Hero and villain rumors surface

Earlier today LatinoReview posted a news piece saying Stellan Skarsgard's son Alexander looks like he may be Thor director Kenneth Branagh's first choice to play the title role. Word is Alex was seeing having dinner with Branagh and it was also confirmed the two share the same agency.

IESB.net is now coming to the table saying they too have heard similar rumblings but have also heard Channing Tatum's name as part of the discussion even though Branagh appears to be leaning more towards Skarsgard.

Those unfamiliar with Skarsgard don't worry too much, you aren't that out of the loop as he is just starting to make a bigger splash on the scene following his work in "Generation Kill" in 2008 as well as playing top dog vampire Eric Northman in HBO's "True Blood".

The other news bit IESB delivers is a rumor Josh Hartnett is up for the role of the villain Loki, Thor's adopted brother and principal foe. The report goes on to say "Josh and his camp are really interested because he has never played a villain before and after Heath Ledger's Oscar win for the latest comic book villain, Hartnett is intrigued by the character."

I have no idea what happens in the Thor comics so I can't offer much more than what I have already given, but that's the word around the campfire kiddies.

Thor is currently slated for a July 16, 2010 release by Paramount Pictures.

I dont know why, but I think Thor wont translate well as a movie.

i do NOT see Taum or Hartnett playing this role well at all! now, Skarsgard i can see playing this role magnificently! hopefully they make the right choice

I may be in the minority, but I think Josh Holloway would make a good Thor. The country accent is for LOST, he doesn't really need a Asgardian one…Alexander Skarsgard is not a bad choice at all, but Josh has something intangible. He is likable and ruffian at the same time. I heard Marvel wanted to keep the whole movie in Asgard and then put him in our world at the end. 13th Warrior anyone? Blockbusters are made two ways…the geeks and the ladies. Ladies will shell out money to see a movie they connect with multiple times. Don't think they will wanna see any hot dude surrounded by mud huts and horns for two hours if there ain't no hobbits in it…heh. I think if they start in the emergency room of a lousy NY hospital and see Donald Blake first…road weary, trying to save the life of a girl horribly injured. She slips into a coma. In her non descipt room, Dr. Blake sits in a chair watching her shallow breathing. The rain splatters the window, the heart monitor beeps, lightning strikes and he begins to tell her the story of how he came to earth and why. Then you can go to Asgard for the backstory while cross cutting into present day. The third act I see as a giant set piece akin to Cloverfield. An Asgardian creature has been set loose in NYC by his brother Loki and only Thor can bring it down. The same creature who put a nameless girl in a coma in a lousy hospital room… In the end, the Quinn Jet lands and Tony Stark introduces himself to his friends…

If it's Alexander he needs to beef up. Marvel's Thor is very muscular.
With the picture above I first guessed him as Loki actually, darken the hair and he's perfect.
The Thor back story could be quite powerfull if translated well onto the screen. The sending to earth as a lesson of humility. Emerging as a hero in the end.
Hmm, sounds a bit like Iron Man actually but that's just the way it is.

  5. I feel that WWE wrestler Triple H ould pull off Thor quite well if given a lil acting guidance.

@Krazy Karl: I see why they call you "crazy."

I think Alex is a fine choice for Thor – but I'm not so sure about this comic-to-film translation.

However, I am happy about Hartnett as the villian. I thought he gave off a cool, yet deadly charm in Sin City.
