I could have already seen Amir Bar-Lev's The Tillman Story as it was playing at the Seattle International Film Festival, but it was only three days after my return from Cannes and I needed some serious rest and a downer documentary just wasn't in the cards.

The film, as I'm sure most of you know or can surmise from the title, centers on Pat Tillman, who gave up his football career in the NFL to join the Army in 2002 and was killed in combat in 2004 in Afghanistan. As the government tried to turn his death into propaganda, Pat's family, lead by his mother Dannie, has set out to reveal the truth.

I have already heard a lot about this film from some people that did see it at SIFF and they really liked it and it sounds like a great feature, and perhaps not as much of a downer as I expected it to be. The film hits theaters on August 20 and the just released trailer can be watched directly below.

I can't wait to see this, I hope it gets distribution in Chicago.

    • 3rd grouper

Why? The whole movie is bullshit, every fucking word of it! He didn't die in Afghanistan fighting the enemy, he died by his own guys and the government covered it because enlistment numbers in the Army would fall dramatically.
Read the exposed forensic reports, they will tell you he was executed point blank by 5.56 NATO, the same rounds that are powering standard issued M4s used by the Army today. The placing of the 3 shots at point blank in his forehead, the funny part about that is that there was no engagement with the enemy that particular day.
In addition, I do not believe that he deserves all the kudos that the public is giving him. What about Douglas Logan Tinsley, Joseph Strong, Steven Benish Paul Pena, or Jeremiah J Johnson? You probably never heard of these guys as they weren't all doped up by the media, and I can personally guarrantee that they gave more than Pat Tillman. A multimillion dollar NFL contract doesn't mean dick, these deceased individuals gave up families, friends, and not to mention their lives.
The bottom line is, one swinging dick is just as big as another.
I am tired about hearing how Pat Tillman died fighting the taliban, the guys that were there that day deliver a very different story.

      • HELLO

This movie is about investigating a possible cover up, did you even watch the trailer?

      • Ken

Good God! You really should think before you type!! Open Mouth, insert your entire leg.

      • By this point you're probably tired of all of the people that have recognized that you don't even know what you're talking about. I read the book that his mother wrote "Boots On The Ground" explaining all of the cover up she endured for months. Even his family did not ask for him to be acknowledged as a hero when he was actually shot by his fellow soldiers. Do you think Pat Tillman wanted all this hoopla and wanted to be made a hero? I'm sure he'd rather be here, but when you enlist, those are the chances you take. And Pat Tillman took them. He didn't ask for favoritism, even though he never had to enlist. You don't get that what he did, when he enlisted, was completely out of keeping with what 90% or more of other Americans would do. He did sacrifice, ultimately, to be able to say that he didn't turn his back on his country when many others just went on, with their every day lives after 9/11/01. Look in the mirror buddy. Could you have done that if you were in the same place he was?

      • jumper72

What kind of a jerk are you to write these things. No matter who dies, it's horrible. The fact that Pat gave up a career in the NFL does put him a step above others, as he gave up what most every red blooded man in the USA for die for….the chance to start in the NFL.
Yes, its a shame he died, but he did not have to be there. He had everything going for him,and gave it all for his country.

      • Bryan

You are a moron. You go read the documentation of what went on that day and check your facts dumbass.

      • Kelly

WOW 3rd Grouper, you have a very hard heart. Tilly's enlisted in Colorado away from AZ for that simple fact he didn't want the media… it is not his nor his families fault that the media went after him and his brother. We all are aware of how the media can behave…. All of this was handled very wrong. As far as the other soldiers that you brought up and the many more that were killed… it is all very sad and disturbing. I believe the purpose of this movie is to have 'A' story told… the content of the lies and betrayal that were told to the world is a disgrace… sadly it was Tilly's death that 'had' to be the one to be told. The truth is, we don't know how many other soldiers have died due to the brutial so called 'friendly fire'… but because of Tilly's death, and the fact he was a celebrity, maybe and hopefully the military will be held accountable and will fight towards truth and justice for all of those precious lives that have been lost due to flat out murder.
You 3rd Grouper, someday something in your life will change that hard heart of yours and I hope and pray that you will become more compassionate and more kind when you decide to write your cynical and hateful comments so the poor and heartache filled family that lost the one they loved will read. Shame on you for your hatefulness.

      • mike

        You're an idiot!!! Enough said….

      • chalin

3rd grouper your a dumbass! The movie IS about the cover and how it was by friendly fire not the enemey! And to your comment on what all those guys you looked up gave up…..they are heroes too, but Tillman gave up a very desirable life along with a family, friends and his life too dipshit! You sound like a bitter bitch who hates the world and feels sorry for yourself! Did you do something worth praise and not get it???? How sad. Grow up and get over whatever it is that makes you so bitter you pussy!!!!!

      • ott

3r Grouper- Get a freakin clue you moron….that is the whole point of movie. You owe the entire Tillman family an apology for such ill informed comments!

