TOP TEN: Best Movies Mid-Way Through 2007
Not a lot to love, but I managed to find ten
| Reign Over Me |
It was a toss-up for me between Once and Reign Over Me for the top spot, and I feel I am going to have the same dilemma come the end of the year as these two movies are going to be hard to top.
While the summer frame is all about spectacle these are two films that proved good movies can still be made, they just won't make you that much money. Taking a closer look at my top ten for the first half of 2007 you will see that the ten films I most enjoyed grossed $538,654,569 collectively. Compare this to the $559,011,944 made by Spider-Man 3 and Transformers. What this tells studios is that it doesn't pay to make good movies, it pays to make dumb movies, and I had 300 and Die Hard 4 on this list! Without them you are looking at only $224 million… Broken English only made $356,705 !
Fortunately filmmakers don't run studios and we can get films like Reign Over Me and get two fantastic performances out of Don Cheadle and Adam Sandler. Honestly, this is the best you are going to ever see Sandler and Cheadle once again proves he is one of the best actors out there. There are moments in this film where Cheadle says all he needs to say with a facial expression, a talent not many actors possess. The interaction between him and Jada Pinkett Smith is priceless.
I truly believe if they had avoided the whole 9/11 tragedy with this film and made the central accident of the story anything else Reign Over Me would have grossed far more than the $19,661,987 it did. Hopefully more people will catch it on DVD because you will all enjoy it.
