Machete, The American or Going the Distance... Hard to go wrong this week

The American
'The American' Movie Poster
The American has drawn a split among critics and I bet there will be few that enjoyed it as much as I did, but that's why we like movies right? Where some people will get confused is if they go in looking for something like a Jason Bourne style thriller, this is not that kind of assassin movie and in all honesty such comparisons shouldn't even be made as they will only confuse an audience that goes to see this one.

However, I won't urge you to see this one, but if you are on the fence take what I've said into consideration, watch the trailer below and read my review and a couple of the comments there from people that already saw the movie. It should get you all sorted out.

This film is rated R for violence, sexual content and nudity.
Machete

It's bloody and it's fun. I don't think I need to say anything more than that because if you are interested in checking out Machete you damn well better already have a ticket. If you need anything more from me just read my review.

This film is rated R for strong bloody violence throughout, language, some sexual content and nudity.

I liked this film quite a bit and it surprises me to see other critics coming down so hard on it. Oh well, we don't watch movies for other people we watch them for ourselves and despite what the majority of critics are saying I suggest you check this film out. While I admit it has its flaws in my review, none of those flaws take away from one of the few romantic comedies with an honest approach to relationships.

This film is rated R for sexual content including dialogue, language throughout, some drug use and brief nudity.
The Winning Season

This film looks like it belongs on ABC Family or the Disney Channel. What is going on here and who is going to go see this?

This film is rated PG-13 for some thematic elements, language including some sexual references, alcohol abuse and smoking.
A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop

Opening up in five theaters today, Zhang Yimou's remake of the 1985 directorial debut of Joel and Ethan Coen, Blood Simple, is one I unfortunately missed. So all I can tell you is to watch the trailer and decide for yoursel fon this one. And if you are interested in searching it out you can click here for a look at the release dates and when it's coming to your town.

This film is rated R for some violence.
Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1

As much as I urged folks to go see Mesrine: Killer Instinct I wouldn't do the same with this one though it isn't a bad film. One commenter called the first part "a bit segmented" in last week's post and I didn't necessarily get that impression, at least not to the point it hurt the film. However, Public Enemy No. 1 seems to just come out of nowhere and bounces around without concern.

Most importantly, what I think I learned is that when it comes to gangster tales it's always more interesting to watch them rise than it is to watch them fall. Perhaps that's why I love A Prophet so much.

This film is rated R for bloody brutal violence, a scene of sexuality, nudity and pervasive language.

    • The second part is a bit less focused and more anecdotal. It's not as great as Killer Instinct, but how could it be? Still, it's a fitting conclusion to a fantastic gangster saga and Cassel continues to amaze.

I'd give the Killer Instinct an A, with Public Enemy #1 being something like an A-.

      Hope that helps.
