Trailer for 'The Debt' Starring Worthington and Mirren
Are we looking at an Oscar contender?
Yahoo has just debuted the trailer for The Debt directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) and starring Sam Worthington, Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Ciaran Hinds and Tom Wilkinson. The film is based on Assaf Bernstein's 2007 Israeli film of the same name. Matthew Vaughn and fellow Kick-Ass co-writers Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan penned the screenplay.
The story centers on Rachel Singer (Mirren), a former Mossad agent who endeavored to capture and bring to trial a notorious Nazi war criminal – the Surgeon of Birkenau – in a secret Israeli mission that ended with his death on the streets of East Berlin. Now, 30 years later, a man claiming to be the doctor has surfaced, and Rachel must go back to Eastern Europe to uncover the truth. Overwhelmed by haunting memories of her younger self and her two fellow agents, the still-celebrated heroine must relive the trauma of those events and confront the debt she has incurred.
Miramax is set to release the film on December 29 and it's one of the films included in my "The Contenders" as a potential Oscar contender. Give the trailer a watch directly below and make known your thoughts in the comments below.
One thing to note is Jessica Chastain is expected to make a splash on the scene in Terrence Malick's Tree of Life, but should that film continue to be delayed this may serve as her coming out party as she plays the younger version of Mirren's Rachel Singer.

At the very least it looks like a solid thriller. I'm guessing the doctor who they're pursuing is inspired by Josef Mengele.
Good cast, but the trailer makes the movie look boring. If it gets good reviews I'll probably see it.
Looks like a diverting thriller, and nothing more. John Madden is a hack director who only made 1 really impressive film, and that was Mrs. Brown.
I like it, but I really don't buy Ciaran Hinds as an older Sam Worthington. At all. Hmm.
It looks pretty bland. Then again, that didn't stop The Reader from picking up a bunch of Oscar nominations.
This trailer felt lifeless.
I don't think I see it as an Oscar contender, but as said above it looks like a decent thriller.
Yeah, the trailer didn't do much for me.
Looks okay, nothing that truly yells oscar contender though.
P.S Why does Sam Worthington never bother to change that f*cking accent? It was not a problem in Avatar, Clash of the Titans was pushing it but he could get away with it but when your playing an Israeli solider at least try to do a different voice.
I actually thought it was a pretty solid trailer. I wasn't expecting much considering that I thought that the original was very average, but this looks excellent. Also looking forward to seeing Sam Worthington in a movie that actually requires acting to see if he cuts it.
Was at the film premier last night. Completely gripping, compelling and stunning lead performances and incredibly crafted. I don't usually blog but if youre on the fence about seeing this film don't be.