      • Steve

You are a complete ignorant idiot, Pat Tillman was a true American hero, the other people you mentioned are as well but keep your mouth shut until you know what you are talking about.

      • TeeTee

I totally agree I am sick of the damn Tillman story. He gave up his football career to join the Army as a publicity stunt that back fired in his face.

      • DT

You have no idea what you're talking about.

      • DT

Pat Tillman was a very intelligent man and an amazing person. He probably had the smallest ego in the NFL and wanted nothing more than to have a new experience and serve his country in the process. We could all learn something from a man like him. Small time idiots like grouper and teetee decide to talk nonsense because you are very small people and have most likely done nothing with your lives beyond your own selfishness and entitlement. Grow up and find something better to do with your time than slander people whom you know nothing about. Your parents would probably like it if you moved out of the basement and stopped using up all their bandwidth also.

      • Nate from Knoxville

What a freaking loser you are bud. The fact is that the only person no one cares about is you. I love all of our troops and thank every single one of them for their service to our country. Whether they are my life long friend that went to Iraq 3 times, my high school classmate, Pat Tillman (my favorite football player of all time), or someone that I have never met. You obviously know nothing about this subject and are a moron, so I won't even waste my breathe or typing on you. But, I will thank our troops all of them and their families..

      • @Group3

Hey group3 shut your fucking mouth. you don't know a god damn thing about Pat. Why the fuck would you insult a man that sacrificed his freedom and laid himself on the line especially for shitty people like you. There are too many people like you around that don't have a fucking clue. Respect Pat Tillman and what he did. There is not a better person in this world than Pat. So shut the fuck up

      • B

You have no clue what you are talking about 3rd grouper… The movie tells about how he was killed by friendly fire. You are probably some little fag that used to get beat up in school. Save your bullshit blogs you fag.

      • Steve

It makes me sad that you are so filled with hate. It is my prayer that some day you will come to a knowledge of the truth.

      • i guess everyone can read or see something and come away with a different opinion.
what is amazing about pat tillman is he could recognize his errors and learn from them. this made him able to grow as a human being.
Pat Tillman was well read, educated, and played football well.that's rare!
Pat Tillman was against the war in Iraq, however he felt a duty to his country that was under attack.
Pat Tillman joined without any fan fare or press conference.
the public gives him kudo's because he is a great human being that gave his freedom, without fanfare, so we can live in freedom.
you believe all the hype from the media and the propaganda from the military. that was exactly what Pat Tillman was trying to avoid. it's people like you that get sucked in allowing yourself to miss the facts and the true story. sadly you are like many people, happy to live a lie.
how do i know this? i read books like WHERE MEN WIN GLORY.

      • rackers

3rd grouper the movie is to show that he was killed by his own men you dumb shit

      • Brian

3rd group, Pat Tillman was a man that i can really admire.
Having been in the military,I can tell you that there are so many people that talk about getting out to pursue their athletic endeavors etc. Most would give anything to not just be a pro player but a dam good one.Tillman gave all of that up becuase he felt that it wasnt fair that he was given that pass. How many people have intentionally given up a career such as his to fight a war?

      • andrew

let the man rest in peace!

      • Andy

did you even watch the trailer? It is about his family trying to expose the cover up not glorify him. You obviously have come to this with your own pre concieved ideas!

      • Joe Cohen

        Good for you 3rd Grouper!
Too many people just go along with the crap they are fed and think it HAS to be the truth. There are many of us that are sick of hearing how Tillman has been elevated to hero statis from proaganda and others that want to give his death some meaning.

    • Jake

Yea, lets talk about the big bad government rather than the man himself. Reguardless of what the military did after his death doesn't change how he died. This movie looks to me like its all about what happened after he die. Why not make a movie about the life of Pat Tillman? Now I would be the first in line for that but instead we now have a Michael Moore type film. There is going to be alot of disappointed people if they show up to see a movie about Pat Tillman and have to sit through this bullshit. People act surprized that how he died was covered up. He was a high profile man that died from friendly fire. Its about morale for the troops and public relations, politicians do it everyday.

    • 3rd GROUPER? How about BOTTOM FEEDER!! When did you hear the Bumble Bee last? Or ever? Just to walk one step towards the oposition takes more guts than you obviously have. The Kudo's? You dick. My SON was killed in Afghanistan when AAT's tried to over run his COP. A direct hit from an 82mm and stuck to life for 1hr and 58 minutes and his last words that his fellow soldiers/friends would not get hurt. Just as Pat Tillman would have done given the chance. Just because it happened that way it did, DID NOT diminish the fact that he had been out there many times before that day. So were YOU there? That day or any day? Or pissed off because you got turned down AGAIN when trying to join the local Girl Scouts. You piece of work. EVERY soldier who walked through the wire, whether they came home breathing or not, deserve the best we can give. Then AND now. Not a load of after-the-fact shit cast on their commitment that got them there in the first place by dirtbags like YOU. But, you know what, Pat Tillman would forgive you. That's what Pat Tillman is about also.

