October 28 will see the release of The Rum Diary, an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's first novel starring Johnny Depp as Paul Kemp, a roaming journalist who travels to Puerto Rico to work for the San Juan Star, and soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), a wildly attractive fiancee of shady local businessman Hal Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). The film also stars Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Rispoli and Richard Jenkins. Bruce Robinson (Withnail & I) directs.

As I mentioned a little over a week ago, the film has been in motion for about eight years after first being announced back in 2003 and filming finally beginning in March of 2009, and now we finally have the first trailer. Give it a watch below and leave your thoughts in the comments.

Was the delay in getting it to audiences a result of the film's quality or do you see something special here?

The Rum Diary tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late '50s version of Hemingway's "The Lost Generation," Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman, Chenault (Heard) and her fiancée Sanderson (Eckhart), a businessman involved in shady property development deals. It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.

looks awesome, can't wait, maybe we'll be going back to the good old johnny depp.

Well worth the wait. at one point Benicio Del Toro was attached to the project; seeing him in a small role for the hell of it, would've been cool.

It's difficult to get a real feel for it based on this trailer – quality-wise this could go either way. But there is no way in hell I am missing Johnny Depp in an interesting role as directed by the director of Withnail and I!

Yeah I definitely get a bit of a Hunter S. Thompson vibe from that. Depp is a talented guy, he's just been taking on crappy roles lately (Public Enemies is probably his best of the last several years). I don't see anything earth-shattering here, but it definitely looks like it could be fun, particularly if he brings back a bit of that Raoul Duke persona.

Amber Heard is lovely, gorgeous, sexy and beautiful. She's amazing. That woman is incredible.

Damn. This could be brilliant. The trailer was pretty amazing. Johnny Depp at his crazy best, probably.

I'm looking forward to this movie… and I like the fact that it based on a story that predates Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (I think that he wrote The Rum Diary long before Fear and Loathing, but it didn't get published till just a few years prior to his death… I could be wrong about that though)… because it'll showcases the younger, not quite drug addled, version of the Hunter S. Thompson alter ego ala Paul Kemp, this time around, rather than Raoul Duke… I have the book and have thumbed through it, but have yet to read it… I might just need to do that before seeing the movie… And I love the fact that Depp appears to be talking with the "Hunter S. Thompson" inflection in his voice again… adding to the semi-continuity of the two different versions of the Thompson persona…

That might be the best trailer I've seen all year. I liked the book a lot so hopefully the movie is as good as it looks here.

  13. I’m very anxious to see Depp embody the good doctor again! Thompson influenced the past few generations with his invention of Gonzo Journalism. His work and antics will live on to influence even more generations to come. I paid tribute to Hunter S Thompson and his work with my portrait and article on my artist's blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/02/in-memoriam-hunter-s-thompson.html

  14. Vince (Not Vance)

Looks absolutely fantastic. The most excited I've ever been for a film starring Johnny Depp in a long, long, long, long time.

  15. It's a piece of shit. Chenault never been fiance of Anderson, where the hell is Addison?

Why did they correct the book??(((((

    I'm so sad((((((

Okay, last clip had me cracking up.

Also, Johnny Depp has really mastered the whole clipped speech thing, unfortunately. I hate it when actors work themselves into a trademark quirk ala Pacino.

  17. this trailer is inappropriately interesting! totally sold the movie!

    i'm IN! :)
