Tom Cruise in 'Star Trek XI'?

Word from an IGN scooper is that Tom Cruise is being wooed by director J.J. Abrams to play the role of Captain Christopher Pike in the upcoming Star Trek XI. Pike was Captain Kirk's predecessor in the original "Star Trek" series and was actually supposed to be the lead of the show. However, NBC wasn't impressed with the pilot episode that featured Jeffrey Hunter in the role of Pike and when a new pilot was shot Hunter was not available and William Shatner filled in as Captain Kirk. The rest is history.
In an effort not to lose the footage that was shot, the Hunter starring pilot episode footage was used later in season one in a two-part episode called "The Menagerie". If you are looking to see that original pilot episode the season three DVD set has some of the original black and white footage and a fully restored color version.
As for this casting I think Cruise's style of acting would actually fit in as Pike and since it would most likely be a cameo sending the Enterprise off on their maiden voyage I wouldn't expect it to be too distracting to have such a major star in a secondary role. Considering the bad blood between Paramount and Cruise IGN points out the obvious that this would be a favor to Abrams and not the studio led by Sumner Redstone.