3rd grouper. you are a dirty m.f. the audacity of no doubt an out of shape loser is mind-boggling. leave nationality out of this. Pat Tillman is just a GREAT human being! the sacrifice he made hoping to make a difference is astounding. 3rd gouper the la

      • kurt

sacrifice you have ever made. was deciding to masturbate with your left hand, because the box if twinkies was on your right.

    • Brad

Before this gets carried away, I would like to begin this by saying I was a huge Pat Tillman fan. What he accomplished with limited athletic ability was remarkable. Now for the hard part. I am a pragmatist. The bottom line is Pat Tillman made a very risky and unwise decision to place himself in harms way by joining the army. Their is a very good reason why traditionallyy the armed services wouldnt allow celebrities in combat. Should anything happen to them, it would hurt the war effort. Lets face it, if the public sees its heroes dying, it makes them think it could happen to them, it hurts recruiting, etc.
Tillman made a selfish, one-sided decesion. It wasnt for his country, his family, or anyone else except for himself. If he really wanted to do something to help he wouldnt have jeapordized his own life, which in the end hurt the war effort by his dying, and would have stayed in the NFL and payed his high taxes to help pay for the war. Lets face it, with his tax bracket he could have helped the war effort in a way that no other enlisted person could have. Somebody should have talked some sense into Pat because in the end he accomplished exactly the opposite of which he wanted. Rest in peace, I'm still a fan.

The trailer gave me goosebumps. How anyone can defend the bullshit that was fed by those with "poor memories" is beyond me. Hopefully this will get some great distribution and some major awards consideration later in the year.

  3. hooah4life

3rd grouper have you even watched the trailer? this movie is about exposing the DOD cover up. everyone is well aware that Pat's death was by his guys own hand, whether it was an accident or a murder we will never know. as far as your piss poor attitude towards Pat's sacrifice, how does the media storm from his enlistment and death take away from your friends sacrifices? simple answer, it doesn't. you may not think that his walking away from a million dollar NFL contract means anything, but if you ask me this is the absolute embodiment of the American spirit. we give up privileges and comforts to do what is right. while there are many who gave a lot, including their lives, Pat will continue to inspire because he gave up such a life of comfort to do what most people would never do. you embarrass all of us, prior and current, with your insensitive comments regarding an American hero. i can imagine that you are the same kind of guy I always saw when I was at Bragg, airborne bumper sticker, infantry bumper sticker, and probably a SF bumper sticker. do us all a favor and shut your mouth with regards to Pat. try and live up to the "Quiet Professional" mantra, so far you are failing.

    • ott

      Amen to that Hooah4life!

    • M.K.

If you went to bragg thats where SF is. so either you were or are SF or higher ranking so you stopped there for something, but what did you mean the kind of guy and bumper stickers? what did you mean by that … 3rd grouper feels like total shit now. everyone just shot him down lol good shit people.

  4. Rob

If you are tired of hearing what is happening to our men and women who serve, then you should move out of the country. I don't understand why you would not see the trailer while commenting how you are soooo tired of hearing about it. This movie is about exposure and for you to decide for yourself. Let me enlighten you, all men and women who serve is important and Tillman gets no bonus points with me for being a NFL player or rich. However did you ever think for one sencond that is not what this is about. The media doesn't report the truth of the war on a constant basis. You think a free country means free press, think again. We are lied to constantly by the press, and military, and if exposing one case causes people to ask questions then so be it. If this is the case run as much as you can with the press you get. Maybe just maybe the rest of the unfortunite soliers who died by friendly fire will get some answers. This is a memory of tillman and how he would like to be remembered and as well answers for the loved ones left behind. This film is more about the family then Tillman. You think Tillman cares if you know the truth at this point (he would if he was alive)! It is truely about the family he leaves behind, they want to know how he died and expose the truth to help others. Most of all it is about leaving a TRUE memory of someone that you love that is giving and caring, and understanding the need to help. These people fight there so that they don't bring it here, get it yet!??? Don't put down people when you are not willing to enlist yourself and stand proud with your brothers in arms!

    • Rob

I personally don't know what I will learn from the film other then a unanswered cover up, but I'm still going to see it. I think it is a sad day in history when it will be released. Simply because it is truely sad to go to the theaters just to know the truth of the story of tillman and what is going on over seas. Especially when it is a factual based film to expose, not "based on a true story" that is so blown out to a saving private ryan movie. I only wish they all could return safe.

Posted On July 10th, 2010 at 1:08 pm in reply to Rob.
    • Mike K.

Ok, please help me out. What is this movie trying to say? that tillman was killed by his own men because he was shooting at them? last i remember was hearing tillman got confused and shot at friendlies thinking they were tangos but im not positive it was so long ago. please message me back and clear this up for me. please.

  5. Kathy Meyerson

3rd Grouper – You are an uneducated moron. What on earth would possess you to take the time to leave a comment about a trailer you obviously never even watched about a subject you obviously know nothing about. Why don't you shut your mouth and open your mind.

