Adding to the promotion I discussed last week as Disney hopes to win the Best Picture Oscar for Toy Story 3, Awards Daily gives us this latest For Your Consideration advertisement for the movie.

Campaign continues…and it still won't win best picture.
I don't get how this image relates to the "Return of the king". Is it just because it's a 3rd film?
Yeah, it's a sequel winning Best Picture comparison and how Return of the King was rewarded Best Picture as a congrats for the whole trilogy.
Oooooooh ok i get it thanks
How was Return of the King awarded for the whole trilogy? Was that officially said or something? I'm pretty sure that a lot of critics considered it the best of the three films so why is it farfetched to think it won on its own?
I'm guessin it's a riff on the scene when Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas leads the Army of the Undead to battle at the fields of Pelenor.
Its beacuse in LOTR3 There were really only three main characters fight orcs (or wat ever there called) Aragon Legolas and Gimli. The Monkeys are orcs running after them, Woodys Aragon (Tall) Buzz – Gimli (small) and Jessie – Legolas because Orlando Bloom is sorta a pussie :D.
Poor old colin, you'll be choking on a huge bowl of HUMBLE PIE next feb.
No I won't. And I think Return of the King is one of thw worst best pciture winners of recent memory.
Quite a hefty remark. What about the film makes you say that? You are certainly in the minority.
Like what has been mentioned above, they weren't awarding the film they awarded the trilogy. And it is a shame because they certainly rewarded the wrong film.
I've seen the film several times I can hardly remember anything truly rewarding about the film in comparison to it's two predecessors. Like what is often considered to be a "great" film by many, It was overly long, redundant, full of awkward bumbling moments of self-indulgent and outright lazy pausing for no reason, a reashed vibe of a trilogy that promised more than what was offered, and ultimatley, there was no real substance and emotional component to the film. At least not the same kinds of elements that I felt with the first two features. It was easilly the weakest in the series and the weakest among the best picture contenders that year.
Unfortunatley there will be a similar result with Nolan's third Batman feature in 2012.
This disgusts me because such an average film is comparing itself with Return of the King.
The movie's not good enough. It may be great, but I actually think "Dragon" won this time around.
I agree. I went to see both, and while I enjoyed Toy Story 3, it just didn't have the same punch as How to Train Your Dragon. I walked out of the theater after HTTYD and was like, elated. But after TS3, I just walked out and forgot about it.
I like how they think they got the Animated Feature oscar in the bag even though HttyD was a better movie.
I actually hope they lose this year since they've been acting really cocky.
I can't quite understand the unbridled love TS3 got. I keep thinking it has to be rooted in the childhood nostalgia from seeing the first one when you were a kid. Yes, I liked it, but I didn't think it was Best Picture superlative. It was good, but it was not "You CANNOT miss this one" good.
The only film I unabashedly recommended this year—actively encouraged people to go see, in 3D, in the theater—was How To Train Your Dragon. I'd much rather see it get a Best Picture nod than this one.
HTTYD is only good when you compare it to other Dreamworks Animation movies – compared to Shrek 4 and Monsters vs. Aliens it's a must see.
But compared to Toy Story 3, Up, and Wall-E it's easily forgettable.
Besides, HTTYD is simply Cloudy with a Chance of Black Stallion… nothing original there.
Boo-yah
I agree completely.
So in what way is Toy Story original or memorable? I watched it once, and had no desire to watch it ever again.
Yes! Thank you. HTTYD is so overrated. It's actually shocking that no one has mentioned the mediocre and cluttered first half of it.
The supposedly "unbridled love" that Toy Story 3 gets is mostly from its Young Adult fan base. There seems to be an automatic connection between the viewer and Andy, especially for those viewers in their late teens and early 20s (I do admit that I am aware that less than 1% of the academy actually falls under that age bracket.) It's a freaking phenomenon. I speak for my generation in general. I live in freaking South East Asia, miles away from the supposed hub of pop culture and film that is the US, and the repercussions of films like Toy Story 3 and even Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows still resonate ever so powerfully (though I do admit that the former was a much better film as a whole.)
From a critical standpoint, Toy Story 3 and How To Train Your Dragon are brilliant in their respective ways. However I see that the sheer epic scale of the third movie of an undoubtedly beloved franchise (guess which) can get more leverage. Personally, I am a huge fan of Toy Story 3 and I've been rooting for it since day one but I also really liked HTTYD. The only issue with HTTYD is that it never really picked up steam for Best Picture in the first place. I also guess that the Geezers at the Academy also tend to lean towards more sentimental and epic choices rather than good understated ones (Yes there are exceptions to that "rule" but don't Troll me on this.) My reasoning also stands on the fact that as long as there are people who shoot something down (i.e. Glee @ the Emmys or Toy Story 3 @ the Oscars) there'll be extremely staunch supporters by the target's side. So yeah.
How is "How to Train your Dragon" better then Toy story 3? I mean, I just don't get why all of you people consider it to be a better film. I don't want to sound like some cocky film snob or anything like that, but I'm just curious, why do all of you consider it to be a better film ? just curious…
HTTYD was good, but I'm not over the moon about it like others are.
Having now seen How to Train Your Dragon, I can say I definitely think Toy Story is vastly superior. Dragon was okay I thought, certainly better than the endless pop culture riffs in the Shrek films. I haven't seen Monsters vs. Aliens or Kung Fu Panda so I can't make a comparison there. Frankly I thought the best thing about Dragon was the score. I thought it had a great, epic action film type score, one of the best I've heard all year, with only Inception and Harry Potter maybe being superior.
