As I am working on a new editorial piece for you all to chew on, Yahoo has debuted the first trailer for DreamWorks' next animated feature How To Train Your Dragon featuring a voice cast made up of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill and Craig Ferguson and directed by Lilo and Stitch helmers Christopher Sanders and Dean DeBlois.

The film is due in theaters on March 26, 2010 and centers on a Viking teenager named Hiccup (Baruchel) who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. His smarts and offbeat sense of humor don't sit too well with his tribe or its chief… who just happens to be Hiccup's father. However, when Hiccup is included in Dragon Training with the other Viking teens, he sees his chance to prove he has what it takes to be a fighter. But when he encounters (and ultimately befriends) an injured dragon, his world is flipped upside down, and what started out as Hiccup's one shot to prove himself turns into an opportunity to set a new course for the future of the entire tribe.

We have some early concept art from the film in our gallery along with the first two posters from the film, click here to check those out.

    doesnt look to hot does it

    I couldn't get over the similarities to Kung Fu Panda with the first half of the trailer. Boy is working for his 'father', wants to be something unlikely, father tells him he can't. Then it changes, but…yeah.

    Actually, that looks a lot more promising than the generic-sounding write-up suggested. "Lilo and Stitch" had a lot of offbeat charm, and I can see some of that vibe here with the dragon's animation. It's also nice to see a Dreamwork's animated trailer that's not relying on pop-culture reference jokes, but instead some character work.

    Yeah, there's nothing terribly original on display there, but I'm not going to write this one off yet.

    This looks goddamn awful. the bit from 1:17 to 1:50 goes on forever. The trailer is awfully constructed. It shows the plot but it certainly isn't funny or clever. This certainly won't do Shrek or Kung Fu Panda numbers and maybe not even Monsters Vs Aliens numbers either. Smells like another dreamworks flop to me.

    They sure are continuing to exploit 3D. It would be interesting to see the 3D releases in 2009 compared to 08, cause it looks like its going to skyrocket in 2010.

    @Nate:

    I agree completely- it even has the conversation about dreams vs. reality taking place behind the counter of a store…just like in the first 10 minutes of "Kung Fu Panda".

    Um…this doesn't look so hot. I'm glad that Dreamworks is laying off the pop culture references for once, but I don't like Baruchel's voice here. He should just speak in his normal tone instead of trying to add this nasally sounding geek inflection to the character.
    Also, this looks more like an action film than a comedy & more often than not animated action films drop the ball.

    But hey, at least it's not animated "Eragon"…right?

    I had a brief glimmer of hope when I saw that the geniuses behind "Lilo & Stitch" were involved, but that glimmer was snuffed when I watched the trailer.

    I'm confused as to why they're even calling this "How to Train Your Dragon," because that is NOT the story they're telling. The character names are the same (except for the invented and unnecessary Astrid), but EVERYTHING ELSE is different.

    DreamWorks ruins another one.

    @ButMadNNW:

    I feel the same sense of disappointment. Based on the trailer, I don't understand why they even kept the title! At least in terms of the book it makes sense – that is the key to initiation into the Tribe of the Hairy Hooligans after all – burglaring a baby dragon from the dragon nursery and then training it to hunt & fish for the young warriors! The Hairy Hooligans are not dragon fighters.

    And that is NOT Toothless! Toothless is an emerald green, small for his kind, Common or Garden dragon (and forget trying to lift Hiccup) – not a large gray/black dragon that Hiccup can ride on! Not to mention that fact that there is reason behind his name – he has no teeth!

    I understand that there are bound to be some differences when adapting a book into a movie with the change in mediums, but this appears to be a completely different story, where the only thing in common is (most of) the names.

    I was very excited when I first saw that this movie was coming. Now, I doubt I'll see the movie. Way to go Dreamworks, and Hollywood in general. What a way to ruin yet another perfectly good kids book/series!