  6. george Floyd

I have not seen the film, but I have read about Pat and what he thought of the bullshit bush was doing. Taking people from Afghaistan and sending them to Iraq for the new war bush wanted. Pat was going to come back to the US and campaine for John Carey. He was going to tell all how bush and his crime buds were trying to fix the truth about what going on in Afghanistan. Then what happnes, Pat gets killed, no murdered to keep him from talking. He is not the only one who was murdered. there have been several people in the military who have, lets say been silenced. After all this lying from the goverments top people, how can any one trust the military or the people in the goverment to tell any TRUTH!

  7. freedomofmaneuver

If you haven't gotten a chance, I highly reccomend you read the book "where men win glory" by Jon Krakeur (SP?). He does a good bit of investigative journalism going all the way from Pat's childhood, up to the events of that fateful day, followed by the attrocities committed against him and his family. Testimony and the book state that his brother's seperate element was engaged while they trailed Pat's convoy through a narrow ravine. When it came under fire, Pat, a fellow Soldier, and an Afghan Soldier took up a position to provide what we call "overwatch" for his brother's section as it moved out of the ravine. Due to adrenaline from the engagement, a plethora of bad decisions, and the unfortunate mistake of confusing a BDU clad ANSF Soldier standing by Tillman, a vehicle escaping from the ravine repeatedly engaged the hilltop (killing Tillman and the ANSF Soldier) but also critically wounded several other Soldiers, including their platoon leader. Read the book with a grain of salt and you can make your own decision about an unfortunate incident that was exacerbated by Military and Government leadership.

    • Cat

I just started reading this book yesterday and it is fascinating. I have learned more about the current conflict in Aghanistan than I imagined. I wasn't expecting it as it isn't promoted as a book about the war, but of Pat Tillman's life and subsuquent death. I recommend everyone read "where men win glory" to have a more indepth understanding of what our military is facing today.

  8. Sharon

If you tell his story tell all the soldiers story.
Just because he gave up millions they make him out to
be so special. This happened in every war.
I don't think it is right to have his story being told
when there are real soldiers who saved others lives.
    Where is their stories?
They are all heroes but why put just one story on he didn't
save anyone. Tell all their stories. So many are saving
so many lives not just their own men but men, women, children where are their stories.

    • Sharon W

Sharon you correctly Said it "they make him out to be so special" Pat Tillman asked for none of the fame and notariety. It's the media that determines what is covered and what isn't. It's NOT HIS CHOOSING, so stop knocking Pat Tillman for the coverage. What you said, tell all the soldiers story, is impossible. There are hundreds of stories out there, but we control what is read as individuals and obviously, no one is reading "all the others' stories" You can't will everyone to be famous because they sacrificed in the war. I am a soldier myself. No one knows who I am and I don't care. Soldiers don't need to be recognized just for dying. Many are living through horrible situations. This story is just bringing to light one of the many stories of injustices that happen. They are all heroes. And if you really care to read their stories, just go to a library and you can read many of them. They're out there. But I'm sure you don't really want to read them.

Posted On August 13th, 2010 at 4:58 am in reply to Sharon.
    • mike

Sharon…. Wake up, I hear ya but do u think we can honestly write a book on every soldier, sailor, airmen and Marine who serves. Pat Tillman was a great story in the fact that how many other high paid athletes do u know of that said screw the millions send me to war?????Tillman did that because he loved his country,if u want more stories pick up a book, watch the discovery channel, dont piss on this heroes parade he didn't ask for this the media took the ball he left behind picked it up and ran with it. I'm a former Marine who served in Bosnia and Iraq and I can tell u that no man or woman who serves this country gives a rat ass about having their stories told, but those of us that can make an impact on society deserve it with out idiots like u and the others in this country that have nothing respectful to say… God Bless You Pat!!!!

  9. Sharon

    Sharon W

Oh please, all I said was there are so many others who
have saved lives. Where are their stories, of course our
military are very special people, and they sacrifice so much. They all are Heroes!
I never said to make them famous I said to tell other's
stories if Tillman's family and everyone are going to tell
his story well there are other soldiers stories that I would rather hear about. Don't tell me what I want to read
    or not read.

  10. Sharon

One thing we can all agree on is they covered up his death.
His parents should have been told the truth. He was serving
our country. It was wrong for them not to be told what
happened to their son. He is a hero and all of our
men and women in uniform are heroes.
I was making a statement is one more important than another!
    My opinion is NO!

  11. I have read and believe both Jon Krakower's and Mary Tillman's books regarding the legacy and fratricide of Pat Tillman. As a 78 year old volunteer veteran of the US Army during part of the Korean War I have experienced the dishonesty of ambitious West Point Officers like Stanley McChrystal. Truman fired the out of line Mac Arthur and LBJ (I believe) got rid of Westmoreland. I am looking forward to seeing the documentary about Pat Tillman. I was glad to see President Obama realize his mistake in putting McChrystal in charge of the war
in Afghanistan and to correct that mistake effectively. I hope I live to see the next four years. I want America and President Obama to succeed.

