'Toy Story 3' Holds Off 'Grown Ups' and 'Knight and Day' at the Friday Box-Office
'Jonah Hex' risks falling out of the top ten
I'd say the only surprise from Friday's box-office estimates would be that the bottom five films all made less than $1 million. Even The A-Team coming in at #5 only managed $1.9 million, which makes for an extraordinarily top heavy Friday. To my recollection I don't think I've ever reported on a Friday box-office with numbers this small at the bottom. Of course, it's all relative to how much money's being made at the top, but this is summer movie season… Aren't we supposed to be talking about broken records and stand out hits? Let's take a look at it.
As expected, Toy Story 3 will take the weekend. After an estimated $18 million on Friday you can look for this one to pull in something like $60-65 million for the weekend. Laremy predicted $71.7 for the hit animation, but something miraculous would have to happen for it to hit that mark.
Grown Ups is going to win the battle of the newcomers as it earned an estimated $14 million on Friday and has a shot at a $45 million opening, which is no surprise to anyone that's taken a look at the success Adam Sandler movies have enjoyed. I discussed it in a recent article looking forward to June's releases and wrote:
On June 25 Columbia will release the Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Rob Schneider and David Spade ensemble comedy Grown Ups, which doesn't seem to be exciting any of the people I've talked to, but considering it is a Sandler vehicle I have to assume we can chalk it up to a $100 million domestic return at minimum as pretty much everything Sandler does comedically turns to box-office gold. I mean, if You Don't Mess with the Zohan, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Click and even The Longest Yard can earn over $100 million what reason would we have to believe this one won't as well, no matter the quality?
You tell me, will Grown Ups hold on long enough to make it another $100 million earner for Sandler?
The Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz feature, Knight and Day, took in an estimated $6.3 million, which means it will be looking at anywhere from $20-23 million for the weekend. Releasing on Wednesday, Knight and Day earned $7.2 million in its first two days in theaters and will be working hard if it wants to crack the $30 million mark. However, it has managed to hold rather well after a lackluster $3.8 million opening. Then again, it's not as if it had a very hard target to hit.
Finally, in the opening I referred to the dismal returns for movies #5-10 on Friday, and if you look at the bottom of that list you will find what will likely be considered the all-out bomb of the summer. After only one week, Jonah Hex, a reported $50-65 million budgeted film from Warner Bros., risks falling out of the top ten. I already discussed this result at length earlier this week, but if you have anything more to say about the film's $500k return on Friday have at it in the comments.
I've included the rest of the Friday estimates directly below. Stay tuned for Laremy's box-office wrap-up on Sunday.
- Toy Story 3 – $18 million
- Grown Ups – $14 million
- Knight and Day – $6.3 million
- The Karate Kid – $4.8 million

- Prince of Persia – $901,000
- Shrek Forever After – $850,000
- Killers – $659,000
- Jonah Hex – $500,000

