'Titans' Opens to $4.2 Million in Midnight Showings
Miley and the Titans do battle, but there be Dragons near
Can a film really be expected to come out on top at the box-office with midnight screenings alone as it battles films targetting a younger demo that had played all day and during Spring Break no less? That appears to be Carl DiOrio's angle at The Hollywood Reporter as he brings word Clash of the Titans earned $4.2 million from Thursday night and midnight performances in about 3,000 domestic theaters. The film tied for second for the day with The Last Song compared to $5 million for How to Train Your Dragon. DiOrio calls it a "solid but unspectacular start" as most of the midnight screenings were in 2D, though over the weekend at least half of the film's showings will be in 3D in over 3,700 theaters.
So why is $4.2 million unspectacular? Avatar made $3.537 million in approximately 2,000 theaters over the course of its midnight run with 85% of those showings in 3D and Box-Office Mojo's Brandon Gray called that a strong start. I'd say Titans is doing just fine, but will it be able to hit Laremy's $83 million prediction? My guess would be no, as I think $70 million looks to be the ceiling, but who knows what'll happen once those 2D dollars are "converted" into 3D coin.
I'll be sure to post Friday estimates as soon as I can so we can get a better idea of how this weekend will shape out.

Go Miley!
Star Trek had a similar start and went to gross 76.7 mil for the weekend
I like why my hometown critic from the KC Star said about Titans 3D…
The 3-D feels phony. Instead of creating a natural environment (as was the case with “Avatar”), the elements in each frame are lined up in distinctive planes. The jarring results resemble a child’s pop-up book.
The 3-D can be off-putting: When Ralph Fiennes’ Hades stares into the camera, his face seems to be floating several inches in front of his mane of hair.
Bottom line: “Titans” is the rare instance in which the film is not only just as good in plain old 2-D, it’s actually better.
I think Clash of the Titans has the potential to become a major hit. Their advertising campaign was very strong and many loved the trailer. The only thing that really could hurt it is the lack of good reviews for it. But most audiences don't care about quality anymore. I predict Clash of the Titans will make $75M over the weekend.
P.S.-With such a strong push for the 3-D, you would think most theaters would be playing it in 3-D. There are two theaters playing it near me. Neither are showing it in 3-D. Weird.
Most movies should consider 2-D if they didn't shoot it in 3-D. Lesson learned.
Swung by my local theater to gauge Last Song attendance, and saw something unusual. Responsible parenting. No Hannah Montana fans at the box office for friday 2:30 matinee. Almost all were high school students around Miley's age (17).