  12. jimf.fremont, ca

pat had a career he and his brother put aside there personal lives on hold to give what they had fortunately only one had died , the altimate sacrifice was given , lets just pray that this event does not strike another family again .

  13. Wil

Does Pat Tillman's death deserve all the publicity? I will let you be the judge. If you think there isn't any kind of cover up in the military or the government, you are wrong. The family and friends of these deceased Soldiers deserve the truth. That is the bottom line. The Army preaches about the Army values all the time; loyalty, duty, selfless service, respect, integrity, honor, and personal courage. But when you wear the brass on your shoulder, you worry more about your career than doing the right thing. What kind of leadership is that?

Yes, other deceased Soldiers wtih similar treatment from the military deserve as much publicity and recognition as Pat Tillman. However, Pat Tillman's story breaks that ice and let the rest of the country acknowledge what kind of shady cover up operation the military is running.

Sadly, I feel that this will go nowhere. The government and the military will do however they see fit because nobody is going to hold anybody accountable.

    • TeeTee

I totally agree that not only the Tillman story deserves the truth but EVERY family needs to know the truth about what happened to their loved ones.

i may be wrong but 3rd grouper sounds like a guy who has been there and has seen his buddies die in combat. i can identify with him. i hope he can find some help with the feelings, the frustrations, the helplessness and the anger that seem to be eating him up.
he sounds like a lot of vets i know, i'm one also. i bear no ill will toward tillman or his family but i do feel that sometimes all the attention goes toward a few. for example my buddies (241 of them) were killed on 10-23-83 by muslim extremists, how many of you even know what happened that day without looking it up? the point is the press only reports on the news that sells, regular joes don't sell papers or ad time on tv.

    • agrreeeed

Agreed, but here's the thing…we can either be upset that the media only takes these few examples to represent others whose names will never be known…oooor, we can be glad that these few examples exist. If not for the Pat Tillmans, would we ever really know what happens? Through Pat, I can imagine a lot of wrongdoings in this military, but it's only through his story that those other people get the recognition they deserve.

Embrace the Tillman's, they are representing thousands whose voices and stories go untold and unheard.

  15. Mark

If anyone sees this documentary and in at all surprised by a government cover-up, obviously has never heard of President Kennedy!

  16. Bobby

While most of us Americans do feel for every soldier that has sacrificed his life for the country ,I do feel that Pat Tillman's story is special and does deserve attention. How many of the thousands that have died in this war on terror were millionaires !!! In this day and age of low moral fiber, excessive greed and me me me me first mentality
Pat Tillman is a true American Hero !!

  17. GoDevils

As someone who was at ASU when Tillman was there and was in a few classes with him, I can only say it is so sad what happened to him. I never knew or spoke to Tillman, but he didn't carry himself like the typical ASU football player did. He tried to fit in with the student body and didn't want special priviledges. He was a great Sun Devil and almost took ASU football to the promise land in 1996 – a National Championship. He followed the '97 season by earning Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year. The Arizona Cardinals drafted for good PR when they were dreadful. He led the Cards in tackles and never made excuses. It's ashame Tillman fought a war that was based on nonsense. 9/11 was a scam and Tillman's death was scam too. Tillman being in the military drew unwanted attention to what was going on over in the middle east. It was rumored that Tillman was critical of the "War on Terror" and that it was all BS. It was suspected that Tillman was considering returning to the Cardinals when he was done serving. Tillman was a no nonsense guy who spoke the truth. The US Military couldn't take any chances on Tillman getting back to the US and having the platform to speak the truth he would have had. Tillman was murdered to keep the 9/11 myth alive. Tillman gave up everything b/c of 9/11 and to serve his country. Tillman's story proves the US Gov't and Military is a fraud. He was killed b/c of who he was. Sad and pathetic. God help us.

I read the first comment in this thread and it really pissed me off. I was prepared to fire off but decided to read on. I just want to thank all of you who followed and took care of it for me.

