through it and continue conducting his research.

It would seem this "supercomputer" is in fact the Internet, but for the most part it seems we now have a pretty good idea of what to expect once the film hits theaters on April 18, 2014.

As for the picture of Pfister, Hall and Paul Bettany on the set, that arrives via The Film Stage.

Sounds confusing as hell, but not in a bad way. Will be interesting to see how Pfister transitions from a cinematographer to a director. I bet there will be an undeniable Nolan influence on his style.

It's sad to see that's Depp's career might end on such a low note (if he really does retire), but if it saves me from numerous incarnations of the same character, then good riddance. As for this, my interest is high, but I can't say I love the concept. Hopefully Pfister can impress me.

Cheesy sounding synopsis as written but shall see how things look as they emerge.

Wouldn't at all miss Depp if he retired though.

I am actually excited for this film mainly because Cilian Murphy stars in it

Perhaps his decision to do the second POTC was the first indication that things weren't right with Depp, he doesn't seem like a money person so perhaps he's just fallen out of love with acting and needs a break.
I do remember a time when i thought he was the greatest working actor and i respected his decision for choosing smaller, more interesting roles, maybe he'll return to that one day.
As it stands he may as well retire as he's not contributing to the films that i enjoy.

I'm very intrigued by the plot for this film. Johnny Depp has tried to disappear into so many roles of late (Pirates, Alice, Lone Ranger) it makes since that he'll actually disappear for this one. Can't wait for the trailer.

    Thems the facts