With all that said, I do think Disney is getting a bit cocky here, and I'm starting to think more and more that it may backfire on them and Dragon could steal the Animated Film Oscar. I don't think they'll lose their Best Pic nomination though.
Shrek was infinitely better than How to Train Your Dragon. Shrek moved quickly, had many clever jokes, and a talented voice cast. The best Dreamworks film? Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
Best Picture? Well, don't get me wrong Toy Story 3 definitely makes it into my Top 10 Films of 2010; however, actually WINNING the Oscar for Best Picture…its just not gonna happen. Not when your competition is:
Black Swan
True Grit
The Social Network
Inception
127 Hours
The King's Speech
…and that's just to name a few. Toy Story 3 will have to stick to winning Best Animated Feature and possibly Best Sound Editing. Respectable, but its not gonna win the big one.
Thems the facts
I'm predicting that The King's Speech will actually be this year's Gangs of New York. Get a lot of noms, then get shut out on the night.
Ahh…no. I think the Academy has learned from that tragedy. It will probably win Best Actor, possibly screenplay and maybe some technical awards.
Tragedy? I thought that was a wise decision. The fact that Gangs of New York was even nominated in the first place was the tragedy, in the sense that many blame Gangs for snubbing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
I don't mind the Disney TS3 Best Pic campaign. Other studios would do the same if they had a film of such pedigree. I'm guessing it'll be the one-perhaps only-movie among the 10 BP nominees that will have both critical and mainstream adoration. Oh, and throw in a billion dollars worldwide to boot. I'm not saying it'll win, because I don't think it will. While AMPAS has finally found it in them to vote a fantasy film for the top prize, I don't think it's in them yet to do the same for an Animated film.
Call them cocky and what not for assuming that they got the Animated Oscar in the bag, but lets face it..it IS in the bag. Toy Story 3 is not leaving the Kodak theater without an outright Oscar win. While it'll be nominated for Best Picture, its win will be for the Animated Oscar.
Unfortunately, Toy Story 3 won't get much support from the Actors branch for the big prize. It'll still be nominated for best picture. Oh, and there's no way it loses in the Animated category. Toy Story 3, or should I say the Toy Story trilogy, will not walk away empty handed.
It's gonna lose out on Best picture, but there's no chance in hell the film saga that started the CG animation boom loses the Animation category to boot. Like what an earlier poster already stated, there's no way it'll leave Oscar night with nothing.
So basically it'll win because it was part of a franchise that was pretty revolutionary, but not because of the (low) quality of the film itself?
Feels bad man.
No, it'll win because besides being part of a brilliant saga, it IS the best animated film of the year. It's not its fault it was part of a revolutionary franchise. While Return of the King was great, If I had my choice, Fellowship of the Ring would've been the film that won BP. Nonetheless, I don't begrudge it winning and it does not have to apologize for its pedigree. Same with Toy Story 3.
Low quality? What the hell are you talking about?????
Low quality? The fuck are you on about?
Bias still too strong. TS3 will probably come quite close, but it'll have to settle for a BP nod and the Animated oscar.
Toy Story 3 had almost the exact same story as Toy Story 2. Toys get lost, find new toys, leader of new group turns bad, toys get back home. They even reused the Spanish Buzz gag.
I really don't see why everyone is saying that this is the best animated movie ever. Must be all those nostalgiagoggles.
Of course it's the same movie as the other 2, it's the same plot as many/most other children's movies. Toy Story 3 even directly confronts that. When the toy's get taken away from Andy's house Woody looks almost directly into the camera and says, "Oh great! It's going to take us forever to get back!"
I think Pixar enjoys breaking new ground with original stories like Ratatouille and Up, and going back to the classic plots and saying "Hey, we can rock this too."
It could also be said that it has been since The Return of the King since a film has won best picture with Computer Graphics (a large amount). And Toy Story 3 could be the next.
i really hope that toy story 3 win best picture because it is the best movie of this year i know that inception, tha social network and black swan are amazing but if we have to choose i really think that it is time that an animated movie win the oscar for best picture and what better movie than "toy story 3".
I'm sorry, but How to Train Your Dragon was better than Toy Story 3? That is just RIDICULOUS. How to Train Your Dragon was overshadowed by an unfocused, uneven, and cluttered first half. The second half was solid, but nothing special. It is the Avatar of animated films. Toy Story 3 was heartwarming, attention-grabbing, honest, and exuberant. The story, while reused, was still intriguing and coherent. How to Train Your Dragon is no Coraline, Wallace & Gromit, or even Happy Feet in terms of non-Pixar animated films.
How to Train Your Dragon is certainly a good film. In a normal year, it would win this category. This, however, is not a normal year. Toy Story 3, besides being the final installment of one of cinema's greatest trilogies, is a clever, fast-paced, deeply poignant masterpiece. While my personal favorite film of the year (and possibly the 2000s) is The Social Network, I would be quite content to see the toys take the big prize.
And let's face it — Best Animated Feature is a mortal lock at this point. Dragon ran a nice race and deserves recognition in its own right, but it simply cannot compete with a film that many are hailing as Pixar's finest.
Four times has the Oscar not gone to Pixar. Two of them (2002 & 2005) were years where Pixar didn't even release a movie.
The other two were the years when Cars lost to Happy Feet and when Monsters Inc. lost to Shrek.
I think its safe to say that Monsters Inc. was WAY better than Shrek and that was a ridiculous fluke.
Every other Pixar movie has won the Oscar and this isn't the year that is going to change.
Toy Story 3 will win.
Cars 2 will win.
Monsters Inc. 2 will win.
When Pixar begins releasing more than one movie a year, the Oscar should be renamed "Pixar Movie of the year".