Regardless of all the nay-fucks, Pat Tillman will forever be different…not because he chose it for himself, he sought no attention! He declined all interviews so he could be as normal as any other soldier even though everyone else placed a marker on his back including the president of the US? Since he graduated tops in his class at ASU and in addition to his NFL prestige, I'm sure he could've chosen an easier military path? You know, travel the country and push the propaganda for war…But that wasn't his way. How can anyone say that a man who leaves the kind of lifestyle he had for sacrifice is nothing special? All you nay-fucks know what you'd have chosen had you been in his position financially, correct? He had the option to leave early based on his service in Iraq and return to the NFL, but he chose to finish his commitment. Again, just another sign of his character and make up (you nay-fucks would've bolted, right?). It is always harder to walk against the flow. When you go to work tomorrow, try moving in the opposite direction other than the one everyone else is heading? As you’re walking, realize that if you would just turn around there would be millions of dollars with your name on it? Which direction you gone choose? I know what I’d choose and that is why Pat Tillman will forever be my hero. He took the road less traveled and wanted nothing in return; however the media chose another path after his demise (not his fault). I played ball in college and can state without hesitation that I would never have given up what he had, no doubt! It is hard to imagine giving up all he had to fight for a country full of folks that now condemn his sacrifice, even his own brothers in arms? That’s one thing about playing on a team, regardless of the outcome; we always got each other’s backs. When you’re on a team, it don’t matter who scores to the TD’s, it matters what the score is? We will probably never see another Pat Tillman and it's a shame because he would've made the kind of leader this country really needs with great qualities such as honor, integrity, commitment, and the mental toughness to set the standard. I will forever lift up his name! "Live it like Pat!" 42

I feel sorry for all the young men and women that have given their lives or returned home with PTSD and illnesses that have not as yet been revealed, including this brave man.

But what I wanted to say is that it is not the fault of the military or the government. It is our fault that we allow individuals to start wars, to fight wars, and to send young men and women off to fight their wars.

IMHO, our reaction to 9-1-1 was an emotional one spurred on by a president who was a puppet to the war machine, the generals and the arms manufacturers. If we really wanted to get bin Laden, we should have sent special forces and mercenaries to take him and his allies out, with whatever means possible. As distasteful as it sounds to Americans, we need to take a page out of Israel's military tactics.

    Thank you.

I think the army did it to make Tillman a hero, so that others would want to join to fight. They tried to glamorize dying for your country but it came back to bite them in the ass because there's nothing glamorous about that, especially when your government is only waging war for oil and profiteering. On Bill Maher they said that 52% of all the casualties in the Gulf War have been from friendly fire. That's preposterous. We need to pull all of our troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq NOW.

Funny story about Iraq. While I was in Saudi Arabia preparing for the push into Iraq during the so called first Iraq war, someone at our headquarters unit was interviewing for promotion to Sergeant. When the interviewing panel asked him why we were in Iraq, he answered we were there because of oil! He was promoted because they don't look for answers that agree with anyone, they look for people who will speak up and can lead others. But we thought it was funny because most of us had the opinion that you just can't let countries go around invading other countries nowadays. That would be a huge step backward in our evolution to a more stable world.

Joining the U.S. Army is a sacrifice for anyone. Pat Tillman joining the Army highlights that Americans are still willing to make sacrifices including the ultimate sacrifice.

Compare that to when some Roman cities were falling to the Vikings for example. The armories would be well stocked with plenty of the latest and best weapons, but the Roman citizens, who far and away outnumbered the Vikings would flee. Their life was so comfortable that they didn't want to lose it or risk being disabled.

Pat Tilman is a hero who displayed the best qualities this country has to offer.

P.S. The ultimate reason Saddam invaded Kuwait was to take control of it's oil resources because he was having money problems. There was never any scenario that would have seen less oil flowing from the Middle East. Saddam had no intention of holding Kuwait oil off the market. And even if he did, the amount of oil held off the market would have been less that the oil production reduction that occured as a result of the war. So if the war was about oil, it would have been better to just do nothing. You might want to be less emotional and think things through more. Perhaps letting Bill Maher do your thinking for you is below standard as well.

Also, We ARE pulling out troops out of Iraq now. But pulling troop out of a country suddenly is a humanitarian mistake. All the people who got their way and had us pull our troops out NOW in Vietnam are personally responsible for the deaths of at least 3 million Vietnamese. Maybe you should read up on what were called the boat people (people desperately fleeing Veitnam, often dying at sea).

Afghanistan is a dog and pony show. Until the recent troop surge, there just weren't enough troops to do anything but stand around and garrison positions. The worst possible position to put the Army in. The Army is designed to move and destroy what is in it's path, not stand around waiting for yahoos to take shots at them at checkpoints. I agree we should pull out of Afghanistan, and unlike Iraq, our sudden departure wouldn't make the situation there a humanitarian crisis. If the Taliban did reestablish itself and become a significant base of operations for our enemies, it truthfully wouldn't be that hard to go in with some troops with air support and clean it out. Not hard militarily, but perhaps hard politically.

      • Kudos

Oh better yet I let some anonymous internet yahoo do my thinking for me. GMAFB. Are you saying Maher was wrong? Are you saying Tillman's brother, who he was interviewing when that number was mentioned, was wrong? If you were there, you must know. I see you neglected to mention anything about friendly fire. Hmmm, maybe because you're not as big of a free-thinker as you portray yourself, or a free-speaker for that matter. Bush and his family had major oil interests since long before the war. We supposedly went into Iraq because – according to Bush – Saddam was purchasing African uranium and was building nukes, which was one of the biggest lies ever told this country. Then he tried to say we were there to help the Iraqi people, this after dropping bunker busters on residential neighborhoods and killing a over 100,000 Iraqis since the war started. Humanitarian MY ASS. Our presence there has done nothing but stoke the fires of terrorism. You can't fight terrorism with terrorism. To think that, is moronic. Oh and by the way, I think for myself. You should try it sometime.

