TIFF 2014: Complete 2014 Toronto Film Festival Lineup Announced

An excellent list is just getting started

2014 Toronto Film Festival LineupThis morning the first wave of the 2014 Toronto Film Festival lineup was announced and so far it's an impressive list of films including films from Noah Baumbach, Mike Leigh, David Gordon Green, Jason Reitman, Bennett Miller, David Cronenberg, Antoine Fuqua, Edward Zwick, Mikael Roskam, David Dobkin and many others.

Probably the films announced so far that I'm most excited about begin with Roskam's The Drop, Baumbach's While We're Young starring Naomi Watts and Amanda Seyfried, The Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch and The Theory of Everything starring Eddie Redmayne.

Then you get into Edward Zwick's Pawn Sacrifice (a nice surprise), Dobkin's The Judge with Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, Gordon Green's Manglehorn starring Al Pacino, Liv Ullman's Miss Julie starring Jessica Chastain

I'm also very excited to see Cannes stand outs Mr. Turner, Foxcatcher, Damian Szifron Wild Tales and David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars. Not to forget Whiplash, which made an impression at both Sundance and Cannes.

The addition of Nightcrawler starring Jake Gyllenhaal was expected and it's no surprise to see Jean-Marc Vallee's Wild or John Stewart's Rosewater. Also as a part of the Gala Presentation is Antoine Fuqua's The Equalizer starring Denzel Washington and Chloe Moretz as well as Shawn Levy's This is Where I Leave You.

Finally, Jason Reitman's Men, Women and Children has made the list along with Oren Moverman's Time Out of Mind.

No word yet on Xavier Dolan's Mommy, J.C. Chandor's A Most Violent Year, Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert or Anton Corbijn's Life as of yet, but there is more to come...

Aside from the docs, I'm really looking forward to Nightcrawler and Whiplash. There are a ton that i've never even heard of, makes it even more exciting.

    • http://www.silverscreenriot.com SmartFilm

Whiplash was great, Nightcrawler looks to be as well.

      • http://www.ohbrotherwhereartthougifts.com andyluvsfilms

I've watched that 'rushing or dragging' clip so many times on YouTube, the film looks amazeballs!!

        • http://www.silverscreenriot.com SmartFilm

JK Simmons is a beast in it. Would love to see him get a best supporting nod.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Adu/ Adu

Not a bad line-up at all; plenty of titles I'm curious about. However, I just can't muster the same excitement for TIFF this year as for the NY Film Festival...Inherent Vice, Gone Girl, and Birdman....hard to eclipse those for me.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Fox/ Fox

No word on A Most Violent Year yet. Sadly I think this means it will probably get the Foxcatcher treatment and be pushed to Cannes next year. That would be a lot smarter than throwing it wide late in the year. Unless of course it's the mystery opening film.

Speaking of which, my guess is Birdman. I assume there's a behind-the-scenes fight for it between TIFF and Telluride, and I assume TIFF will win

  • http://www.cinemaconfessions.com/ Gautam Anand

Innaritu and Fox both love Telluride. I don't see Birdman going to TIFF.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/TheLastEquivocationofBrist/ Michael

While We're Young just shot to the top of my Most Anticipated list, considering Frances Ha is one of my favorite movies ever :)

  • http://filmemignon.blogspot.com/ Corbin

Good lineup so far, and certainly one I wouldn't mind going to, but at the same time, New York has Gone Girl, Inherent Vice, and Birdman, Venice has Birdman and the European feel, and Telluride will have a whole bunch of worthwhile stuff. If I was going to a festival this year, it would be a tough decision.

  • Sam

Jesus christ, what happened to Serena? "A Second Chance" is finished but apparently "Serena" is not... .

Really excited about "Rosewater", "While We're Young", "Wild", "99 Homes","Foxcatcher","Miss Julie" and "Mr. Turner". I hope we hear from "Knight of Cups" soon. I really hope it's on Venice's and VIFF's lineup

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Hudsucker/ Hudsucker

Serena has been finished for a while. It must not be very good if they're so timid to show it anywhere.

      • Sam

Yeah I knew it was finished but they must show it already or announce a release date or something ...

      • Carlos.

I read recently at The Playlist that the movie is supposed to be okay, but that Bier took way too long with the post-production process. I know it sounds like bullshit, but even if this was bad, B-Cooper and J-Lawrence are box office gold on their own right now... why would you hold it for so long?

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Hudsucker/ Hudsucker

I'm probably most looking forward to A Little Chaos. I'm curious about what Rickman will do. Also, Brad you're boy Mike Binder (Reign Over Me) is their. Are you excited for that?

  • http://imqwerty.wordpress.com/ Jordan B.

Given how much I loved Frances Ha, While We're Young is an exciting announcement. Also looking forward to Foxcatcher, Whiplash, Wild, Nightcrawler, and The Equalizer, among others.

  • http://www.silverscreenriot.com SmartFilm

Very solid lineup. The Galas section is stacked, though there are some notable omissions that I would have liked to seeing populating that category. Hoping they still have some surprises up their sleeve and a killer midnight section.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Travis/ Travis

Nice little line up. Nothing too flashy. I'd expect Birdman and maybe A Most Violent Year to pop up there as well, and probably Queen of the Desert and Mommy. Based on this list, it seems the most likely views would be:
    Foxcatcher
    Mr. Turner
    Whiplash
    Wild
    Maps to the Stars
    The Riot Club
    The Drop
    The Imitation Game
    Manglehorn
    Men, Women and Children
    Rosewater
    Still Alice
    Theory of Everything
With Coming Home, Cake, The Judge, and This Is Where I Leave You as other possibilities
And if you want to see something that looks trite and clichéd, well, The Good Lie is available

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/JNFilms/ JN Films

Wow this is an amazing list.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Kessler/ Kessler

Pretty good lineup. Really excited for Foxcatcher, Whiplash, Pawn Sacrifice, and Men, Women, and Children.
