TIFF 2011 First Look: 'The Hunter' Starring Willem Dafoe

COMMENTS

Dafoe is a mercenary searching for the last Tasmanian Tiger

Willem Dafoe in The Hunter

There aren't a ton of new trailers to include with these Toronto previews so whenever I can, I will, and today we have one such example as I have an international teaser trailer for The Hunter starring Willem Dafoe as Martin, a mercenary sent from Europe by an anonymous biotech company to the Tasmanian wilderness on a dramatic hunt for the last Tasmanian Tiger. The film is based on the novel by Julia Leigh -- who just so happened to direct the upcoming release Sleeping Beauty (my Cannes review here) -- and I've included a lengthier synopsis below the second image and trailer at the end of this post.

The film co-stars Frances O'Connor (A.I.: Artificial Intelligence) and Sam Neill (Daybreakers) and is directed by Australian helmer Daniel Nettheim and comes from the producers of Animal Kingdom. Entertainment One will be releasing it in Australia on October 6, and it looks like a film I may want to make a point of seeing while at the Toronto Film Festival... what do you think?

Willem Dafoe in The Hunter

Based on the acclaimed novel by Julia Leigh, The Hunter is a powerful psychological drama that tells the story of Martin (Willem Dafoe), a mercenary sent from Europe by an anonymous biotech company to the Tasmanian wilderness on a dramatic hunt for the last Tasmanian Tiger. Against his wishes, Martin's only option is to stay at a base camp house with the despondent wife and spirited children of a missing zoologist. Drawn deeper into the wild landscape in his search for the mysterious Tiger, Martin's unexpected connection to the family and the majestic wilderness around him, forces him to confront the reality of his work and personal morality, with dramatic consequences.

  1. Badge says:

They started a DNA recombination/cloning program, which has been on and off for the last 10 years, to resuscitate the extinct Tasmanian Tiger (actually a marsupial), so maybe Dafoe could have just stayed home.

Heard Defoe was filming a movie out here, didnt know what it was about until now. Sounds interesting.