It sortof disgusts me. The third line in the trailer is his brother saying, "Sometimes, we just don't know how good we have it …" And, your first line is complaining that you're tired from running around Cannes, France?

1)You haven't seen the film but did you even watch the trailer?

    2) Pat Tillman wasn't killed in combat hence the entire problem here.

Maybe you should do your research … especially when it deals with a sensitive subject matter.

If you're too tired from traveling then just say, "Here is the trailer." Your intro makes no sense. You know people who have seen the film? WOW!!!!

It's offensive to so many people, I won't bother listing, by calling the documentary a "downer." What's wrong with you?

  23. Go PAT!!
He did a great job! Did what most people today wouldnt do and thats give up $$$$ to go and do what he actually believed in! Being ex-Army Airborne myself–I know what he went through and most of it wasnt very FUN!! And the pay sucked! My hat is off to him, he makes me PROUD to be an American! He is one of the few people I will remember and still respect when Im 80.. great job PAT–and your brother on Bill Mahrer did you Justice, loved it!! I will have a couple cold Becks Octoberfest tonight for you and your bro tonight!

I just saw "The Tillman Story" and I can't shake the suspicion that this was not a friendly fire accident, it was an assassination. Think about the facts. The Bush Regime was whoring Tillman's NFL fame and his enlistment post-911 to dupe young Americans into signing on to the Big Lie. In the film they show a signed affidavit from then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in which he says "We need to keep an eye on this guy (Tillman), he's going places." But Tillman had become deeply disillusioned with Bush's illegal wars and he was telling his friends and family this. Then he gets shipped off to Afghanistan after his tour in Iraq and next thing he gets blown to pieces by a 50-cal Humvee mounted machine gun, the only Army Ranger on that 10 Humvee convoy fired upon that day. If that does not smack of an assassination then I'd love someone to prove me wrong. The Bush Propaganda Machinery could not risk such a high-profile in-the-know guy like Tillman coming home from war to blow the whistle on Bush's crimes.
Has anyone posed this strong possibility to the Tillman clan?

  25. Flem

He would have come home and told everyone what exactly was going on over there. And unlike everyone else people would have listened. You know the criminals who started these "wars" could not have that. He was point blank murdered. Considering how many other people Bush and his criminal cohorts have murdered. He was expendable. No good deed ever goes unpunished.

  26. Sorry folks–being ex-Army myself–I have a really hard time–thinking this was a "hit" —Reasons–well you dont kill your fellow soldier on purpose; I have not served with one soldier who would kill his buddy for a $MILLION DOLLARS-let alone for Political reasons-and if it was a hit–someone would have broke by now-someone would have come forward and the truth would be there–I believe they were all hyped up and killed Pat by friendly fire.. In war time-all is not the same. Many have died this way–Way too many, but thats war. It happens—look around you at work-how many of your co-workers screw up-daily-well the US Military is no different actually probably even worse..Sorry-I just cant believe a team-kills one of its members for a POLITICIAN-I was 4yrs US Army 101st. Airborne…Im a big fan of PAT–RIP-brother–

  27. I am glad to know there are still people like Ahrnold who have difficulty believing that Pat Tillman's death resulted from a conspiracy to prevent him from telling the truth about the war in Afgahnistan. Fifty five years ago when I exited the US Army infantry after Harry Truman- Douglas MacArthur-Korean War, I too would have experienced difficulty believing such a horrible atrocity would be committed by us. After the lies of Lyndon Johnson-Westmoreland-Vietnam, Richard Nixon-Watergate, Ronald Reagan-Iran-Contra coverup, George Bush, Sr.-no new tax lie, Bill Clinton-Lewinski lies, George Bush, Jr- Iraq lies, -Jessica Lynch lies, -coverup lies of Pat Tillman's death circumstances, I of course do not know fact from fiction. Add the knowledge that the commander of special forces, MacChrystal lied and knowingly warned Bush in an e-mail and it appears to me that Petraeus has lied to Obama regarding our capabilities in Afgahnistan. Anything is possible. I can hardly wait to discover our future and to learn what is true.

    • Oh I truly believe the statement my grandparents always made–"how do you know a politican is lying"? his lips are moving.. I do find it alarming how the current generation actually "believes" the politician they get in office will do what they promise or change things for real–Bama did great with the healthcare and now is taken hits for the 8 yrs of Bush not doing his JOB… But yes–plenty of conspiracies and lies–by our great government–just dont believe–PAT was one of them–they felt embarrassed and tried a cover-up.. But believe that his fellow soldiers committed the crime–NEVER..