I get a feeling Jonah Hex won't be in theaters much longer.
Grown Ups definitely isn't making $45M. $40M is the roof.
Unless it falls hard subsequently it still probably has a good shot at $100 million plus though.
Myself, really I can't stand Sandler as a performer and will never ever pay to see any of his films but in spite of that it would be pointless to deny he does have a broadly consistent audience base that gives him repeated success in this genre.
Knight and Day might actually be able to save some face but it's still unlikely to be what was hoped for overall – in the face of Eclipse next weekend it may fall hard then anyway.
You've got that right. When I saw New Moon in the theater, I was amazed to see that, to an extent, it's a date movie. And Eclipse is offering more action which may make it an acceptable date movie for even more guys. This could make Knight And Day the third choice for couples. Has anyone figured out the title of Knight And Day yet?
It's not what I expected for Toy Story 3 number.
I expect bigger result, but it's still great. As usual, PIXAR will have great legs at box office.
Let's hope Tom Cruise latest work won't be disaster. It's very common movie but it is indeed enjoyable film…
As for Grown Up, as usual it won't be played here in Indonesia, the only Adam Sandler movie that was played here before was Click.
Regards from Indonesia
I thought the same as you with toy story 3, I was guessing like 67m to 73 m , but I am not worriedm it performs better on weekdays,,very strong legs
it holds the 5th place in all time record in first week,,awesome,
I'm interested to see Toy Story's numbers tomorrow. Cause if it plays like it played last weekend, it'll end up closer to $50 million. Of course the nostalgic teen audience might have contributed to the frontloaded Friday last weekend, in which case maybe it will perform more like a family film and end up with $60-65 million. That's a very lackluster start for Tom Cruise; is it starting to look like people are just tired of him? And even in this summer of low box office numbers, people will still turn out for the latest dreck from Adam Sandler. Oh well, even if Toy Story has the lower grossing of the scenarios above it should still clear $350 million.
Well, for worse, Sandler has another cookie cutter comedy hit. It appears Laremy low balled it based on the reviews, but the crowd I saw it with enjoyed it a lot, for whatever reason. It doesn't seem like it will experience a Bruno type drop.
Looks like my knight and day prediction might come true. Toy story 3 made around 55 million this past week, so statistically it should earn about 60 million or higher.
I bet this is Toy Story's last week at #1 unfortunatly. But that doesn't mean last week in top 5. It will come in either 2nd or 3rd next week cuz of TLA and Eclipse. Unless there is a suprise and flops. But i doubt it. Toy Story's last week in the Top 5 is when Inception comes out.
I along with my 16 year old grandson went and saw,"Grown Ups" this weekend. I can honestly say I was NOT dissapointed. This as well as ,y grandson Zack"s opinion is one of the funniest movies we"ve seen in a long time. It was not stop laughing from the both of us as well as the movie goers around us. I am pround to watch a, Adam Sandler movie with any and all my 11 grandchildren any and every moment I can.
Mr Sandler thank you sincerly, for all the laughter that you allow my family and I get the chance to share. With all the sadnet that is around us in this world today, you are a very funny breath of fresh air.

I predicted $28 million. Perhaps I should have surmised that someone in the marketplace has to take the space formerly occupied by Dumb And Dumber or The Three Stooges. And I don't mean that pejoratively. Do you think there are any five syllable words in Grownups?
Never underestimate an actor who has realised long ago that pumping out crap to the lowest common denominator can make you very rich at the box office.
Am I the only one to take a great amount of pleasure in seeing Tom Cruise get a huge fail stamp for his summer "blockbuster"? No Tom, you are NOT the guy and haven't been since your laughable portrayal of that Last Samurai.
No, I would imagine you probably aren't.
Rybanes. Get over yourself. You only wish you looked like Tom Cruise. I know how tough it is for you, but there is only one Tom Cruise. HE IS THE GREATEST. He gives 110% to every role he plays. He does all his own stunts. You try that Rybanes!! YEAH RIGHT! What is it that you dislike about Tom? He is a great actor, a great father, a great role model, and did I mention HE IS HOT!!! I know you wish you could be Tom, but not likely!! EAT YOUR HEART OUT BUDDY!!!!
I don't really understand why everyone is being like "TS3 should do more money" It made A LOT of money during the week. This movie is doing very well and will surely surpass 400 mil. GO TOY STORY!
Tom Cruise is awesome. He gives 110% to every movie he makes. He is getting a bad rap because he jumped on Oprah's couch!!! Get over it people!! Who did that hurt? Tom Cruise is the best role model. He lives clean. He is a great Dad. He is substance free unlike a lot of actors. He is a great actor. He does all his own stunts and he always has time for his fans. KNIGHT AND DAY RULES AND SO DOES TOM CRUISE!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE. DO I SENSE A LITTLE JEALOUSY HERE?!!!!!!!!!!
It's official – Knight and Day fizzled at the box office. Tom Cruise's star has dimmed and I would not be surprised if they canceled Mission Impossible 4. He just doesn't have the drawing power anymore. Good night, Tom. :)))))
