TIFF First Looks: Psychological Thriller 'Love Crime' and McGregor and Plummer in 'Beginners'

COMMENTS

A pair of exciting entries

Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor in Beginners

It's hard to believe in less than a month I'll be making my trip to cover the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) for the first time. For some reason it seemed like the lead time I had for Cannes was much longer, but I guess when you're busy time simply flies. Today I have two more previews from films showing at the festival and they look to be a couple of films we may want to keep our eyes on.

First off, the pic above is one of three images I've added to the site for the Toronto International Film Festival entry Beginners starring Christopher Plummer, Ewan McGregor, Goran Visnjic and Melanie Laurent.

The story centers on the relationship between Oliver (McGregor) and his 71-year-old father (Plummer) who's just come out of the closet on top of telling him he has terminal cancer. Upon hearing the news Oliver begins exploring the honesty of his own relationships, which I can only assume primarily focuses on his relationship with Melanie Laurent's character whom I'm not sure if she is playing his girlfriend or wife. Visnjic will be playing Plummer's younger lover.

The film is directed by Mike Mills, whose work I'm pretty much unfamiliar with outside of his 2005 feature Thumbsucker, which was decent, but certainly didn't floor me.

You can check out all three images from Beginners in the RopeofSilicon gallery right here.

Ludivine Sagnier and Kristin Scott-Thomas in Love Crime

Next is Alain Corneau's psychological thriller Love Crime (Crime d'Amour), which is described as Dangerous Liaisons meets Working Girl as a humiliated woman plans to take revenge on her superior in the offices of a powerful multinational corporation.

The film stars Kristin Scott-Thomas and Ludivine Sagnier and is co-written by Corneau and Nathalie Carter. The story centers on Isabelle (Sagnier) who works under Christine (Scott Thomas), who exploits her position and steals Isabelle's ideas, turning them to her own advantage. Humiliated and almost crushed, Isabelle prepares to take murderous revenge.

I am not at all familiar with Corneau's work, but anything involving Kristin Scott-Thomas has got to be taken seriously.

Along with the picture above and the poster you see to the right I have added seven other pictures from the film to the RopeofSilicon gallery right here as well as added the French-language trailer directly below. Although it doesn't have subtitles it's not too hard to get an idea of just what kind of film this is and it looks awfully good.

Love Crime will be released in French cinemas on August 18, but has yet to be picked up by a US distributor.

Kristin Scott-Thomas ALWAYS equals quality, even in a movie like the excellent Ne le Dis à Personne (Tell No One) where she was given little to do...Not to mention how awesome she was in I've Loved You So Long..

With the exception of Confessions of a Shopaholic which was pretty awful...