Look, I have a 20-year-old naive gung-ho son in the Army being deployed next month first to Iraq and then to Afghanistan. I am struggling within my own heart and soul to reconcile my pride in the son who was heading into serious legal problems if he didn't turn his life around sooner than later, with my contempt and suspicions for my government's objectives abroad. Though I sport "Go Army" bumper stickers on my vehicles in a show of solidarity for my son, after having seen "The Tillman Story" (which I have previously expressed my suspicions about on this website) I cannot shake the idea that my son is going off to risk his life for a whole lot of bullshit, pardon my gutter but honest choice of definitive language.
Yesterday was the 47th anniversary of the JFK assassination, an event I have studied for decades. Though Oswald was an assassin that day in Dallas, I have never believed he acted alone, even if he was the only shooter. Someone was behind him, someone orchestrated that coup d'etat. Whether it was a CIA hit or a Pentagon hit or a Mafia hit or an anti-Castro sympathizer hit or a USSR/Cuba hit, the facts and suspicions and conjectures can point to all of these entities, which is why it will always remain an unsolvable crime. But a conspiracy did occur. And so it seems that there is a strong possibility that Pat Tillman was murdered — not "killed" by friendly fire — and that is an assassination when carried out by a political intention.

    • As your son will tell you—An Army Ranger WILL NEVER KILL another ARMY RANGER—for the sake of politics or any other reason. Plenty have come back from iraq – Afghanistan and protested the WAR–now if it was "unkown fire" that killed PAT—i would be ALL for this consiracy thing–but knowing his fellow-soldiers did it (friendly fire)–I will never BELIEVE–being ex-Army–even the guys that didnt get along-would take a bullet for each other in battle—not take out one of their OWN–I didnt see the documentary-yet but will watch it. I am not a Bush "fan" I vote INDEP. I actually wished Bush was impeached when the WMD–were not found– funny how he gave out the 1st bail-out checks- was losing 750K jobs a month in his last 6 months and Bama takes the heat.. Anyway–folks the day when soldiers start taken out other soldiers because of POLITICAL PROPAGANDA—is the day we need to have a REVOLUTION…

  29. ShootReloadShoot

"War is the ultimate reality-based horror show."
    David Hackworth

Hack always took care of the most inportant piece of military property. His troops. Pat Tillman was a troop. If superiors can not/will not protect their most important resources, they should be removed or relieved. It happens every day to lesser known, but still the highest quality soldiers. Silence=Shame.

    • War equals DEATH-KILLING- cant protect every troop- soldiers know this and are willing to kill and die for their country but friendly fire- like this should have never happened–was it a "hit" i just dont believe that his fellow soldiers would do it.. That would be like shooting your best friend because your BOSS told you to do it.. These other Rangers admired Pat and looked up to him.. Just doesnt ADD up.. My 2 cents folks–I fear we will never know the real story-

    Comment:
Before this gets carried away, I would like to begin this by saying I was a huge Pat Tillman fan. What he accomplished with limited athletic ability was remarkable. Now for the hard part. I am a pragmatist. The bottom line is Pat Tillman made a very risky and unwise decision to place himself in harms way by joining the army.

–ALL do when joining the Military-they make sure you are aware of that–in PROCESSING–You make mention of Pat's atletic ability and say nothing about his academic excellence–he knew the risks–

Their is a very good reason why traditionallyy the armed services wouldnt allow celebrities in combat.

–if physically and mentally capable–you are not turned down for SERVICE–Many celebrities served–one BIG Ex-Army – ELVIS

Should anything happen to them, it would hurt the war effort. Lets face it, if the public sees its heroes dying, it makes them think it could happen to them, it hurts recruiting, etc.

–thats why the DRAFT was a huge success…

Tillman made a selfish, one-sided decesion.

–not true–serving your country is a personal decision–not a selfish one-

It wasnt for his country, his family, or anyone else except for himself.

—yes he felt the need to give his ALL–for his country–it does start with the person..

If he really wanted to do something to help he wouldnt have jeapordized his own life, which in the end hurt the war effort by his dying,

—they still have a waiting list-didnt hurt recruitment at all…During a recession–recruitment is always HIGH–

and would have stayed in the NFL and payed his high taxes to help pay for the war.

—If you listened to BUSH-Iraq was supposed to pay for itself-and he was against NATION BUILDING-so he said-to bad-he LIED–

Lets face it, with his tax bracket he could have helped the war effort in a way that no other enlisted person could have.

–the "guess" today will be $4 TRILLION-when we get done–dont think even his WHOLE PAY would be more than a DROP in the BUCKET..

Somebody should have talked some sense into Pat because in the end he accomplished exactly the opposite of which he wanted.

—No he did exactly what he set out to do–he gave HIS ALL for his COUNTRY–

Rest in peace, I'm still a fan.

—fan of WHAT? THE Almighty $$$ Sign?? He was a football player–some people see them as heroes–I dont–he is a hero-just like the Dad out there with 5 kids at home-fighting-because thats his JOB–Him giving up FOOTBALL means nothing to me–him serving his country is what makes me see him as a BROTHER…
