Trailer for 'The Last Station' Pulls In for a Viewing
Will Plummer and Mirren enjoy Oscar nominations?

The film that once was set to star Anthony Hopkins and Meryl Streep now stars Christopher Plummer and Helen Mirren and is supposedly a serious Oscar contender. That film is The Last Station and it's set to hit theaters in New York and L.A. on December 4.
Michael Hoffman wrote and directed the film, an adaptation of Jay Parini's novel of the same name, which is set in the last tumultuous years of Leo Tolstoy's (Plummer) life, the historical biopic centers on the battle for his soul waged by his wife (Mirren) and his leading disciple, Vladimir Cherkov (Paul Giamatti). Torn between his professed codtrine of poverty and chastity and the reality of his enormous wealth, his thirteen children, and a life of hedonism, Tolstoy makes a dramatic flight from his home. Too ill to continue beyond the tiny rail station at Astapovo, he believes that he is dying alone, while over one hundred newspapermen camp outside awaiting hourly reports on his condition. James McAvoy and Kerry Condon also star.

It looks pretty good, mostly for the performances. This film has been so quiet however, I don't know what kind of influence it will have on the Awards game.
Plummer is so ridiculously overdue for a nod that it's not even funny. This isn't even one of those shocking things where neither Hal Holbrook or Ruby Dee had never been nominated before 2007. This dude has been a leading man since the 60s. I know he missed out on the Sound of Music ferry because he badmouthed the film, but the snub for The Insider was a joke.
I don't mind if it's not a great performance and he gets a nod, frankly. The man deserves it. It's always a shame when someone goes without for their entire career, like Dana Andrews, Edward Robinson, and Joseph Cotten. Eli Wallach is someone else in that category. Disgraceful. I mean, the Oscars aren't genuinely an indicator of quality. Not often, anyway. So it can't hurt.
I'd also like to see McAvoy get a mea culpa for the Atonement snub.
Plummer deserved a nomination (and win) for "The Insider" back in 1999…I don't see this making an awards run though. The trailer's pretty boring and it will need very strong reviews to generate any sort of buzz.
The performances look good, and I love Helen Mirren and James McAvoy (and, to a lesser extent, Christopher Plummer). But the trailer suggests the plot is very muddled and rather high concept–high concept being that it's a movie about Leo Tolstoy. Academia's going to be jerking off over it, whether or not it's actually any good, just because it's about Leo Tolstoy and it's all but guaranteed not to break into wide release.
