TOP TEN: Best DVDs of 2007
And you thought Transformers would be on this list...
| Stranger Than Paradise (Criterion Collection) |
One of my all-time favorite movies, Stranger Than Paradise announced Jim Jarmusch's arrival and changed independent cinema for ever gets the phenomenal Criterion treatment it deserves. This deadpan masterpiece, out of print for quite some time, has never looked or sounded better, excising the film damage that distracted from the subtleties of Jarmusch's direction and the lead performances by John Lurie, Eszter Balint, and Richard Edson. The best supplement to be found on this DVD is without a doubt the inclusion of Jarmusch's debut film, Permanent Vacation, essentially making it the best two-pack ever. I'm sure a lot of people find Stranger Than Paradise to be incredibly boring, but that's okay. This a movie just as easy to hate as it is to love, and I understand the theatrical quality take from Jarmusch's "one shot per scene" policy (which you can check out below) can irk some people, and not all will appreciate the lethargy of out protagonists, which many will perceive as coldness. Stranger Than Paradise is easy to love if you try, and if you look close enough, you'll find a very deep, character-driven story. This perfectly captures what it's like to be young and bored, and makes it entertaining. In this regard, Jim Jarmusch is a miracle worker.
